WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
63 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

London Bracken 1986 0946495793 / 9780946495795 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Kate Greenaway.
301 pp, 9" H. Kate Greenaway "studied art at South Kensington and the Slade, where her fellow students were Lady Butler and Helen Allingham. To start with, she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards, as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window', which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose', 'The Language of Flowers', 'Marigold Garden', 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', to name but a few. This biography, written by her friends M.H. Spielman and G.S. Layard, was published in 1905, just four years after her death. It tells the story of her life and relates the romantic circumstances of her great friendship with John Ruskin. It is required reading for all followers of Kate Greenaway and is accompaneid by over 50 colour illutrations by the artist as well as many black and white and line illustrations." LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER., Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.)
66 Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.) LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER.
London Frederick Warne 1992 0723237778 / 9780723237778 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Beatrix Potter.
240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). "The chief recipients (of her letters) were the family of her former governess, Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long, lively 'picture letters', copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives, members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories, all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters (in this book) are shown in facsimile and (it) is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters, many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards, some areas of faint discoloration at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has some edge wrinkling, light edge wear, one small taped tear at top edge, light dampness stains at inside bottom edge, light rub marks.

WRESTLING WITH A PENCIL: THE LIFE OF A FREELANCE ARTIST., Thelwell, Norman.
67 Thelwell, Norman. WRESTLING WITH A PENCIL: THE LIFE OF A FREELANCE ARTIST.
London Methuen 1986 0413593207 / 9780413593207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Norman Thelwell.
192 pp, 9 7/8" H. Pictorial endpapers, beautifully and profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "For over twenty-five years Norman Thelwell's cartoons, drawings and landscape paintings have delighted millions of people all over the world. His drawings of sporting pursuits, of human beings at play and of many other countryside subjects are the product of a unique comic genius; the term 'Thelwell pony' has passed into the English language. Now Norman Thelwell has written an account of his life from early childhood to the present. For the first time he opens up his experiences as an artist and humorist, in an informal, accessible and entertaining way. He describes his early love of drawing, the development of his skills in the war, his training at art school, his career as a teacher and a newspaper cartoonist and his subsequent life as a freelance artist. He discusses his work for 'Punch', the development of his ideas, his techniques, the making of his books and his other projects. (This) is also a personal story: of his childhood in Birkenhead; his experiences as a soldier in Britain and India during and after the war; his family; his home life in Hampshire; the people he has met; the houses he has restored. This mixture of personal and professional reminiscence is rich in anecdote and makes a lively and often amusing story. It is accompanied by a wide range of colour and black -and -white illustrations. In addition to the cartoons for which he is famous there are selections from his work as a serious landscape painter and samples from a lifetime of sketchbooks." Tiny white mark on rear board, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top of spine and flaps, very minor rubbing, 1" line indentation on spine.

THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF., Weber, Nicholas Fox.
74 Weber, Nicholas Fox. THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1989 0810918935 / 9780810918931 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff.
191 pp, 12" H. Bright red cloth with blindstamped Babar on front board, white lettering on spine, yellow endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "Babar was created by the painter Jean de Brunhoff, who produced the first seven books of the series between 1931 and 1937, the year of his untimely death. In 1946 his artist son Laurent took up where Jean had left off. He wrote and illustrated his first Babar book when he was twenty-one and has now done thirty Babar books. In bringing Babar back, Laurent was holding on to an enchanted childhood as well as keeping alive the legacy of his beloved father. The elephant actually had been the invention of his mother, Cecile, who thought up the first adventure one evening as a bedtime story for Laurent and his younger brother, Mathieu. In 'The Art of Babar' (the author) has worked with Laurent de Brunhoff to recapture aspects of the artist's childhood in France and the values that he grew up with. He has a lot to say about how both he and his father used watercolor, and the author has explored this technical aspect of their art. The reader is presented with the development from rough sketches to final illustrations; much of this material has never before been reproduced." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
