62 Wild, Roland. Foreword by the Honorable W.A.C. Bennett. (Amor De Cosmos). AMOR DE COSMOS.
Ryerson, Toronto, (1958).
146 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "An outstanding biography of the second premier of the Province of British Columbia. Amor De Cosmos is the man who was chiefly responsible for British Columbia's coming into Confederation. He is one of the most colourful men in the history of the Province. He has often been overshadowed as a personality because people only remember him as a man who changed in name from Smith. His career reveals the conditions of living at the time, the challenging personalities who carved out the new colony, and the position in which the Province was regarded by Britain." Dust jacket has minor edgewear/wrinkling/rubbing, crease line down front panel near front flap-fold. VG+/VG-

63 Williams, David R. THE MAN FOR A NEW COUNTRY: SIR MATTHEW BAILLIE BEGBIE.
Sidney, British Columbia Gray's Publishing 1977 0888260687 / 9780888260680 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
333 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(B)iography of Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, the first judge of British Columbia, who, after his death, became known as 'The Hanging Judge'. An extremely humane, literate, generous, humorous and fair-minded man, this misnomer has prevented appreciation of his well-rounded personality and his importance in the development of British Columbia. A successful lawyer in London, he left England to seek adventure. He found it quickly, during the gold rush days, and the Cariboo area, around Barkerville, was the locale of most of his work before 1871. Though many officials preferred to stay in Victoria, Begbie travelled constantly, mainly on horseback - camping out, baking his own bread, and living off the land, as he established British law throughout the enormous area. This book is an account of a highly-talented man: speaker of several languages and Indian dialects; mathematician, meteorologist and cartographer; classical scholar and student of history and literature; musician and artist; hunter and outdoorsman; courageous judge. He ranks as an outstanding Canadian pioneer." Light edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on top of text block, tiny stain on bottom of text block, faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate rubbing, very small tear at top of spine archivally taped, one or two tiny chips, two tiny dents on front hinge.

64 Wilson, J.W. PEOPLE IN THE WAY: THE HUMAN ASPECTS OF THE COLUMBIA RIVER PROJECT.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1973 0802052851 / 9780802052858 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
200 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "In 1964 Canada and the United States agreed on a mammoth scheme for the development of the Columbia River. Three large dams were built by the provincially owned BC Hydro Authority, and these dams, by flooding the valleys behind them, affected the lives of hundreds of people whose houses, farms, villages, and cemeteries were to disappear under water. Essentially, this book is about reality, the reality of the Columbia River project in relation to the people of the Arrow Lakes region. As a unique and readable case study it tries to describe not only what happened as Hydro's many activities and programs came together in the Arrow Lakes, but how and why it all happened. It concentrates on the developmental and people-oriented programs, incuding those dealing with property acquisition, compensation, resettlement, and community relations. The book takes an interdisciplinary approach as it pictures the project and its effects as seen by the people of the lakes." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing, some old tape on inside edges.

65 Woodcock, George. A PICTURE HISTORY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA.
Edmonton Hurtig 1980 0888301855 / 9780888301857 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
240 pp, 11 1/4" H. "With almost four hundred (b&w) illustrations - which include paintings, drawings, maps, and original documents as well as a splendid section of fascinating photographs - the story of British Columbia is presented here in all its exciting contrast. In telling the story of Canada's western-most province, George Woodcock has vividly caught its unique character. (He) presents the varied personalities who shaped the province: Canadian fur traders and British naval captains; genteel citizens of nineteenth-century Victoria and brawling miners in Barkerville; high-minded missionaries and hard-living railroad builders; land speculators, farmers, politicians, journalists, industrialists, and of course the original inhabitants, the Coast Indians with their rich cultural traditions. (This book) spans the whole range from the age of the dinosaurs to the politics of the 1980s, and it includes (many) fascinating details. History comes alive as, picture by picture, Woodcock traces the development of a small settlement on Vancouver Island into the thriving province we know today." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing with a few tiny scuffs on rear panel.
