With lively humor and sophistication, Mr. Magee entertains and enlightens as he tells amusing and suspenseful anecdotes about the people he has encountered, the places he has visited, and the events he has attended in the course of nearly half a century in the rare book trade. (His) vignettes of the many and varied clients, confreres, dear friends and strangers with whom he has dealt are a charming pageant of human beings - sometimes eccentric, amusing or moving - always vivid to the reader." ROY VERNON SOWERS: A LIFE IN RARE BOOKS., Mason, Roger Burford. (Roy Vernon Sowers.)
65 Mason, Roger Burford. (Roy Vernon Sowers.) ROY VERNON SOWERS: A LIFE IN RARE BOOKS.
Toronto Subway Books 1997 0968166040 / 9780968166048 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
93 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). One of the trade edition of 950 copies. B&w illustrations. "A Canadian whose first shop, in the mid-1920s, was a mecca for Toronto collectors and writers, Sowers later settled in Southern California. There he dealt rarities to the emerging carriage trade and subsequently worked at the famous Huntington Library. Later still, he was a conspicuous book- and print-dealer at a succession of locations in San Francisco, where he also patronized and promoted the fine-press movement. Sowers, who died in 1970, spent his last years gathering books in Britain and Europe for resale through catalogues from his remote fruit farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His catalogues (he issued seventy-nine in all) were notable for more than the often extraordinary books they described so knowledgeably, from modern first editions (in the first years of his career) to titles in early medicine and the history of science (areas which Sowers helped to make fashionable). His catalogues were themselves collected for the grumpy erudition of their introductory essays, pieces which grew more curmudgeonly as Sowers aged. In a trade that reveres both learning and eccentricity, Roy Vernon Sowers was held in special regard." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean.

E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL., Moore, Doris Langley.
67 Moore, Doris Langley. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL.
Philadelphia Chilton Books 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
313 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Publication of this first biography ever written about E. Nesbit (1858-1924), whose books for children have delighted readers young and old, is a literary event of major importance. Mrs. Langley Moore has written a new introduction to the present edition, telling a number of things that had to be omitted from the original work, when so many of E. Nesbit's contemporaries or members of her family were still alive. Also, the entire book has been revised and relevant material that either had to be left out originally, or has been discovered since, has been added. Edith Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a young journalist and enthusiastic Socialist, in 1880. He took the chair at the first meeting of the Fabian Society and both were active in the Fabian movement. When Bland, while ill, was defrauded by a business partner, Edith Nesbit was forced to earn the family's living. She began to write poems, short stories, and recitiations, and made hand painted Christmas cards. After fifteen years of literary hack work, in which she produced some thirty-three books, she hit her stride with the writing of 'The Treasure Seekers', the first of the stories about the irrepressible Bastable children. Among the other books that have made her a household favorite are 'The Wouldbegoods', 'Five Children and It', 'The House of Arden', and 'The Story of the Amulet'. (The author) has given us a remarkable portrait of the genesis of a writer, and the writer's world. In seeking out her information she contacted many of the most eminent literary and theatrical figures in England at the time." Minor toning to margins of pages, light toning and faint foxing mark on fore-edge of text block, minor soiling on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, general light browning - more on spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear sticker removal/soiling mark at top corner of front panel, very small foxing mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.
Price: 15.00 USD

THE PENNY HISTORIES: A STUDY OF CHAPBOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS OVER TWO CENTURIES., Neuburg, Victor E.
70 Neuburg, Victor E. THE PENNY HISTORIES: A STUDY OF CHAPBOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS OVER TWO CENTURIES.
New York Harcourt, Brace & World 1969 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
227 pp, 12mo (7" H), red cloth spine with lettering/border in gold, cream paper-covered boards reproducing the illustration from the dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. Includes a section on chapbooks in America. Tiny mark on verso of free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear - archivally taped.

FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS., Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter.
75 Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter. FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS.
Kansas City Andews and McMeel 1995 0836204875 / 9780836204872 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Maxwell Perkins.
213 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w drawings by Maxwell Perkins, photographs. "Among book editors, none is quite so revered as Maxwell Perkins. During the years he worked in New York City's Charles Scribner's Sons, the legendary editor helped brilliant minds focus thoughts into literature, shaped manuscripts into classics, then championed writers into best-selling authors. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, and Marcia Davenport were only a few authors who had Perkins to thank for at least some of their success. Behind the scenes, however, this literary genius was a devoted father to five daughters - Bertha, Elizabeth, Louise, Jane, and Nancy. Because he wanted the girls to know and love the family homestead in Windsor, Vermont he sent them there every summer and corresponded with them daily. From thoughts about the people he met to reminiscences of favorite family vacations, Perkins provided a vivid presence in his daughters' lives, whether he was with them or not. In (this book), the touching correspondence Perkins created for his daughters has been gathered into a memento of a great man. It is obvious that Maxwell Perkins was more than just a noted editor - he was a man with a deep and abiding love for his family." Dust jacket has soft crease along top edge of rear flap.
