62 David, Jennifer, ed. Foreword by Hon. William G. Davis. WIND, WATER, ROCK AND SKY: THE STORY OF COGNASHENE, GEORGIAN BAY.
Toronto Cognashene Book Corporation 1997 0968189504 / 9780968189504 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good-
191 pp, oblong (9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" D). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." 63 Davis, Richard C., editor. (Sir John Franklin.) SIR JOHN FRANKLIN'S JOURNALS AND CORRESPONDENCE: THE FIRST ARCTIC LAND EXPEDITION, 1819-1822.
Toronto Champlain Society 1995 0969342543 / 9780969342540 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine

B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

The Seventies was also a decade of protests, strikes and other forms of industrial unrest, culminating in the 'Winter of Discontent' in 1978-9. "This is (the story of 'The People Beyond'), occasionally poignant, often shocking, but always heroic, from the opening scene of birth in an isolated iglu lit only by a flickering blubber lamp to the final disaster wrought by an epidemic that rages through a whole encampment. Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives. He shared their quarters in iglu and tent, travelled with them on land and sea in the long winter and short summer, and took his full share in the skilled and unremitting labour of the hunt. Out of this experience comes an account of Eskimo life that will hold every reader fascinated." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE., Dillon, Richard.
72 Dillon, Richard. WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE.
McGraw-Hill, New York, 1978.
231 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070169870 Map. "Perry fought perhaps the most perfect single battle in American naval history. More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." 111 pp, 8 7/8" H. B&w drawings. "Howard Dundas casts an irreverent eye on many of the sacred cows of yesteryear. With humorous insights, he lays bare many of the underlying assumptions so dear to our forefathers. He touches on many issues which are still current in the West: colonial attitudes, male chauvinism, the French fact in Manitoba, the revolution in social and sexual mores. Mentioned in passing are the deals past governments made with the CPR and the HBC, to say nothing of the exploitation of Westerners for Eastern interests. Whether Dundas stretches the truth or not, what matters is that he expresses the feelings of the average intelligent Winnipeg citizen growing up and learning in the most lively and witty of Canadian cities." IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC., Dunmore, Spencer.
78 Dunmore, Spencer. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC.
McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." 79 Dunn, Laurence. MERCHANT SHIPS OF THE WORLD 1910-1929 IN COLOR.
New York Macmillan 1975 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Laurence Dunn.
215 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). "The period covered by (this) volume was one of spectacular development and dramatic contrast. The First World War brought to an end a period of intense competition - competition reflected in a rapid increase in the size of individual liners. Later, during the twenties, a more restrained style emerged, less lavishly appointed and more suited to a less-affluent world. The styles of these two eras, separated by the anonymous, camouflage-conscious years of the war, were quite distinct, the post-war years bringing in a range of new shapes and profiles in funnels and sterns." "A special feature is the 80 pages of color plates by the author, which supply a unique coverage of details such as liveries, funnel marks, and houseflags." Light waviness to edges of text block, light browning to edges of text pages. Dust jacket has light browning at edges, some very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few tiny dints on panels, two tiny perforations on front flap-fold, several small light liquid marks on bottom inside edge of front panel.

WHEN THE WHALERS WERE UP NORTH: INUIT MEMORIES FROM THE EASTERN ARCTIC., Eber, Dorothy Harley.
80 Eber, Dorothy Harley. WHEN THE WHALERS WERE UP NORTH: INUIT MEMORIES FROM THE EASTERN ARCTIC.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1989 0773507027 / 9780773507029 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whaling vessels from Britain and America plied their trade in great numbers in the waters off the Eastern Arctic of North America. The heyday of whaling has, until now, been documented solely from the perspective of the whalers, never from the viewpoint of the Inuit, whose lives were touched - and sometimes destroyed - by their presence. Here, finally, is a rich view from the perspective of the Inuit, who welcomed the whalers and served on their crews. The author tells a story drawn from oral memories, a story which will soon disappear with the last Inuit generation to have seen the whalers. Illuminated by a remarkable collection of drawings, photographs, and illustrations, many in full colour, tales are told of when the whalers first appeared on the north-east coast of Baffin Island, how they set upland stations in the whale-rich waters of Cumberland Sound, and how they eventually pushed on into Hudson Bay. During this time the Inuit not only fed and clothed the whalers, they hunted with them, adding to the whalers' wealth. Our understanding of change in Inuit life is often linked to the fur traders, who arrived in the North fifty years after the arrival of the whalers. In truth it is the Inuit's close contact with the foreign world of the whalers which maked the beginning of a change in previously undisturbed Inuit culture and tradition." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.
