CHOCO TO A.I.F., Blackwell, John.
61 Blackwell, John. CHOCO TO A.I.F.
General Store Publishing House, Burnstown, Ontario, 1994.
171 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0919431836 "In a rarely acknowledged theatre of war, an Australian recounts his antic WWII experiences. A young member of the militia at the outbreak of war, John Blackwell played an active role in the early d ays of radar, serving as an oficer with the Australian Army, both at home and in England. Through his eyes, and keen sense of the ridiculous, we see the rise of technology in modern warfare, and the frequently humorous fallibilities of the m e n e m p l oyed to use it." THE BATTLE OF THE GENERALS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE FALAISE POCKET - THE CAMPAIGN THAT SHOULD HAVE WON WORLD WAR II., Blumenson, Martin.
62 Blumenson, Martin. THE BATTLE OF THE GENERALS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE FALAISE POCKET - THE CAMPAIGN THAT SHOULD HAVE WON WORLD WAR II.
William Morrow, New York, (1993), 1st. edition
288 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0688118372 B&w photographs, map/battle plans. "According to General Omar Bradley, it was a chance that 'comes to a commander once in a century'. The opportunity was to surround and de stroy the enemy armies opposing the Allies in Normandy. Three months after the Allies invaded France on D-Day, the Germans had stuck their head into a noose and made themselves vulnerable to encirclement and annihilation in the Falaise Pocket . H a d the Allies succeeded in springing the trap at Falaise quickly enough, they would certainly have brought World War II in Western Europe to a triumphant end. Instead, the Allies failed and unnecessarily prolonged the war for another eight m on t hs . ( The author's) new and unsparing look at Generals Eisenhower, Montgomery, and Bradley challenges the conventional treatment of those commanders and of the Normandy campaign itself." PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Blythe, Ronald, ed.
63 Blythe, Ronald, ed. PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Viking, London, 1991, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670832049 "The Second World War was, among other things, a great 'reading and writing' war. There was a passion for books of all kinds, and also a remarkable outpouring of personal w riting in the form of letters and diaries. The latter were actually forbidden in the services because they might fall into enemy hands, but this did not prevent them from being kept in startling quantities. The young especially, whether on t h e H o m e Front or fighting abroad, became extraordinary self-examiners and communicators, finding all kinds of outlets for what was happening to them in the shape of private records and correspondence. It was a time when people lived for let t er s, a n d wh en , since much of the war was spent in boredom by the average participant, reading became the perfect escape. The existence of a vast archive of Second World War personal literary expression has been well-known to historians, but i t h as not o ft en bee n used to reveal the significance of the 'reading and writing' culture of this period. Ronald Blythe has a deep understanding of those days and in this collection of letters and journals has revealed much of their heart a nd soul . Half of th e b ook is made up of the wartime writing of his friends; the other half has been drawn from the Department of Documents at the Imperial War Museum. This book is a personal statement that makes eloquent shifts from pain, desp air and de ath t o ab surd ity, lau ghter and bravery. It is a traveller's tale and a stay-at-home's tale. It is politically hopeful and romantic, and also down to earth. Read together, these confessions and descriptions from and to a Britain of nea rly h alf a cen tury ago c reate an a stonishing impact. We see a world holding itself together by language, by words, and with skill and determination. The 'tone' of those days is often quite unbearably caught, with force and eloquence. (T hey c reate) a m ultiple auto biogra phy of a uni que kind." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at top edge of rear panel. Fine/Near Fine

Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons." The autobiography of Rear Admiral Jeffry V. Brock. In volume I he "describes his experiences as a commander of escort groups in the U-boat ridden Atlantic of World War II. Woven through the high adventure of combat are encounters with colourful political and military figures, and the feisty people of Britain. In 1950, Brock was appointed to command the Canadian naval forces sent to Korea. His meetings with General MacArthur are frankly recounted and give a unique view of this larger-than-life figure, and his handling of the Korean conflict." In volume II, "Brock writes of his time on the Directing Staff of the National Defence College of Canada and of fascinating overseas tours. He recalls meeting eminent personages of his day, such as Lord Louis Mountbatten and Field Marshal Montgomery. He describes four interest-filled years in London as Naval Adviser to the High Commissioner and as Canada's naval representative in Europe. He returned to Canada in 1957, and a few years later was promoted to Rear Admiral. While serving as Vice Chief of Naval Staff in Ottawa, he sensed the distant rumblings of a new confrontation - a confrontation that spelled the end of the R.C.N. as men of Brock's era knew it. Paul Hellyer, the newly appointed Minister of Defence, was steering the federal government toward a plan for the unification of Canada's armed services. Brock, in this hard-hitting, brutally honest section of his memoirs, breaks his two-decade silence with an account of the bureaucratic engineering which culminated in his forced retirement and the dismissal of a great many loyal officers of senior rank." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spines, minor soiling on top edge of text block of vol. I, tiny dent on bottom of text block of vol. II. Dust jackets have light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, vol. II is price-clipped.
