SPLENDID HERITAGE: HISTORICAL BUILDINGS OF ONTARIO., Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. Introduction by Beth Hanna. Foreword By W. John McIntyre.
61 Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. Introduction by Beth Hanna. Foreword By W. John McIntyre. SPLENDID HERITAGE: HISTORICAL BUILDINGS OF ONTARIO.
Belleville, Ontario Mika 1992 0921341504 / 9780921341505 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
144 pp, square (10 3/8" x 10 3/8"). Colour photographs. "(A) celebration of Ontario's heritage. Its many pictures provide a panoramic view of the province's architecture from the late 18th century to the Victorian era. Its text combines architectural description with the story of some of the people who built and used these buildings, including (no doubt) some local folkore along the way. In other words, it is not a book for scholars; but rather, a book intended for all people who love old buildings and a book which may help to inspire interest among those who may never have stopped to look at an old building before." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

304 pp, folio (14 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840133732 Profusely illustrated in colour. "Built to astonish and to celebrate the magnificence of the most powerful families in the world, royal palaces and houses are the consequences of an age in which the splendor and opulence of a prince or a people could be measured by the decor of a salon, by the grandeur of a building or the originality of a fountain. Suspended between the sky and the earth, as occurred in the Far East, or solidly rooted to the ground, as was the norm in Europe, the house of the monarch has alwys been the meeting point of two minds: that of the master, who saw in his house the expression of his power and creativity, and that of the architect a n d t e a m s of craftsmen who built it for him, often creating a noble monument rather than a place to live....This book tells of the mysteries and legends of the buildings and the official and secret versions of the history of their occupants. T he t e xt i s co mplemented by a series of splendid photographs that together offer the reader a visit through space and time to the most famous palaces of the world where the lives of royal families and their courts burned bright and where bea uty mi xed w ith po we r." THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971., Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella.
64 Munk, Nina and Gotlieb, Rachel. Foreword by Samantha Sannella. THE ART OF CLAIRTONE: THE MAKING OF A DESIGN ICON 1958-1971.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart / Design Exchange 2008 0771065078 / 9780771065071 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
171 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 1/4" D). "For a decade, in the 1960s, Clairtone Sound Corporation captured the spirit of the times: sophisticated, cosmopolitan, liberated. From its modern oiled-walnut and teak stereos to its minimalist logos and promotional materials, Clairtone produced a powerful and enduring body of design work. Founded in 1958 by two young Canadians, Peter Munk and David Gilmour, Clairtone quickly became known for its iconic designs and masterful advertising campaigns. Its acclaimed Project G stereo, with its space-age styling, epitomized the Swinging Sixties. Famously, Hugh Hefner owned a Project G. So did Frank Sinatra. Oscar Peterson affirmed that his music sounded as good on a G as it did live. In 1967, suggesting how deeply Clairtone's G series had come to be identified with popular culture, the G2 appeared in 'The Graduate' with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. With 250 illustrations, including previously unpublished drawings, rare film stills, confidential memoradums, and original photography, (this) is a candid and in-depth look at the company's skyrocketing success - and sensational collapse. Through the recollections of those who knew Claritone best, from its founders to its designers, engineers, and salesmen, and with comments from Karim Rashid, Douglas Coupland, Tyler Brule, and Bruce Mau, among others, this elegant book, published on the 50th anniversary of Clairtone's launch, celebrates an iconoclastic company that once seemed to represent the promise of Canada." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel, soft wrinkling at top of rear flap and at top of front panel.

