224 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Nelson Mandela revealed nothing about his personal religious beliefs in his writings or in his public pronouncements. He purposely avoided discussing them in his autobiography for political reasons, but those who were closest to him knew he held Christian views. At Mandela's request, the final components of his funeral followed the Methodist service. 'The Spiritual Mandela' explores the ways in which Nelson Mandela balanced Christianity with traditional African beliefs and with his political views, and how he reconciled his faith with the fact that religion had often been used as a tool to oppress his people. (The author) traces the spiritual aspects of Mandela's life from his youth in a Thembu village, to his education at Wesleyan and Methodist mission schools, to his time as an activist, his incarceration on Robben Island, and the years thereafter." Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to r e i n f o r c e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures a nd a d ec li ni ng b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century wit h i ts edu cat ion al imp lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832., Fido, Martin.

Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most effic i e n t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and w il li ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'sub jec ts' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Wald ie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crim e gen re." THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO., Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by.
79 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1962 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
368 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. "(T)ells the history of the town of York (Toronto) from the arrival of John Graves Simcoe in 1793 through the War of 1812 until news of the peace reached its citizens in the spring of 1815. The selection of contemporary documents attempts to show why York was chosen for a settlement in the first place, the kind of community that developed, and the effect of the War on that community. Apart from the normal problems connected with the establishment of any settlement, the officials of the town of York were faced with the necessity of creating a worthy capital city for Upper Canada at a time when Kingston, because of its pre-eminence as the military and naval centre of the province and its commercial prosperity, overhadowed all other settlements. The book also illustrates the gradual integration into a corporate body of many diverse elements - senior government officials, discharged soldiers, tradesmen, labourers - so that by 1815 the characteristics of modern Toronto were beginning to be evident in York. This collection of documents and the editor's very full Introduction will provide the student of local history with much primary material and the general reader with an interesting account of the early years of the modern metropolis of Toronto. Minor wear at corners, 50% of text block edges are lightly browned. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has one or two tiny edge chips and tears, light edge creases at top of rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing.
