THE GUARDS: BRITAIN'S HOUSEHOLD DIVISION. EUROPA MILITARIA No. 20., Dunstan, Simon.
61 Dunstan, Simon. THE GUARDS: BRITAIN'S HOUSEHOLD DIVISION. EUROPA MILITARIA No. 20.
Windrow & Greene, (London, 1996).
64 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Unlike the household troops of many heads of state, The Guards have combined their role as the personal bodyguard of the Sovereign with an unsurpassed fighting tradition. This tradition is the cement that binds them together within The Household Division, whose motto is Septem Juncta in Uno - Seven Joined in One. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation and although The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb at fatigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military photographer and author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine.

W.W. Norton, New York, 1990.
317 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 039330714X B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "The Gurkha regiments in the British Army are, quite simply, the finest infantrymen in the world. Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early ninetee nth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' (roughly translated as 'Here come the Gurkhas!') h a s c a u s ed enemy soldiers to flee. The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the sav ag e w ar s of p eace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victori a C ro ss , a n unm atc hed record. This book will tell who the Gurkhas are and where they come from. It will describe their manners, customs, and character, and their history as soldiers, with special attention to their unique skills and remarkab le v alo r." 154 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations, music notation for "The British Grenadiers" and "The Seventh Royal Fusiliers". "After more than 280 years of turbulent history, the Royal Fusiliers look back on a career that has taken them to nearly every country in which Englishmen have fought. The Fusilier has not always been well-treated, and not always well-liked, but his achievements - and his failures - have helped to decide the course of the British nation. Over the years, in their many campaigns, the Fusiliers developed a certain way of doing things, a certain style. They formed a tradition. And this tradition, because it grew out of the fundamentals of British character and British life, still has value for the soldiers of today." Dust jacket has light wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, light browning to edges, minor rubbing, old price label on front flap.