OLD KENTUCKY ARCHITECTURE. COLONIAL, FEDERAL, GREEK REVIVAL, GOTHIC, AND OTHER TYPES ERECTED PRIOR TO THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES., Newcomb, Rexford.
65 Newcomb, Rexford. OLD KENTUCKY ARCHITECTURE. COLONIAL, FEDERAL, GREEK REVIVAL, GOTHIC, AND OTHER TYPES ERECTED PRIOR TO THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES.
Bonanza, New York, reprint (copyright 1940).
Unpaginated foreword, introductory essay and list of plates plus 130 b&w plates (photographs, plans, drawings) and frontispiece, 4to (12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled la rgely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by as s o c i a t ion with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, r ec ou rs e wa s had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansio ns whi ch to th is day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the v ogu es a nd fas hion s o f the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acc lima ted, how ever , suc h vo gues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, heavy fading to color at top edge of boards, light fading to color on spine. Dust jacket has light wear and w rnkli ng a t top /botto m edg e of spine and flap-folds, creasing on top 3" of spine, slight browning on spine, light rubbing, one small tear archivally taped. THE STORY OF BUCKINGHAM PALACE: THE ROYAL HOME THROUGH SEVEN REIGNS., Peacocke, Marguerite D.
69 Peacocke, Marguerite D. THE STORY OF BUCKINGHAM PALACE: THE ROYAL HOME THROUGH SEVEN REIGNS.
Odhams, London, (1951).
288 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, plans. "...tells the story of Buckingham Palace through the reigns of seven British monarchs, describing how and why it was built and the purposes for which it has been used since its foundation. It traces the history of the Palace from its earliest origins as the private home of Sir William Blake, erected in 1623 on a site that was formerly the scene of a rowdy, disreputable pleasure-garden. And it reacalls three centuries of replanning and rebuilding from which emerged the Palace that today is the premier residence of the British Royal Family...this is not the impersonal history of a building...it is the warm, human story of all the people who, through the years, have helped to make the Palace what it is today - from architects to ambassadors, from statemen to stonemasons, from kings and queens to kitchen maids and cabinet-makers..." 1 1/2" split to paper on inside front hinge, some very light browning to endpapers, slight small bump to corners, light foxing marks on edges of textblock, very light browning to edges of spine and boards. 96 pp, 8 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "For over a century, Windermere House has symbolized the very essence of Muskoka. Its twin towers and proud gables captivated thousands of visitors. When the resort burned on February 27, 1996 people felt they'd lost a friend. This is the story of the profound effect this building has had on the Muskoka region, from its earliest days in the Aitken family, through its terrible destruction and miraculous rise from the ashes. The story unfolds through the memories of family, guests and former staff members, who recount the inner workings of the resort, its idiosyncrasies and its appeal. After Windermere House was destroyed people realized they must have it back, exactly as it was. Today, the resurrected Windermere House not only has the look but also the feel that made its forerunner truly the Lady of the Lakes." Societe Jersiaise and The Rector and Churchwardens of Saint Brelade, 1990.

ISBN 0901897191 "Externally, the Fishermen's Chapel is a plain, rectangular structure with no sign of ornamentation or suggestion of the glory that it holds within. But once inside, the visitor is confronted with an experience of unparalleled delight: the walls and the stone-vaulted ceiling are covered with Old and New Testament scenes, executed in bright colours. For more than six hundred years these medieval paintings have survived the ravages of time and man, and although they are now far from complete, their impact is nevertheless stunning: the message they conveyed to medieval worshippers is still there to be read today. Between 1982 and 1988, an integrated programme of research and investigation, conservation and repair, refurbishment and revitalization, took place with an interdisciplinary and internationally recruited team. The results of their findings have now been distilled and are presented in this volume." Chapter headings: Historical Introduction; A Brief Description of the Chapel; The Wall Paintings; Archaeological Investigations; Structural Analysis; Architectural Style and Dating; Conservation and Restoration; Synthesis and Interpretation; Technical Appendices. Montreal Tundra Hard Cover Near Fine Bonnie Shemie.
Five books from the Native Dwellings series. * A sixth book was issued (Houses of Wood: the Northwest coast) but is not included here.* 24 pages each, in glazed pictorial boards with map endpapers. Illustrated in colour and b&w with drawings and diagrams. 1. Houses of Snow, Skin and Bones - ISBN 0887762409, 1989 - "Northerners used whatever materials were to hand: snow, stone, earth, skin, bones and any driftwood found along the shores. How each type of dwelling was con-structed and lived in is told here through a simple text and illustrations that are informative and artistic." 2. House of Bark - ISBN 0887762468, 1990 - "Although native tribes build many sizes and styles of bark dwellings according to their survival needs, three main types emerge: the tipi, the wigwam and the longhouse. How all of these were constructed is made clear in Bonnie Shemie's detailed drawings and made humanly relevant in the beautiful double-page colored illustrations that are works of art." 3. Houses of Hide and Earth - ISBN 0887762697, 1991 - "The western plains are a windswept land of extreme summer heat and winter cold, without trees or other natural shelter. The Indians built their houses with the only materials they had: the skins of the buffalo they hunted or the soil dug from the earth around them. How they improved and adapted these materials to their needs and environment is the subject of this fascinating book. (Shemie) also discusses the earthlodge, dating from AD 700 and unlike anything we have today. Both tipi and earthlodge were laid out according to religious beliefs and symbols, as were other prairie buildings such as arbors, burial platforms, sweat lodges and the impressive structures used to celebrate the sun dance." 4. Mounds of Earth and Shell - ISBN 0887763189, 1993 - "Of all the buildings made by the Native peoples across North America, the least known and understood are the mounds. Who built these structures? Why did they build them? And where did the builders go? Mounds built of shell, and then of earth, date back over 3000 years. They were used for religious ceremonies, burial sites and hills to hold homes of the powerful. From Florida as far north as Ontario, and from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi Valley these structures are keys to our understanding of the earliest civilizations of North America's Native peoples." 5. House of Adobe - ISBN 0887763308, 1995 - "In the harsh, dry landscape of the American Southwest, the Native peoples built some of the continent's most enduring architecture out of adobe and stone. Bonnie Shemie explores the techniques used to create these dwellings and takes us to the impressive stone structures of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde, Colorado, the many pueblos of the region, and explains the significance of the kiva." Two volumes with a few very tiny dents on top edge of boards.

