WYCLIFFE AND THE PEA-GREEN BOAT., Burley, W.J.
61 Burley, W.J. WYCLIFFE AND THE PEA-GREEN BOAT.
London Victor Gollancz 1975 0575019689 / 9780575019683 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "When Cedric Tremain is charged with murder-ing his father, by booby-trapping his fishing boat, all the locals agree that this wouldn't be his sort of crime. But the case against him is strong: he has the motive, the opportunity, the know-how; and there's some hard circumstantial evidence against him. So he is arrested. But there are things about the case which Chief Superintendent Wycliffe doesn't like. So he keeps nosing around. And his investigations lead him into the details of another murder case, one that is now twenty years old. Is it possible that there is some relationship between the two cases, and if so what? As Wycliffe, that most unorthodox of detectives, probes into the present and the past, our own suspicions and assumptions are being constantly challenged." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, four page leaves are slightly roughly opened at top edge - page leaf 85/86 has a few very small and tiny edge tears and tiny chips in top margin only. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has minor wrinkling at top edge of rear flap, minor tanning on inside of flaps.

WYCLIFFE AND THE SCHOOLGIRLS., Burley, W.J.
62 Burley, W.J. WYCLIFFE AND THE SCHOOLGIRLS.
London Victor Gollancz 1976 0575020482 / 9780575020481 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
191 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "Debbie Joyce, a young cabaret singer, is found strangled. A week later, in the same city, Elaine Bennett, a nurse, is similarly murdered. Immediately the press raise the alarm that a psychopathic killer is on the loose. But Chief Superintendent Wycliffe is not convinced that this is the answer. While police precautions are greatly increased, he quietly goes his own way, probing into the possibility, however remote, that there is some logical connection - logical at least to the murderer - between the two deaths. His absorbing investigation takes him into the past of the dead women, and finally to a 'community holiday' which a group of schoolgirls spent together. And nasty little beasts some of them were, playing a cruel trick on the teacher in charge and on one of the other girls. Can this remote escapade have triggered murder in the present? And if so, why and how? And are there other murders to come? Wycliffe learns a lot about the strangeness of human nature during his exploration of the world of the schoolgirls, and the narrative builds up to a tense climax." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, two very tiny edge tears at top corner of page leaf 37/38. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some minor edge wrinkling, minor tanning on inside of flaps and at top inside edge.

MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE., Buruma, Ian. Signed.
63 Buruma, Ian. Signed. MURDER IN AMSTERDAM. THE DEATH OF THEO VAN GOGH AND THE LIMITS OF TOLERANCE.
Penguin, New York, 2006, first edition (remainder mark).
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. ISBN 1594201080 "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroc can immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mo h ammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a co un try that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance f inds its limits." Small remainder mark on bottom of text block, light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wear/wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good+

"(T)o most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth. The northern wilderness is barren only to those lacking in perception and imagination. But if we should let the great herds vanish from the barren-lands, they will indeed become what the name implies, and we will have lost a part of the majesty and mystery of life." 284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." 75 Chapman, Eddie. Foreword by Frank Owen. THE REAL EDDIE CHAPMAN STORY.
London Tandem Mass Market Paperback Good
253 pp, 7 1/8" H. c1966. In 1940, safecracker Eddie Chapman offered his services to the German High Command as a spy. His first mission was to blow up the de Havilland works in Hatfield. "What is now revealed for the first time is that Chapman had immediately upon landing made contact with senior officials of the Air Ministry who listened with stunned silence to his story. Shortly after, a German reconnaissance plane which was allowed over to photograph the results of his mssion, reported that the buildings were in ruins and smoke was still rising. At Hatfield, the camouflage experts quietly congratulated themselves on having made it look as though an explosives expert had been at work! Chapman was working for his own country at the risk of his life. Soon after he was shipped back to Germany through Lisbon, where Hitler, grateful for the blow struck against England, awarded him the Iron Cross. For two years, Chapman, behaving like a hero of the Third Reich, spied on the Germans and constantly fed information back to British Intelligence, before being parachuted in for a second time to report on the range of the V-bombs. His true story makes incredible reading." Rear cover advertises the movie "Triple Cross", starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie Chapman and Yul Brynner as Colonel von Grunen. CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
76 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Hamish Hamilton, London, (1979), Ist edition.
258 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" h), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "...vividly brings the year's events to life, recounting not merely the major episodes but spotlighting little-known characters caught up in them. There is the heroic Norwegian, Theodor Broch, mayor of Narvik; Rene de Chambrun, a young French infantry officer serving in the Maginot Line who finds himself dispatched to the White House to plead his country's cause after the Fall of France; Polly Peabody, a young New York socialite who organised a field hospital, brought it to Europe and found herself flung from Scandianvia to Vichy, from occupied Paris to the London blitz. Through the eyes of young Captain Molders of the Luftwaffe we see the Germans' incredulity when Hitler's decision not to invade England may well have lost him the whole war..." Small shallow bump to top edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, dust staining to top of textblock, tiny bump to bottom rear corner. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color. VG-/VG-
