"(S)trips away the glamorous image of the notorious gang and reveals its 'brothers' for what they are: murderers, drug dealers and big businessmen with an eye to expanding their territory. (This) is the incredible story of one man, FBI informant Anthony Tait, who accomplished what law enforcement officials had believed was impossible - on a bet with two Alaska police officers for a steak dinner and a bottle of bourbon, he became the only person ever to infiltrate the Hells Angels organization. After only six years as a Hells Angel, Tait rose up in the ranks to become the right-hand man of Sonny Barger, the famous leader of the Club. By the time the FBI sting operation had reached its conclusion, 42 Hells Angels - including Sonny Barger himself - were jailed on various drug, weapons and murder charges. With the threat of Hells Angels expansion ever-present, and biker wars erupting in cities where the influence of the Hells Angels was once invisible, 'Into the Abyss' is both a chilling true-crime story and a timely warning about the danger in our own backyard." MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER., Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother.
70 Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1958 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
420 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The life of Billy Mitchell epitomizes the story of the development of air power, and the author presents this life against the background of an age that was revolutionized by the rise of the flying machine. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Mitchell was the scion of a dynastic fam-ily, grandson of an empire builder, son of a United States Senator. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. From that moment on his story belongs to the annals of his age. Mr. Levine has had access to the private files of General Mitchell, to the archives of the Mitchell family, and has also had the co-operation of many of Mitchell's closest friends and associates. The result is a fact-filled chronicle, with astonishing anecdotes, exceptional personal material, unknown pages of aviation lore, a story that brings to light striking facts and dramatic personalities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Fiorello LaGuardia, General Arnold, and scores of others appear in new or little-known roles. Mitchell himself cuts a heroic national figure, the indomitable crusader, the pioneer as well as the prophet of air power." Contents: Foreword; Author's Note (New Edition); Father and Son; To the Philippines; From Alaska to Aviation; Musketeer of the Air; Flight to Victory; Blueprint for the Future; Disturber of the Peace; Flying Crusader; "A Bomb was Fired Today"; The Way of an Eagle; Stormy Petrel; What Price Heresy; Judicial Extravaganza; Man Against the Age; Postscript; Mitchell's Own Writings; Index. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, small piece missing at top of spine, light edge wrinkling, light soiling, one small edge tear archivally taped, tiny perforation on rear panel.

71 Littleton, James. TARGET NATION: CANADA AND THE WESTERN INTELLIGENCE NETWORK.
Toronto Lester & Orpen Dennys 1986 0886191181 / 9780886191184 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
228 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)s military connections between Canada and the U.S. grow ever closer, urgent questions have arisen: do the CIA and other American intelligence organizations manipulate our Canadian intelligence services? How much national autonomy do our intelligence agencies really have? These disturbing questions were brought to (the author's) attention in conversations with authorities at the highest levels of government. Over the last six years he has conducted his investigation through interviews with key players in the RCMP, the new Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), and other branches of both the Canadian and the U.S. governments. Many of them spoke to him with surprising frankness. Here, Littleton exposes the unwritten, secret agreements that exist among the Canadian intelligence services, the CIA and other Western intelligence agencies - without the full knowledge of our top government officials. He reveals how the intelligence services were part of the American attempt to implicate Lester Pearson as a Soviet spy, the dramatic increase in the power of the Canadian intelligence services since the end of the Second World War, and the efforts of the Diefenbaker, Pearson and Trudeau governments to come to grips with U.S. demands to use Canada as a strategic military zone between the two superpowers. As the cold war escalates, so does the pressure on Canad to accommodate Star Wars, Cruise missile testings, and other schemes that require the use of Canadian territory. (This) is a fascinating, disturbing account of how, in the family of the Western intelligence network, the closely linked interests of the secret services are sometimes placed before the welfare of Canada." A few tiny bumps to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, three tiny scuffs.

