62 Collard, Elizabeth. THE POTTERS' VIEW OF CANADA: CANADIAN SCENES ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY EARTHENWARE.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1983 0773504214 / 9780773504219 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
194 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, marks. "This is the first book to be devoted exclusively to potters' views of Canada. The potters' views of Canada have a many-sided appeal, linking the world of artists, printmakers, and photographers to the ceramics industry. Covering the period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this volume focuses chiefly on wares made for the dinner table or the washstand. All are earthenware, decorated by transfer printing, and produced by British potters. The scenes they depict range from the awesome falls at Niagara to early steamboats on the St Lawrence, from igloos in the Arctic to a governor's residence in New Brunswick. Elizabeth Collard traces the evolution of these wares, placing them in their historical setting and identifying the sources from which many of the views were derived. She also provides much detail on the English and Scottish potters and on the artists whose work they adapted to their own use." Very minor edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing to glossy surface.

THE TORONTO GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1819-1965: A CHRONICLE., Cosbie, W.G.
65 Cosbie, W.G. THE TORONTO GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1819-1965: A CHRONICLE.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1975 0770511848 / 9780770511845 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." By the end of the Liberal regime in 1957 the country had undergone immense growth in human and material resources. The experience of the Second World War had been followed by participation in the Korean War and ten years of the Cold War. The Great Depression had given way to a boom which had continued through the exchange crisis, serious inflation and minor recessions. In addition, new life had been generated in the arts. The new road which Canada chose to follow led directly to a new world of planning and management, of economic controls and social equalization." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Croil, James.
69 Croil, James. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Fine Very Good
381 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "(This) is an exciting study of the development of steam navigation in Canada. In tracing the transition from sailing ships to the paddle-steamer, and from the paddle-steamer to the revolutionary screw-propeller, the author writes with the kind of imaginative insight that brings back to life a past age of challenge. One of the delightful features of this book is the vivid study of shipping on the Great Lakes. Croil's account of the lake ships catches the imagination with its comprehensive study of past glories: LaSalle's schooner of ten tons, whose journey was halted by the Niagara Falls; the first lake steamer, the 'Frontenac' (1816), said to be the best example of naval architecture in North America; the 'Queen Charlotte' (1818), which carried passengers from Prescott to the stage-coach station at the head of the Bay of Quinte; the 'Gore', built at Niagara in 1838, which was one of the earliest passenger steamers on Georgian Bay; and the 'Bruce Mines', which carried copper ore on Lake Huron. The reader will be equally delighted by the large number of illustrations Croil provides. (They) present a glorious pictorial record of early shipping, showing the curious Miller Twin-Boat of 1788, C.P.R.'s astonishingly modern 'Empress' line of 1891, the Ottawa river steamer, the 'Sovereign', and the 'Passport', a mail paddle-steamer which sailed from Lake Ontario to Montreal." Dust jacket has minor edge rubbing, very tiny tear at bottom of spine.

(This book) gives a vivid account of the origins and growth of this impressive institution, which each year touches the lives of hundreds of thousands, from researchers to school classes thronging the galleries, to senior citizens involved in special programs. (The author) uses a biographical framework for the story of this exciting institution. First on the scene are the founders, such memorable figures as Sir Edmund Walker and Charles Trick Currelly. Then come the early directors, curators, and technicians, whose research and discoveries in every branch of the natural sciences and art and archaeology contributed to the Royal Ontario Museum's growing international reputation. In the aftermath of World War II a new generation of museum men and women took up the challenge of keeping the Royal Ontario Musuem one of the last combined science and art and archaeology musuems of first rank in the world. The unfolding story, with accomplishements, stresses, and strains interwoven, is captivating." One tiny corner bump, tiny bump at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front board. He travelled more than 7,000 miles by bus along the world's longest national highway, the Trans Canada that runs from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The result is a portrait of the immense land, a travel book lit by memories and imagination, and at the same time a chorus of Canadian voices, as the seatmates who travel with him tell their stories.
