COCKNEY DING DONG., Keeping, Charles.
42 Keeping, Charles. COCKNEY DING DONG.
Kestrel Books / EMI Music Publishing, Harmondsworth / London, 1975.
190 pp, 4to (11" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0722650612 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with Charles Keepings wonderful drawings of London and Londoners of the past. "Charles Keeping, one of Britain's finest illustrators, was brou ght up in Vauxhall, South London, where a Saturday-night sing song (or 'ding dong', as it was called) was part of the way of life. Over many years, including the height of the Blitz, these sing songs scarcely varied in style or content. A r m e d w i t h plenty of beer and food, the family gathered in the parlour to sing and dance to their favourite songs, each member of the family being expected to sing the song that 'belonged' to him. Charles Keeping has now brought together and l ov in gl y i ll us tr ated many of these songs. They come from a variety of sources: from Edwardian music hall, from the First World War trenches, from the American dance hall, or, quite simply, from the streets. And they take in a complete ra nge of mo ods , fro m t he sen timental 'My Old Dutch' to the favourite Cockeny dance song, 'Knees Up Mother Brown'. Musical notation, for guitar and piano, and full lyrics are given for each song. But this is a book to treasure as much as to us e - Char les Keep in g's deli ght ful illustrations, whether they are portraying characters from the songs or members of the family singing, help to capture a part of Cockney life that is fast disappearing." Previous owner's small stamp on front pa sted own; a se ries of tiny hole s fr om t o to bottom on pages 81 to 88 - also a small area of creases on these pages and an area of ink smudging on page 88 - probably caused by printing/maunfacturing process; book lightly cocked; two tiny corner bumps . Du st ja cket has very light wrin kling at top of spine and flap-folds. Very Good-/Very Good

256 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "This volume, published to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Shepard, offers the best and most characteristic of his whole range of work; it also provides a balanced appreciation of the man as artist and companion. Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here." 207 pp, 11 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "William Steig, the dean of 'New Yorker' cartoonists, began his career at the magazine in 1930. After achieving acclaim with his gang of street urchins, affectionately nicknamed the 'Small Fry', Steig branched out, exploring through his drawings the psychological undercurrents in relationships between parent and child, husband and wife, self and society. Beginning in the sixties, Steig demonstrated his understanding and awe of children in numerous award-winning picture books, including such classics as: 'Rotten Island' (1969), 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble' (1970 Caldecott Medal), 'Dominic' (1972), 'Gorky Rises' (1980), 'Doctor De Soto' (1982 Newbery Award), and 'Shrek!' (1990). Featuring hundreds of illustrations, including a portfolio of previously unpublished pieces selected by the artists himself, (this book) celebrates the life work of an uncompromising iconoclast who has never lost sight of the power of humor." DR. SEUSS. TWAYNE'S UNITED STATES AUTHORS SERIES - CHILDREN'S LITERATURE., MacDonald, Ruth K. (Dr. Seuss / Theodore Geisel.)

Boston Twayne 1988 0805775242 / 9780805775242 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
186 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he first full-length critical examination of this acclaimed author/illustrator's work. In her thoughtful, concise study, Ruth K. MacDonald argues that Dr. Seuss has earned his place as the most popular author/illustrator for children in America because of his unique ability to write stories of high quality while working within the restrictive format of the easy reader, a story told in simple words and sentences that maintains the interest of children just learning to read. MacDonald believes that Dr. Seuss's work, which has until now remained largely ignored as literature because of its mass appeal, not only celebrates the particularly American trait of individuality, but also challenges the limits and conventions of children's literature. In her chronological survey of his work and her investigation of his influence upon other authors and illustrators, MacDonald shows that it is his genius, not clever marketing techniques, that has led to Dr. Seuss's marvelous and longstanding popularity - a chronology, and selected bibliography are included." Area of light soiling on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. 60 Poortvliet, Rien. Calligraphy by Diane Lynch. IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE.
Harry N. Abrams, New York, 1988, first American edition.
240 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0810911264 Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "(T)he fascinating saga, told with pen and brush, of a rural family in old Holland - the Poortvliets - going back ten generations to Cornelis Adriaensz, who died in 1649. Characteristically evocative, Poortvliet's work is remarkable in its ability to touch us. With equal skill he conveys the coziness of a comfortable house set in a bleak and brooding snowy landsc ape and the light-hearted revelry of a winter carnival. (This book) does not conjure up a romantic vision of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills. There was hardship and hard work, like that of the young cowherd se e n h ere - an eight-year-old boy whose long and lonely day began at four o'clock in the morning and only ended when he returned home at six o'clock in the evening. We learn of the many Dutch families in the early days who endured the deaths of fi ve , t en , or more babies, and of their joy in those that survived. We even learn of such nocturnal annoyances as the families of noisy mice that shared the straw mattresses of the country folk. (The author's) colorful heritage, traced back to th e 1 60 0s , w hile it does not include rich and famous people, does include characters and stories to rival those of a soap opera in their intricacy and human interest. Those accounts are based on ancient documents such as birth and death certifica tes and ch urch records, some of which are reproduced. Exploring his own roots, Poortvliet captures the beauty in the faces and in the lives of the country people of Holland as he illuminates their odyssey into modern times." Light edge wear wit h a few tiny dint s on edges of boards, previous owner's signed bookplate on freont free endpaper, minor rubbing on boards.