74 Louis-Philippe. Translated from the French by Stephen Becker. Preface by Henry Steele Commager. DIARY OF MY TRAVELS IN AMERICA: LOUIS-PHILIPPE, KING OF FRANCE, 1830-1848.
New York Delacorte Press 1977 0440018447 / 9780440018445 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
202 pp, oblong (7 3/4" H x 10 3/4" D). Colour and b&w illustrations. "In the year 1796, the man who as to become the king of France began a three-and-a-half-year journey through Europe and America. Louis-Philippe, whose father had been guillotined when the monarchy was overthrown, decided that it might be expeditious for him to see a bit of the world. The diary of this journey, held in the vault of the Duc d'Orleans until now, is an elegant gift to America. Louis-Philippe, his two younger brothers, and his manservant dined at Mount Vernon with Washington, toured Niagara Falls, and smoked a peace pipe with the Cherokee Indians. The king's keen perceptions, amusing anecdotes, and aristocratic foibles make for fascinating reading. His brother, the Duc de Montpensier, was an excellent artist, and he recreated much of the scenery of the new world on canvas. His sketches of typically American landscapes enhance the journal's sense of immediacy. This diary, a memoir not only of a voyage, but also of an age and of our own nation, paralllels the exquisite detail of Alexis de Tocqueville. The writings of Louis-Philippe provide fresh insight into the early days of our country: its problems, society, mores." Three small faint soiling marks on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES., Lower, Mark Antony.
76 Lower, Mark Antony. A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES.
Ware Wordsworth 1988 1853269166 / 9781853269165 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good-
443 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The origins of words are always a fascination, and the origins of our own names can tell us a great deal of our family history. But the twists and turns of dialect and other influences often obscure the meanings, and a good eye and ear, and a wide knowledge of places, crafts, professions and languages, are needed to unravel many family names. A sense of humour helps, too, and here Mark Antony Lower takes his place in the tradition of observers of linguistic drift and foible such as Dr. Johnson, H.W. Fowler, Eric Partridge and Ernest Gowers. The book is full of fascinating anecdote and detail, and the introductory chapters cover American nomenclature, Scots, Irish and Welsh, and tables of statistical distribution. As for Mr. Lower's engaging style and unstuffy approach, one need only look at his entry for surnames beginning with the letter 'X', where he admits to following the example of a Northern naturalist 'who introduced into his work a chapter entitled 'Concerning Owls in Iceland', the chapter itself consisted of the words, 'There are no Owls in Iceland'. Mark Antony Lower's 'Dictionary of Surnames' is a book of endless delight, full of both scholarship and surprises." Light browning to pages, moderate browning to top and fore-edge of textblock, light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, two 3" creases at top of front panel.

314 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, floor plans, elevations, drawings, overlays. "For the first time, the architectural history of the town of Lexington and its t wo nationally distinguished campuses has been appraised in a scholarly fashion. This Valley of Virginia community together with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles. The volume is divided into three sections: the town, Washington and Lee, and VMI. In each, an essay on the history of the development of representative styles is followed by a photographic survey of the buildings." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing/soiling, small tear/crease at top edge of front panel and one or two other tiny edge tears - all archivally taped.

79 Macleish, William H. OIL AND WATER: THE STRUGGLE FOR GEORGES BANK.
Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Book is slightly cocked, has minor soiling on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY., McDonough, James Lee.
80 McDonough, James Lee. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1984 0870494252 / 9780870494253 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "In the wake of the bloodshed at Chickamauga, the struggle for Chattanooga became a decisive engagement of the Civil War. McDonough reconstructs the siege and battles as they appeared to both Rebels and Yankees, giving the reader a front-row seat at one of the major dramas in American history. The tale culminates in the complex bid for Missionary Ridge, which ended with the collapse of the Confederate line at its center. Reversing their situation in one final, dramatic hour, Union forces emerged victorious. The Rebels forfeited the advantage offered by the triumph of Chickamauga and now found the tables turned. With Chattanooga in their grasp, the Federals stood in a position to carry the fight deep into the South. The river and railroads both made the city important as a natural passageway that provided the Union with a staging base for military operations. The Rebels, on the other hand, found their railway communications crippled. The Confederacy had earlier been split along the Mississippi River; now it was to be severed by a second line that passed from Nashville to Atlanta via Chattanooga." Very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of front board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
