61 Khachaturian, Shahen. (Minas Avetisian.) MINAS AVETISIAN.
AAA Publishing House, [Montreal, Canada], (1996), Ist edition.
208 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "150 colour plates representing Minas's easel paintings, stage designs and frescoes. In addition there are also 30 reproductions of his drawings and 20 archival photographs." "...an artist of enormous talent, who tragically died young and at the peak of his creative career. The standard bearer of art in the 1960's, (Armenian artist) Minas Avetisian represented freedom and boldness rarely found among those whose careers coincided with the Soviet era. He asserted artistic freedom, and it can be said he died early because of his defiance...Apart from the detailed introduction, the book also contains some of Minas's own pronouncements on art, as well as the reminiscences of eminent personalities in the cultural and artistic fields: D. Likhachev, Ch. Aimatov, Carzou, W. Saroyan, V. Razdol-skaya, H. Hagopian, et al." Light waviness to top/bottom of textblock. 255 pp, 4to (12 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Color and b&w photographs, reproductions. ISBN 9768097302 "The identities of serious women artists have too often been omitted from historical accounts and their achievements have been misunderstood or undervalued. By comparison, their male counterparts have invariably been accorded most attention and given the status of innovators. (This book) is the first comprehensive study of the subject, and makes a significant contribution towards redressing the balance. In tracing the lives and careers of over eighty of these women, it shows that New Zealand women painters, sculptors and other art makers have achieved vital and significant imagery. In doing so, it brings fresh insights to the development of the visual arts in Aotearoa." Corner crease at bottom of page 143/144, light edge wear, slight waviness to edges of textblock. HARLEQUIN ON THE MOON: COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE AND THE VISUAL ARTS., Lawner, Lynne.
67 Lawner, Lynne. HARLEQUIN ON THE MOON: COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE AND THE VISUAL ARTS.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1998.
208 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810911949 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "Commedia dell'arte is the first modern theater - inspiration to Shakespeare, Moliere, Goldoni, Mozart, and Balanchine and forerunner of the modern stage comedy. Since its invention as a popular entertainment in Renaissance Italy, commedia, with its stock characters, its absurd and witty plots, and its utterly charming personalities, has captivated audiences high and low, from the street fairs where Punch and Judy reigned to the exquisitely refined court of the Sun King. This book traces the history of commedia from its beginnings through many transformations to its rediscovery in the experimental theater of today. The depictions of commedia in the visual arts has a rich history. From Tiepolo and Watteau to Beardsley, Picasso, Hockney, and other modern masters, painters have found great resonance and meaning in the clowns and lovers of commedia. Here the visual and dramatic arts meet, giving birth to styles of art and performance at once clever, hilarious, poignant, tragic, and eternal. Lynne Lawner traces all these threads, unearthing rare texts of commedia plays, discovering myriad version of the ever-fascinating Harlequin, Pierrot, Columbine, and Pulcinella, relating the gossip of courts and theaters, and revealing the ways in which these figures and their classic stories - the sly servant, the foolish soldier, the clever maid, the quack doctor - have arisen again and again in art." 98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." PAUL MANSHIP., Manship, John.
71 Manship, John. PAUL MANSHIP.
Abbeville, New York, 1989, first edition.
216 pp, folio (13 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1558590021 Beautifully illustrated in color and b&w. "From his sexy little bronze nymphs to his soaring golden 'Prometheus' at Rockefeller Center, the sculptures of Paul Manship have begu iled the public through much of this century. This dazzling monograph - as elegantly sophisticated as the artist's own oeuvre - celebrates the life's work of America's master of Art Deco.....As close to a jet setter as one could be in an e r a o f o c e an travel, Manship spent much of the early 1920s in Paris, where he was one of two American sculptors to have work included in the famous 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes' (the show that gave us th e t er m A rt D ec o). His worldwide reputation flourished in the 1930s with monumental commissions for the Bronx Zoo, Rockefeller Center, the New York World's Fair, and a multitude of other. The age of Abstract Expressionism eventually threw Man sh ip in to e cli pse , b ut the rediscovery of Art Deco illuminated the charms of his work once again, and his sculptures are again highly admired and passionately collected. This lively biography, affectionately written by Manship's son, pr ovid es muc h ne w i nfo rmat ion abou t the artist's long and productive career. The full range of that career is made vividly clear in the striking illustrations, many never before published. Because Manship was meticulous about documenting his work, th e bo ok in clud es r are s tudi es an d plasters that no longer exist, a revelatory sampling of little-known early and late works, and pristine original views of works that have since suffered the effects of time and weather. The result i s an e ngag ing, enligh tenin g boo k that deft ly cap tures the spirit of an artist wholeheartedly devoted to the pursuit of beauty." Slight waviness to top/bottom of textblock.
