INFINITE RICHES: THE ADVENTURES OF A RARE BOOK DEALER., Magee, David. Introduction by Lawrence Clark Powell.
61 Magee, David. Introduction by Lawrence Clark Powell. INFINITE RICHES: THE ADVENTURES OF A RARE BOOK DEALER.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1973 0839735537 / 9780839735533 First Canadian Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
274 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "Life in the rare book business can be filled with excitement and surprise, as described by David Magee, San Francisco antiquarian bookseller, in this witty and highly civilized account of some of his adventures here and abroad. With lively humor and sophistication, Mr. Magee entertains and enlightens as he tells amusing and suspenseful anecdotes about the people he has encountered, the places he has visited, and the events he has attended in the course of nearly half a century in the rare book trade. (His) vignettes of the many and varied clients, confreres, dear friends and strangers with whom he has dealt are a charming pageant of human beings - sometimes eccentric, amusing or moving - always vivid to the reader." Very small stamp mark (bird) on top of text block, minor wrinkle at top of spine, light toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, light browning at inside edges and on flap-folds, one tiny edge tear.

ROY VERNON SOWERS: A LIFE IN RARE BOOKS., Mason, Roger Burford. (Roy Vernon Sowers.)
62 Mason, Roger Burford. (Roy Vernon Sowers.) ROY VERNON SOWERS: A LIFE IN RARE BOOKS.
Toronto Subway Books 1997 0968166040 / 9780968166048 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
93 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). One of the trade edition of 950 copies. B&w illustrations. "A Canadian whose first shop, in the mid-1920s, was a mecca for Toronto collectors and writers, Sowers later settled in Southern California. There he dealt rarities to the emerging carriage trade and subsequently worked at the famous Huntington Library. Later still, he was a conspicuous book- and print-dealer at a succession of locations in San Francisco, where he also patronized and promoted the fine-press movement. Sowers, who died in 1970, spent his last years gathering books in Britain and Europe for resale through catalogues from his remote fruit farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His catalogues (he issued seventy-nine in all) were notable for more than the often extraordinary books they described so knowledgeably, from modern first editions (in the first years of his career) to titles in early medicine and the history of science (areas which Sowers helped to make fashionable). His catalogues were themselves collected for the grumpy erudition of their introductory essays, pieces which grew more curmudgeonly as Sowers aged. In a trade that reveres both learning and eccentricity, Roy Vernon Sowers was held in special regard." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean.

227 pp, 12mo (7" H), red cloth spine with lettering/border in gold, cream paper-covered boards reproducing the illustration from the dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. Includes a section on chapbooks in America. Tiny mark on verso of free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear - archivally taped.

FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS., Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter.
70 Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter. FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS.
Kansas City Andews and McMeel 1995 0836204875 / 9780836204872 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Maxwell Perkins.
213 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w drawings by Maxwell Perkins, photographs. "Among book editors, none is quite so revered as Maxwell Perkins. During the years he worked in New York City's Charles Scribner's Sons, the legendary editor helped brilliant minds focus thoughts into literature, shaped manuscripts into classics, then championed writers into best-selling authors. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, and Marcia Davenport were only a few authors who had Perkins to thank for at least some of their success. Behind the scenes, however, this literary genius was a devoted father to five daughters - Bertha, Elizabeth, Louise, Jane, and Nancy. Because he wanted the girls to know and love the family homestead in Windsor, Vermont he sent them there every summer and corresponded with them daily. From thoughts about the people he met to reminiscences of favorite family vacations, Perkins provided a vivid presence in his daughters' lives, whether he was with them or not. In (this book), the touching correspondence Perkins created for his daughters has been gathered into a memento of a great man. It is obvious that Maxwell Perkins was more than just a noted editor - he was a man with a deep and abiding love for his family." Dust jacket has soft crease along top edge of rear flap.

76 Retan, Walter and Risom, Ole. (Richard Scarry.) THE BUSY, BUSY WORLD OF RICHARD SCARRY.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1997 0810940000 / 9780810940000 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Richard Scarry.
159 pp, 4to (12" H). Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout in color and b&w with photographs and reproductions of Scarry's work. "In dozens of books, with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations, Scarry revealed to kids that the everyday world was a place that could be understood - and that learning was fun. Scarry's 'Best Word Book Ever', for example, puts names to everyday objects; 'Busy, Busy World' explores geography country by country; and 'What Do People Do All Day?' delivers exactly what the title promises. Such a man is worth knowing more about, and this first biography presents the debonair, humorous, charming figure that Scarry was. In words and pictures the book traces (his) life from his roots in Boston to a post-World War II art school training and a brief career in advertising. Bored with selling products, Scarry put himself forward as a children's book illustrator and began turning out pictures for other people's words. Soon, he himself was writing texts, and eventually he hit upon the magic touch that catapulted him to nearly universal popularity - a menagerie full of animal characters who behaved like humans, but with unfailing good humor and grace. Through the personalities of these often mischievous creatures - the ubiquitous Lowly Worm, Tinker and Tanker, Sergeant Murphy - whom children could identify with but not have to worry about, Scarry conceived a parade of books that parents and children alike could pore over for pictures or read time after time. Long before Waldo challenged young eyes to find him in picture books, Goldbug was hiding here and there on Scarry's pages. Learning more about the charm of those books and the genius of the man who created them will enlighten and delight any reader of this book." Small tear (archivally taped) at bottom edge of title page, very light wear and a few tiny dents at bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, edge wrinkling, one small tear archivally taped, crease at top edge of front flap.

Ann Arbor, Michigan UMI Research Press 1985 0835716945 / 9780835716949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
166 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w reproductions. "The purpose of this study is to give an annotated bibliography of the books and discuss the authors whose words were handprinted by the Woolfs. It has proved easiest to investigate the books and understand how their authors came to be connected with the Press by considering them in groups based on their relationship with the Woolfs. Of course the Woolfs printed their own works and that of their friends. They also printed work by people they admired and wanted to encourage in their endeavor to reach the public eye. Since most of these people developed careers of some note, it is possible to give an indication of their relationships to the Woolfs and what these particular books meant to them at the time of publication." From the Introduction. Contents: List of Illustrations; Preface; Introduction; The Press in the Lives of the Woolfs; Books by the Woolfs; Books by Friends; Books by Acquaintances; Books by Worthy Unknown; The Woolfs and the Book Arts Tradition; Illustrations of the Books in Order of Publication; Appendix A: List of Handprinted Books in Order of Publication; Appendix B: List of Handprinted Books in Order by Author; Notes; Bibliography; Index.