London Leo Cooper 1970 0850520312 / 9780850520316 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "Since their formation in 1694 as Farrington's Regiment the Worcestershire Regiment (bearing the numbers 29 and 36) has achieved almost unique status, being one of the only four British regiments to have an English motto and one of the only two to bear the elongated garter star as a badge as well as having a naval crown above it. This last distinction was awarded to them for the part they played whilst serving as Marines in the British fleet at the action known as 'the Glorious First of June'. Subsequently they distinguished themselves in the Peninsular War and the Sikh Wars, and they are remembered in more recent times for their superb action at Gheluvelt in 1914 when by closing the gap in the British line they saved Ypres and halted the German advance to the Channel ports. Later they fought doggedly at Neuve Chappelle and in all gained nine V.C.s during the Great Wa r. In the 1939-1945 War they raised twelve battalions and fought, as their nickname 'Guards of the Line' suggests, with great gallantry and steadiness all over the world. Gazala-Point 187, Normandy, Kohima and Mandalay are but a few of the names familiar to the Worcesters. Now the Regiment is to be amalgamated with the Sherwood Foresters. On the cap-badge of the new Regiment the motto 'Firm' stands out, permanently signifying the intention to continue the traditions of loyalty and service. General Gale, one of the Regiment's most distinguished sons, has here written a colourful account of the history of one of our great County Regiments." Includes a chapter on 'Traditions and Customs' and the music for 'Royal Windsor'. Previous owner's small stamp on front endpapers, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light fading to spine and at top/bottom edges of boards, tiny bump at top edge of front board, very light browning to edges of textblock. Leo Cooper, London, (1988), Ist edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "...covers the Regiment in action in Palestine, India, Malaya, Trieste and Cyprus, as well as when soldiering in Egypt, Greece, BAOR and at home. A complete chapter is devoted to the activities of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial battalions...Each chapter describes a tour of duty of one battalion in a particular posting and is divided into two parts: the first paints a general picture of the role of the battalion showing why it was there and what it was like to be there with some mention of events of note. The second part of the chapter contains a detailed chonological account of the experiences of the battalion...In Malaya the Regiment won for itself between 1949 and 1953 a reputation unequalled throughout the whole 12-year Emergency there by any other British battalion. While the chapter devoted to Malaya provides the core of the book the other chapters reveal a continous thread of devotion to duty and the author is not exaggerating when he speaks in his preface of 'a quiet, grim determination in the face of extremely hostile conditions' to do a worthwhile job as being characteristic of the Suffolk Regiment until the very end." Leo Cooper, London, 1970, first edition.
122 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520363 B&w photographs, reproductions. "In (this volume) we have a regiment that began life as Marines at the time when the Royal Navy first penetrated into the Mediterranean; we have an other regiment, quite separate at that time from the first, taking part as the only complete unit in the otherwise best forgotten foray into the Highlands after Bonny Prince Charlie that ended disastrously at Prestonpans; and we have the crow n i n g g l ory of the defence of the Residency at Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. This in addition to participation in the American War of Independence, a reminder of which is still worn by all light infantrymen in their cap badge; the Peninsul ar W ar a n d Wa terloo and the wars in the Crimea, in Egypt and in South Africa. The story goes into two world wars and in the exploits here recorded it was west country men who, particularly in the second of them, provided the backbone of the D .C. L.I .'s ba tt al ion s. A regimental history would be a dull affair were it not for the records and diaries that past members have left behind them. The D.C.L.I. is particularly fortunate in its 'other rank' chroniclers and Privates Waterfiel d an d Me tcal fe, Cor por al R yder and Sergeant Philip are a quartet the interest and pungency of whose anecdotes it would be hard to beat...." Includes the music and lyrics for the Regimental March 'One and All' and lyrics for 'Trelawny'. Fain t cig arett e odo r, l ight wri nkli ng at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block. 93 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. A tongue-in-cheek take-off of the 'Famous Regiments' series. "The untrammelled deserts of the Army List (restricted) can offer no oasis of information; Whitehall's hallowed sanctuary can only look askance at the casual enquirer who asks: 'Who are the Queen's Malabars?' In all the dark corners of the earth, in all the torrid zones of the extremities previously defended, nay, patronised by the British Army, the 200th Foot have always distinguished themselves by their steadiness in adversity, by their utter fearlessness in the face of the foe, and by their universal joie de vivre, elan and esprit de corps. It was the 'Old 200th' who put Waterloo on the map (27 miles to the south-east of its original position), who held Barnard Castle against the attacking hordes of Bashi-Bazouks - even when the supply of Gevrey Chambertin '38 gave out, who fought the Royalists to a standstill at Chalgrove and defeated the Ironsides in one afternoon, the fighting regiment who walked around the Maginot Line even before the demolition of the Siegfried Line had been completed. With the honesty bred of such men as these one can truly say: 'There has never been a regiment like the Queen's Malabars' - and there can certainly never have been a regimental history like this." Very small bump to top corners of boards. Dust jacket is price clipped, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of flap- folds and spine, very light browning, minor soiling, corner crease on rear flap.

Leo Cooper, London, (1972), first edition.
143 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520908 B&w illustrations, march. "The Regiment (repelled many offensives) in its early life - particularly at Minorca in 1756, Salamanca, Waterloo, Inkerman, Sebastopol and Spion Kop in the South African War. It was one of the few British regiments to make the desert march across Abyssinia for the attack on Magdala, and also fought in the Zulu War. Wherever the fighting was most deadly and the odds against victory most daunting, it is safe to assume that the King's Own were there. The Regiment boasted twenty battle-honours when the Great War broke out, and in those dreadful four years of slaughter it was to add a further 59 - Le Cateau, Retreat from Mons, Marne 1 9 1 4 , A i s n e 1914, Festubert 1915, Loos, Passchendaele, Macedonia 1915-18, Suvla, Tigris 1916, Baghdad; these are just a few of them. In the Second World War the King's Own waited patiently for the ships at Dunkirk; fought in Syria, North Afr ic a an d I ta ly ; sw eated out the siege of Malta; penetrated hundreds of miles behind the Japanese lines as Chindits. All these actions, and more, are described in this vivid and action-packed story." Previous owner's small stamp on each of fro nt en dpa pe rs , t iny b ump to bottom of spine.
