ISBN 0804810095 Color plates, b&w engravings, maps (some fold-out) - collated. "As late as 1857, the vast territory of the Canadian northwest was unknown to all but a handful of fur traders. Yet the determination of the Hudson's Bay Company to maintain its enormous fur preserve was being challenged by the persistant advance of settlement. Anticipatin g t h e t e r m ination of the Company's license in 1859 and curious about the suitability of the territory for general settlement, both the Imperial and the Canadian governments commissioned expeditions in 1857 to explore and report on the area. A n I ri sh - bo rn a rm y officer, Captain John Palliser, headed the British expedition; the moving spirit of the Canadian party was Henry Youle Hind. Hind's energy and zeal for the project lead his expedition on a thorough exploration of the R ed Ri ver an d l at er, of th e A ssiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers as well. First hand observation of the success of even limited farming in these areas convinced Hind that the prairies were capable of absorbing many thousands of settlers and of pro vidi ng t hem wit h a good liv ing. He wrote enthusiastically of the potentialities of western agriculture, envisaging a transportation system, either wagon road or railroad, from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies that would enjoy the advan tag e of bein g fed by an a gric ultur al po pulat ion from one extremity to the other. Substantail parts of this work made their first appearance as parliamentary papers in 1857. Hind's optimistic reports outweighed the less enthusiastic findin gs o f Pal liser and ul tima tely influ enced the Im perial government to refuse the renewal of the Hudson's Bay Company's license two years later. Hind's 'Narrative', factual and objective, yet enlivened by incidents of personal experience, is fo remos t a do cument of ext raord inary visio n and foresig ht and remains today a minor classic." Previous owners small stamp on front pastedown, very light soiling and a few scattered tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, slight darkening to edges of boar ds. SLEIGHS: THE GENTLE TRANSPORTATION. (ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AS "THE SLEIGHS OF MY CHILDHOOD".), Italiano, Carlo.
51 Italiano, Carlo. SLEIGHS: THE GENTLE TRANSPORTATION. (ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AS "THE SLEIGHS OF MY CHILDHOOD".)
Tundra, Montreal, 1978.
Unpaginated, oblong (8 7/8" H x 10 5/16" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887761054 Beautifully illustrated in colour and b&w. "Montreal, Canada, was the sleigh center of the world in the 1920s and 1930s. No other city with so much snow was so wealthy or so dependent on sleighs for its daily life. Nowhere else could such variety and ingenuity in sleighmaking be found. Except for the sighseeing sleighs with their fur rugs and shiny paint - the only ones that exist today - none of these sleighs was used for pleasure. But what pleasurable sights and sounds they presented! Here then are the authentic sleights that Carlo Italiano watched, stole rides on and drew as a child. Borrowing from his sketchbooks and many happy memories, he has created a unique book: a work of art, an invaluable historical record and a memoir of a gentler past when the only street noises were shouts and sleighbells." The 23 colour paintings show a variety of commercial and other vehicles (baked beans sleigh, Fire Department sleighs, brewery sleigh, chip wagon, CNR freight sleigh, etc.) Small bump at top of front hinge, some light rubbing on front board, very light edge wear. Dust jacket has small bump at top of front hinge, light browning. Very Good/Very Good

52 James, William C. A FUR TRADER'S PHOTOGRAPHS: A.A. CHESTERFIELD IN THE DISTRICT OF UNGAVA, 1901-4.
Kingston McGill - Queen's University Press 1985 0773505938 / 9780773505933 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good- A.A. Chesterfield, photographer.
113 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 11" D). B&w photographs. "(P)resents the most significant images from a previously unresearched collection of early twentieth-century photographs. The photographer, A.A. Chesterfield, spent most of his working life as a professional photographer, a field in which he achiev-ed a national reputation. But between 1901 & 1904 he was employed as a fur trader with the Hudson's Bay Company, and his most significant camera work comes from this period. The only white man at the company's northernmost posts (Great Whale River and Fort George), he lived and worked with the Cree and Inuit. The photographs he took during this period are remarkable in their combination of technical skill, visual appeal, and documentary and historical significance. (He) recorded the effects of post life upon the Cree and Inuit, and showed how the white agents of the church and fur trade made use of native implements, clothing, and transportation. Recognizing the threat to native ways of life posed by the white man's advancing civilization, he photographed the native people's dress, their everyday activities, the details that define a culture. The text provides a detailed framework in which to understand the photographs. James describes Chesterfield's life, the region, the people he photo-graphed, the role of the Hudson's Bay Company, the documentary significance of the activities depict-ed in the photographs, and the relationship between these and other extant photos of that region and era." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

55 Jameson, Sheilagh S. With Nola B. Erickson. CHAUTAUQUA IN CANADA.
Calgary, Alberta Glenbow-Alberta Institute 1979 0919224075 / 9780919224070 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
161 pp, 9 3/8" H x 10 3/16" D. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Chautauqua brought education, inspiration, and entertainment to the people of Canada. They flocked to the brown tents - symbols of the movement - to hear noted lecturers, listen to good music, and see live theatre. To many in small towns across the prairies and in isolated areas it brought their only opportunity for a cultural experience; it brightened their lives by bringing a touch of drama, a glimpse of far away places and a sense of magic, and thus filled an important need in their lives. This book traces the history of its phenomenon in Canada. It touches on its beginnings in the United States and on the lives of its Canadian founders, John M. and Nola B. Erickson. The work of the Ericksons in developing Chautauqua, the activities of the many young people who assisted in operating the circuits, and the experiences of the talent who appeared on the platforms, are all a part of the story." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny edge tears archivally taped.

HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940., Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler.
59 Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler. HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1997.
287 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557503907 B&w photographs, maps. "During the summer of 1940, the world held its breath. The greatest operation in German military history thus far - an invasion of the British Isles - was Hitler's next logical step. After the rapid overthrow of France, Great Britain was the only opponent still left. In London, the invasion was considered absolutely inevitable. Joseph Kennedy, the American Ambassador, described an even darker scenario in his reports to Washington. He not only questioned the effectiveness of the military defence, but considered the island kingdom to be in such a state of decadence and decay that any moral resistance would collapse under a German a s s a u l t . All Britain was convinced that the Germans would come. They had nothing left with which to oppose the German panzers. In only five weeks the Germans had crushed France and expelled the BEF from Belgium. Now those panzers stood on t he C ha nn el c oast, waiting for the order to send them to England. But it was remarkably difficult for the German military leadership to come to a decision. Greatest haste appeared to be called for if the unique opportunity were to be seized a nd the wa r e nde d w ith a short campaign in England. The Kriegsmarine had already converted all available ship space for the transportation of troops and brought it to the Channel coast. By day and by night, German bomber and fighter formations fl ew i nto Engl and to b reak British resistance. The Luftwaffe was to create the primary condition for Operation 'Sea Lion' - gaining command of the air, without which a landing on the English coast was impossible. The fight developed into the 'Bat tle o f Br itain ', i n whi ch the very existence of Great Britain was at stake. If the German squadrons could not only gain the upper hand in the air battles, but also destroy the major ports and paralyse British aircaft industry, nothing mor e wou ld sta nd in the w ay of the i nvasion. Those events and the decision made during Britian's nightmare summer of 1940 receive a fresh and penetrating analysis in this book."
