THOMAS DAVIES IN EARLY CANADA., Hubbard, R.H., edited with introduction by.
63 Hubbard, R.H., edited with introduction by. THOMAS DAVIES IN EARLY CANADA.
Canada Oberon 1972 0887500684 / 9780887500688 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
64 pp, oblong 8vo (8 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with reproductions of Davies' works in colour and b&w. "When most people think of the early Canadian landscape they think of William Henry Bartlett. Actually, Bartlett was by no means the only painter in early Canada, nor was he the best. One of the earliest, and one of the best of them all, was Thomas Davies. Davies first came to Canada in the seventeen-fifties. He came again in the sixties and then again in the eighties. He came as a commissioned officer in the Royal Artillery. His job was to record the topography of the country for military purposes. But he did much more than that. He preserved for us an exact and faithful likeness of the people, the towns and above all the landscape of early Canada. Little was known of his work until 1953, when a collection of his views was sold at Christie's. Twenty of these were bought by the National Gallery of Canada, others by the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. It is now possible for the first time to appreciate the remarkable quality of his work. His water-colours are brimful of authentic details of early life in Canada. And they possess a calm and vivid beauty seen nowhere else in Canadian landscapes of the period." Most pages have a very soft small indentation and/or soft handling creases - more on page leaf 23/24, nine page leaves have a crease at top gutter area from manufacturing process, two tiny corner bumps on boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light rubbing, very light browning on spine and at edges, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

James, Stokely Carmichael - the roster of immigrants from the Carribean who have made a profound impact on the development of radical politics in the United States is extensive. In this magisterial and lavishly illustrated work, Winston James focuses on the twentieth century's first waves of migrants from the Caribbean and their contribution to political dissidence in America. Examining how the characteristics of the societies they left shaped their perceptions of the land to which they traveled, James draws sharp distinctions between Hispanic, Anglophone, and other non-Hispanic arrivals. He explores the interconnections between the Cuban independence struggle, Puerto Rican nationalism, Afro-American feminism, and black communism in the first turbulent decades of the twentieth century. He also provides fascinating insights into the peculiarities of Puerto Rican radicalism's impact in New York City and recounts the remarkable story of Afro-Cuban radicalism in Florida." New York Harper & Brothers 1953 Hard Cover Very Good Fair

Contents: Foreword; About People and Atomic Energy; The New Force; From Manhattan to Nagasaki; Postwar Development; Destruction Unlimited; The Atomic Impasse; Battlefield A-Weapons; Peacetime Power; Atomic Engines; The Atom - Man's Servant; Secrecy and the Atom; Power for the Future; Index. "The story beings with early atomic experiments in distant laboratories in Italy and Germany and leads swiftly up to Professor Einstein's fateful letter to President Roosevelt, and the overnight mobilization of American science. We see the mammoth plants at Oak Ridge and Hanford thrown up in haste to solve the riddle of separating the U-235 isotope from the U-238, the first controlled chain reaction in the squash courts of a Middlewest university; the crucial work in the laboratories at Los Alamos. (It) brings the military and diplomatic story up to date, detailing the atomic scientists' 'march on Washington', the establishment of the AEC, the Bikini tests, the multiplying of the A-bomb's destructive power; and, within seven short years, the coming of the H-bomb. And there is the story of atomic energy's present and future potential in peace as well as in war - as an instrument for industrial power as well as military; for science, medicine, agriculture as well as (perhaps instead of) strategic and tactical weapons." "(S)trips away the glamorous image of the notorious gang and reveals its 'brothers' for what they are: murderers, drug dealers and big businessmen with an eye to expanding their territory. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER., Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother.
78 Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1958 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
420 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The life of Billy Mitchell epitomizes the story of the development of air power, and the author presents this life against the background of an age that was revolutionized by the rise of the flying machine. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Mitchell was the scion of a dynastic fam-ily, grandson of an empire builder, son of a United States Senator. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. From that moment on his story belongs to the annals of his age. Mr. Levine has had access to the private files of General Mitchell, to the archives of the Mitchell family, and has also had the co-operation of many of Mitchell's closest friends and associates. The result is a fact-filled chronicle, with astonishing anecdotes, exceptional personal material, unknown pages of aviation lore, a story that brings to light striking facts and dramatic personalities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Fiorello LaGuardia, General Arnold, and scores of others appear in new or little-known roles. Mitchell himself cuts a heroic national figure, the indomitable crusader, the pioneer as well as the prophet of air power." Contents: Foreword; Author's Note (New Edition); Father and Son; To the Philippines; From Alaska to Aviation; Musketeer of the Air; Flight to Victory; Blueprint for the Future; Disturber of the Peace; Flying Crusader; "A Bomb was Fired Today"; The Way of an Eagle; Stormy Petrel; What Price Heresy; Judicial Extravaganza; Man Against the Age; Postscript; Mitchell's Own Writings; Index. 80 Littleton, James. TARGET NATION: CANADA AND THE WESTERN INTELLIGENCE NETWORK.
Toronto Lester & Orpen Dennys 1986 0886191181 / 9780886191184 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
228 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)s military connections between Canada and the U.S. grow ever closer, urgent questions have arisen: do the CIA and other American intelligence organizations manipulate our Canadian intelligence services? How much national autonomy do our intelligence agencies really have? These disturbing questions were brought to (the author's) attention in conversations with authorities at the highest levels of government. Over the last six years he has conducted his investigation through interviews with key players in the RCMP, the new Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), and other branches of both the Canadian and the U.S. governments. Many of them spoke to him with surprising frankness. Here, Littleton exposes the unwritten, secret agreements that exist among the Canadian intelligence services, the CIA and other Western intelligence agencies - without the full knowledge of our top government officials. He reveals how the intelligence services were part of the American attempt to implicate Lester Pearson as a Soviet spy, the dramatic increase in the power of the Canadian intelligence services since the end of the Second World War, and the efforts of the Diefenbaker, Pearson and Trudeau governments to come to grips with U.S. demands to use Canada as a strategic military zone between the two superpowers. As the cold war escalates, so does the pressure on Canad to accommodate Star Wars, Cruise missile testings, and other schemes that require the use of Canadian territory. (This) is a fascinating, disturbing account of how, in the family of the Western intelligence network, the closely linked interests of the secret services are sometimes placed before the welfare of Canada."
