THE DECLINE OF THE CASTLE., Thompson, M.W. (Michael)
61 Thompson, M.W. (Michael) THE DECLINE OF THE CASTLE.
Harveys (Magna), Wigston, 1994, reprint.
211 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1854226088 "Extensively illustrated with photographs, plans and period engravings, (this) book examines the decline of the castle as both fortification and seigneurial residence over th e two and a half centuries that preceded the Civil War. In general, this was a period in which function played less and less part and display - even fantasy - ever more in the minds of castle builders. Although few new castles were built in E n g l a n d after 1400, the growing power of artillery and continuing warfare in Scotland and across the Channel in France continued to provide stimuli to fresh architectural development. Dr. Thompson relates alterations in design to contemporar y s oc ia l ch an ges and devotes particular attention to the rapid decline of Tudor times and to the massive destruction wrought by Parliamentary forces during the Civil War and Commonwealth. A concluding chapter examines the enticing quality the i mag e o f t he ca stl e has continued to hold over the intervening three centuries and examines some remarkable latterday examples of the genre, among them Burges' Castell Coch in Glamorgan and, in this century, Lutyens' Castle Drogo." 62 Thompson, Peter E., translated & edited by. Jean Le Bel, Jean Froissart, Enguerrand De Monstrelet. CONTEMPORARY CHRONICLES OF THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR. FROM THE WORKS OF JEAN LE BEL, JEAN FROISSART & ENGUERRAND DE MONSTRELET.
London Folio Society 1966 Hard Cover Good
358 pp, 9 7/8" H. Dark blue leather spine with gold lettering/decoration, paper-covered boards with simulated wood grain pattern. Decorated endpapers, colour plates (including frontispiece), b&w maps/battle plans, fold-out genealogical table at rear (before index). Blue/gray slipcase. "The span of history covered by the Hundred Years War is one of constant interest for the social as well as the military and political historian. In this volume the story of the war is told by means of passages translated from three French chroniclers who between them cover its whole duration; they are chroniclers rather than historians, yet where questions of social or political interest seem to be passed over the answers can sometimes be gleaned from the text. The extracts here given contain about one-fifteenth part of the original chronicles, and are linked by a connecting narrative which deals also with political issues." Previous owner's bookplate on verso of free front endpaper, minor browning to inside hinges, very light wear on bottom edges of boards, light fading to spine color, rubbing on spine. Slipcase has light general rubbing, wear/small pieces of paper missing at one top side edge and top rear edge.

A DICTIONARY OF CHIVALRY., Uden, Grant.
64 Uden, Grant. A DICTIONARY OF CHIVALRY.
London Longmans 1968 582153719 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Pauline Baynes.
352 pp, 9 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "The making of this Dictionary arose from the author's wish to give, in an accurate yet exciting work of reference, a picture of the Knight and the things that occupied his life and thought - his education and training; his armour, weapons and equipment; the stories he heard and read; the captains he followed and the men he led; the complex code he was sworn to; the enterprises in which he was engaged; and the cathedrals, abbeys and churches where memorials of chivalry survive. The book does not seek to hide the dirt, cruelty and intolerance behind the elaborate courtesies, the pageantry and the heroism. There are well over 1,000 entries (with plentiful cross-references), ranging from short definitions to several paragraphs, and there are many extracts from literature and early chronicles. There is also a brief classified index at the end. The illustrations in full colour and in b&w were drawn by Pauline Baynes page by page, to keep text and pictures side by side. This remarkable illustrator has captured all the changing moods of the entries, in splendid pictures ranging from gay interpretations of the fancies of mediaeval storytellers to accurate and detailed drawings of armour, weapons, etc., from contemporary sources." Very tiny stain on half-title page, tiny foxing marks and very light browning on top of text block, wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor faint color loss on spine and boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, light browning at top edge, minor rubbing.

300 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w drawings, map endpapers. "(T)he story of the British soldier in the age of fighting as a profession, from Anglo-Saxon times to the French Revolution. It is not the history of campaigns and regiments but of the men who went to war: their story told in their own words. (A)n enthralling collection of original narratives written by men like the poet at the Battle of Maldon in 991, the chroniclers of the Crusades, the splendid Corporal Todd - and by Kit Ross, surely the most remarkable woman ever to have worn the King's Coat. The story these people tell is a harsh one: marching, deserting, punishment, hunger, looting and just enduring the squalor and danger of campaigning. There are, though, glorious moments, when the horrors of war are redeemed by fortitude and self-sacrifice, and by what has been the chief mark of the 'Tommy' for a thousand years: a wry and tough sense of humour." University of California Press, Berkeley, 1996.