76 Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa. EERO SAARINEN.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1971, first American printing.
130 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, architectural drawings. "One of the most distinguished American architects of the mid-twentieth century, Eero Saarinen was born in 1910 in Finland, coming to the United States with his family in 1923. He was trained at the Yale University School of Architecture. After a period spent in Europe, he returned to the United States to join his father, Eliel Saarinen, in his practice in Cranbrook. Apart fro m h i s early furniture designs with Charles Eames, Saarinen's first truly personal success was in the competition for the Jefferson Memorial at St. Louis, Missouri, in which he submitted a design for the huge arch, clad in steel, which stands in t ha t c it y. Saarinen was responsible for several innovations, especially the use of thin high-performance curtain walls on a huge scale, a technique that he developed in the IBM Research Center at Yorktown, New York, and in the Bell Research Labo rat or ies at Holmdel, New Jersey. He also designed the first large-scale concrete-shell buildings in the United States (the Kresge Auditorium at the Massacussetts Institute of Technology), the controversial American Embassy in Grosvenor Square, Lond on, ano ther embassy building in Oslo, and the Banque Lambert headquarters in Brussels. But it was perhaps in his designs for airports (especially the TWA terminal at Kennedy Airport, New York, with its emphasis on a feeling of movemnt, and the D ulle s Int ernat ional Airport near Washington, with its mobile lounges) that Saarinen made his most original contribution to the architecture of our time." 77 Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa. RICHARD NEUTRA.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1971, first American edition.
136 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, floor plans. "The reputation of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) is founded on his finely executed and superbly landscaped domestic buildings. Born and educated in Vi enna, where he was influenced by the leading European architects, notably Adolph Loos, Neutra developed the intense dislike of ornament that was to characterize his work. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 and in 1926 established a pract i c e in California where the majority of his buildings are to be found. His highly individual style is characterized by the adoption of plate glass for exterior walls, combined with overhanging eaves, outrigged columns and integrated pools, and b y th e e xploitation of the subtropical California vegetation to create privacy." 239 pp, square small 4to (10" x 10"), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0701131764 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Here is a richly illustrated chronicle of some of England's most beautiful houses, built between 1240 and the early seventeenth century. Hidden in spectacular countryside, often at the end of long, narrow driveways, most are privately owned. Some are lived in by the families who built them hundreds of years ago. Before Christopher Simon Sykes' wo r k f o r this book, few of them had ever been written about or photographed. A medieval fortified manor, a timber-framed hall on a moated island, a seventeenth-century summer house nestling in a vast, ancient lime tree; winding turret stairs, m ul li o ne d wi n dows, priest holes, Great Halls with hammer beam roofs, superb plasterwork, stonework and panelling - these are some of the many treasures which (the author) has discovered and photographed for this delightful book." Book is sligh tly co ck ed, l arg e gift inscription on verso of free front endpaper, book very slightly cracked at half-title page, light waviness at fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has minor edge wrinkling, soft wrinkle on rear pa nel, ver y l ight ru bbin g. Very Good/Very Good

493 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H). INSCRIBED ON HALF TITLE PAGE: "BEST WISHES FROM NANCY Z. TAUSKY 7 DEC. 1986 / WITH GOOD WISHES - LYNNE D. DISTEFANO 7 DECEMBER 1986". "Beginning with a discussion of the area's history, (the authors) explore the work of the most prominent architectural firm in Victorian London (Ontario) - Robinson, Tracy, Durand and Moore - and its role in the development of southwestern Ontario. From their focus on specific architects emerges a broader picture of the factors that typically shaped Victorian towns. They consider the various theories and movements that were given expression in Victorian building design, the social influences on the period's architecture, the evolution of building technology, and the state of the architectural profession in general during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the heart of the book, of course, are the buildings. Churches, banks, schools, courthouses, stores, and all manner of public buildings, as well as private homes are represented. Extensively illustrated, the book includes old photographs, reproductions of drawings and plans, and contemporary photographs of buildings which still stand, taken specially for this volume by Ian MacEachern." Minor browning in margins of pages and edges of textblock, tiny surface paper loss at top of inside front hinge, very light edge rubbing, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine .
