221 pp + section of b&w plans, photographs at rear, 8vo (9" H). B&w plans, maps, reproductions throughout text - plans and photographs at rear. "(A)n adventure tale of sweeping grandeur: the personal history of a youth who volunteered for war as a loyal subject of George II when New England rose against the French fortress of Louisburg commanding the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the approaches to Quebec and menacing the Boston fishery. The story is a romance in the true sense: it tells of the fears and awareness of a vast world opening to the mind of a young soldier and mariner early away from home and toughened by the cruelty and challenge of armed conflict and the harsh reality of the elements. The novel is based on a single page of pencil-written journal left behind by a young volunteer from Massachusetts: the author has not been able to determine the boy's name or where he lived but only that he served in Pomeroy's regiment at the capture of Louisburg in 1745. The history of Jonathan Steele unfolds as that of a God-fearing thoughtful man whose love of humanity does not blind him to the irony and tragedy of people living in difficult days, nor to their weakness or folly." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light to moderate edge wear, small soft corner crease on front cover, spine slightly twisted.

404 Fredette, Raymond H. Introduction by Tom D. Crouch. Foreword by Hanson W. Baldwin. Afterword by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Slessor. THE SKY ON FIRE: THE FIRST BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1917-1918 AND THE BIRTH OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.
Smithsonian, Washington, D.C., 1991, reprint.
289 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1560980168 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten a re the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources, (this book) explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air cam p a i g n i n history, including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to creat e th e Ro ya l A ir Force, the world's first independent air service, and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements, notably radar, it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in Wo rl dWa r II. "Charting the remarkable record of the 8th Air Force from its creation in 1942, through its fundamental role in taking the battle to Hitler 's Germany when it became the largest air unit ever committed to battle, to its departure from the United Kingdom after victory had been achieved, this comprehensive history explains the formation strategies and aircraft deployed and does so with e x tensive use of the reminiscences of veterans of 'The Eighth'. Historians are united in acknowledging the vital part played by the 8th Air Force in securing the Allied success and, as the heroic events of the conflict are commemorated half a ce n tu ry later, this book which first coined the admirable, and now universally accepted, prefix 'MIGHTY', returns to print to remain the finest tribute to the airmen who knew their task, undertook it with determination, and successfully completed i t. From The Royal Military College, Wartime Training Centres, through Sicily and Italy with the Eighth Army, and finally to Holland, Sydney Frost brings together a fascinating and absorbing story. THE GATECRASHERS., Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner.
407 Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner. THE GATECRASHERS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1984, first edition.
297 pp + postscript, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718123786 Map endpapers. "Horribly cramped, it lurched sickeningly while being towed and tended to be dripping wet inside. The X-craft midget submarine was hardly the obvious choice of vessel to pitch against the mighty battleship 'Tirpitz' in her Norwegian lair. Like pitching a tadpole against a whale; but in this case, the whale had a soft underbelly and the tadpole a pair of two-ton explosive stings like blisters on its sides. If the sub could survive its nightmarish 1,000-mile haul across the North Sea, Paul Everard would have his chance to gatecrash the fjords - past minefields, patrol craft, shore defences and steel nets - and cripple the ship which Churchi ll had called 'the Beast'. Even if he succeeded, the chances of escaping alive were slim. If he failed, Nick Everard, commanding Arctic convoy PQ19, was in for a pounding. None of his ships could hope to match the firepower of the 'Tirpit z ' o r p i erce her fifteen-inch armour. As 'The Gatecrashers' draws to its thunderous climax, father and son, their lives balancing on a knife-edge, face their final, most searching test. 'The Gatecrashers' is based on the true story of Operat io n S ou rc e : si x X-craft crossed the North Sea in September 1943 to attack the 'Tirpitz, Scharnhorst' and 'Lutzow' in Altenfjord, where they were kept out of bomber range behind formidable defences. Although (this book) stands on its own as a nov el , it is al so th e ninth and last in the Everard series of naval adventures, which started with Nick as a somewhat bloody-minded midshipman at Jutland in 1916. Although fictional, the setting of each story is historically and technically ac cura te. Cap tai n J .E. Moo re, Editor of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', had written: 'I have not found this splendid authenticity in any naval fiction since C.S. Forester's heyday'." Faint cigarette odor. Oxford University Press, New York, 1989.
330 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0195037979 B&w photographs. "(H)ere Fussell examines the immediate impact of the war on common soldiers and civilians. He describes the psychological and emotional atmosphere of World War II. He analyzes the wishful thinking and the euphemisms people needed to deal with unacceptable reality (the early belief, for instance, that the war could be won with 'precision bombing', that is, by long distance); he describes the ab n o r m a l l y intense frustration of desire and some of the means by which desire was satisfied; and, most important, he emphasizes the damage the war did to intellect, discrimination, honesty, individuality, complexity, ambiguity and wit. Of cou rs e, n o Fu ss el l book would be complete without some serious discussion of the literature of the time. He examines, for instance, how the great privations of wartime (when oranges would be raffled off as valued prizes) resulted in roccoco pros e s tyl es th at dwe lt longingly on lavish dinners, and how the 'high-mindedness' of the era and the almost pathological need to 'accentuate the positive' invited the downfall of the acerbic H.L. Mencken and the ascent of E.B. White." Light wrinkl ing at b ott om of spin e. BLACK MAY., Gannon, Michael.
415 Gannon, Michael. BLACK MAY.
HarperCollins, New York, 1998, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060178191 B&w photographs. "In May 1943, Allied sea and air forces won a stunning, dramatic, and vital victory over the largest and most powerful submarine force ever sent to sea, sin king forty-one German U-boats and damaging thirty-seven others. It was the forty-fifth month of World War II, and by the end of May the Germans were forced to acknowledge defeat and recall almost all of their remaining U-boats from the major t r a f f i c lanes of the North Atlantic. At U-Boat Headquarters in Berlin, despondent naval officers spoke of 'Black May'. It was a defeat from which the German U-boat fleet never recovered. 'Black May' is a triumph of scholarship and narrativ e , an i mp or ta nt work of history, and a great sea story. (The author) has done enormous research and produced the most thoroughly documented study ever done of these battles. In his compelling historical saga, the people are as significant as t he te chn ica l i nfo rmation. Given the strategic importance of the events of May 1943, it is natural to ask, How did Black may happen and why? Who or what was responsible? Were new Allied tactics adopted or new weapons employed? This book ans wer s th ose ques tion s an d many others. Drawing on original documents in German, British, U.S., and Canadian archives, as well as interviews with surviving participants, Gannon describes the exciting sea and air battles, frequently taking th e re ader insi de t he U- boats them selves, aboard British warshps, onto the decks of torpedoed merchant ships, and into the cockpits of British and U.S. aircraft. Throughout, Gannon tells the Black May story from both the German and Allied pers pecti ves, often using the a ctual words of captains and crew. Finally he allows the reader to 'listen in' on secretly recorded conversations of captured U-boat men in POW quarters during the same incredible month, giving intimate and moving acces s to t he th oughts and e motions of se amen t hat is unparalleled in naval literature." University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center, Regina, Saskatchewan, 2004.
197 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 088977157X B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1 940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will r e a d a l l about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife , Vi ol et , f ou nd the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. A ubi n L e C au f o n s eve r al occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for the ir g rave s. Joh n Ed win Ga rdiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, a nd m ost t ouchi ng, h owe ver, is th e ge nui ne family affection that pervades these letters." Fine

KAISER BILL., Garrett, Richard.
420 Garrett, Richard. KAISER BILL.
Wayland, (Hove, 1978), first edition.
96 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, map. "Commonly blamed as the man who started World War I, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany is often seen as a tough aggressor; a man, as Bismarck might have said, 'of blood and iron'. As leader of the world's strongest army, he wielded great power. When, at the beginning of this century, he built up an almost equally strong navy, it seemed as if nothing could stop Germany's advances. But was he really the strong man of popular legend? Richard Garrett argues that, behind the stern appearance and the flamboyant moustache, Kaiser Bill was a failure. He believed that God had appointed him Emperor of Germany and that God would tell him what to do. His talent for making enemies was enormous. He had grown up as a spoilt child with a wide knowledge of many things and a deep understanding of almost nothing; and yet his arrogant faith in himself never faltered. This is the story of the effect of one man on thirty years of world history, culminating in a monstrous clash of arms and ending in the quietness of exile. Out of the story a picture of the real man emerges, and the events which led up to the disaster are put in to their true perspective. Was it the Kaiser, more than anyone else, who unwittingly prepared the way for Hitler? This book may suggest an answer." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, very light browning, small corner crease on front flap. VG+/VG