477 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0520204964 "This book is an excellent, up-to-date reassessment of the Byzantine empire during a crucial phase in the history of the Near East. Well illustrated with original maps, it covers the last decade of the Roman empire as a superpower of the ancient world, the crisis of the seventh century, and the means whereby its embattled Byzantine successor hung on in Constantinople and Asia Minor until the Abbasid Caliphate's decline opene d up new perspectives for Christian power in the Near East. Chapters cover social and economic change, iconoclasm, the institutions of the Byzantine state, the military development that allowed the empire to strike back in the tenth century, the gr owing political tensions that led to civil war in the 970s and 980s, and the halt to further advance by that war's victor, Basil II. The author gives full attention to the empire's neighbors, allies, and enemies. The origins of Russia, relations w ith the nomad power of the steppe world, the competition between Bulgars, Romans and Slavs in the Balkans, and the rich but frequently ignored world of the Transcaucasus are all given extended treatment." WHERE TROY ONCE STOOD., Wilkens, Iman.
69 Wilkens, Iman. WHERE TROY ONCE STOOD.
St. Martin's, New York, 1991, first U.S. edition.
365 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0312059949 Map endpapers, b&w maps, plans, drawings, reproductions. "Arguing, convincingly, that the 'Iliad' and the 'Odyssey' do not fit the topography, geology, climate, and oceanic tidal patterns of the eastern Mediterranean, Wilkens relocates the Homeric scene in western Europe and the northern Atlantic, revealing the precise site of Troy itself and the plain on which the Trojan War was fought. By examining the texts in det ail, Wilkens has identified over 400 place-names in western Europe and concludes that the original oral version was composed by Homer several hundred years before it was written down. He reveals that the Trojan War was fought on a far larger scale than previously thought, by Celts from regions as far apart as Scandinavia and Spain, and that the 'Odyssey' provided an oral map for illiterate Celtic seafarers - an extraordinary and enlightening journey into prehistory that is as exciting as the voyages of Odysseus. Thanks to Wilkens' patient detective work, many of the most puzzling aspects of Homer's epic poems now fall into place, enabling the reader - perhaps for the first time - to understand fully the meaning and significance of Euro pe's oldest literary masterpieces.' Very light dust soiling on top of textblock, minor soiling on bottom of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear at corners and at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge w ear, very light edge wrinkling, light creasing at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds and at bottom of front flap, light rubbing to glossy surfaces, very small faint scuff on rear panel. THE PERSIAN EXPEDITION., Xenophon. Translated by Rex Warner.
70 Xenophon. Translated by Rex Warner. THE PERSIAN EXPEDITION.
Penguin, Baltimore, Maryland, 1965, book club edition.
309 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map. "One of history's most remarkable military achievements - the march of the Ten Thousand Greeks - is detailed in this highly readable first-hand account by a dynamic leader. Cool, calculating and brilliant, Xenophon emerges as a fascinating military figure. In (this book) he reveals the character, training and strategy that made the Greek soldier so efficient. In the fourth century B.C. Cyrus the Younger, pretender to the Persian thron e, launched a fierce campaign against his brother the king. With the help of Greek troops, whom he recognized as the best infantrymen in the world, Cyrus believed he could surprise and defeat his brother's vastly superior force and seize the throne . Unfortunately Cyrus' own troops were not as effective as his Greek recruits, and the force as a whole was weak in cavalry. The campaign collapsed, Cyrus himself was killed and the Greeks were stranded in Persia. Surrounded by a hostile and bitt er foe, Xenophon and his fellow leaders faced the incredible task of leading ten thousand men back from Babylon to the Black Sea. The success of the five-month march - one of the most famous in history - was a triumph of discipline and improvisatio n in the face of overwhelming odds. For Xenophon not only managed to lead his men out of Persia but succeeded in keeping the army intact as a fighting force. (This) is both an absorbing tale of adventure and military skill and an unusual story of human character. It also presents a revealing account of the day-to-day life of the common soldier unique in classical writing." Small bump at top of rear board, several tiny/very small stains on rear board, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two t iny corner bumps slight edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light wrinkling at top of front flap, several tiny edge tears - some with old tape repair, slight fading to spine color, color offs et on inside of spine/hinges from book.
