UPSTATE DOWNSTATE: FOLK STORIES OF THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES., Jagendorf, M. Introduction by Henry W. Shoemaker.
41 Jagendorf, M. Introduction by Henry W. Shoemaker. UPSTATE DOWNSTATE: FOLK STORIES OF THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES.
New York Vanguard Press 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good- Howard Simon.
299 pp, 8vo (8 5/16" H). B&w drawings. "Here are stories overflowing with excitement and crammed with laughs - stories about enchanted fish, friendly giants, daring hunters, trained mosquitoes, evil pirates; stories about ordinary sailors and farmers and millers, and stories about characters from history; stories about people and stories about phantoms and ghosts. These stories come from the great states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, but they will be cherished - just as was 'New England Bean-Pot', Dr. Jagendorf's first collection of folk stories - by boys and girls from every state - yes, and by their parents, too. You get some idea of what a wonderful adventure this book provides from the titles of some of its fifty-seven stories: Mighty Mose, the Bowery B'hoy; The Tale of Anthony's Nose; The Phantom Painter in the Steeple; A New Way of Tamin' Wolves; Hi-Ho, the Mosquitoes of New Jersey!; Jonas and the Sturgeon; The Best Devil in the Land; The Fiddler of Fiddler's Bridge; Fiery-Tempered Jake; Fearless John and the Giant Monster; The Hex and the Oxen; A Trickster Tricks the Devil; Chug-Chug Along the O-h-i-o; The Haunted Mine; Cookus, Bopple, and Yeakle; The Spider on the Wall;, etc., etc." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, light browning to fore-edge of text block, minor browning on inside hinge gutters. Dust jacket is price clipped, has heavy fading to spine (lettering still very legible), light rubbing, very light soiling, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some tiny chips and small tears, a few tiny foxing marks on inside surface, protected in a mylar sleeve.

BE NOT FAR FROM ME: THE OLDEST LOVE STORY. LEGENDS FROM THE BIBLE., Kimmel, Eric A.
42 Kimmel, Eric A. BE NOT FAR FROM ME: THE OLDEST LOVE STORY. LEGENDS FROM THE BIBLE.
New York Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers 1998 0689810881 / 9780689810886 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine David Diaz
256 pp, 11" H. Colour illustrations. "This collection of stories reveals the tumultuous relationship between people and God that started four thousand years ago and continues to this day. It begins with Abraham - who was the first to believe in one God and therefore the first to receive His blessing - and spans over 1,500 years as it explores the lives of his descendants. We meet warriors who dole out God's justice, kings anointed by God, and prophets who preach God's word. We see awesome miracles made by God's hand and incredible accomplishments made in God's name. Master storyteller Eric Kimmel draws upon the Bible and the Midrash to create vivid portrayals of favorite heroes like David, Samson, Deborah, and Elijah and of lesser-known ones like Miriam, Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Their human frailties make the tales enduring and timeless, and Kimmel's modern language makes them accessible and riveting. More than just a collection of Bible stories, (this) is a though-provoking epic that brings past, present, and future together in the ongoing love story between God and humanity." Very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

A HISTORY OF DIDSBURY., Million, Ivor R. Foreword by Lady Simon of Wythenshawe.
50 Million, Ivor R. Foreword by Lady Simon of Wythenshawe. A HISTORY OF DIDSBURY.
Didsbury Civic Society / E. J. Morten, Didsbury, Manchester, 1969, reprint.
142 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "In this book the author presents the results of research he has made into the history of a more than usually interesting suburb of a great city (Manchester), based not so much on the work of earlier writers as on the inspection of original documents wherever they might have been. It was inevitable that a quest so detailed should have yielded a crop of original discoveries. How many people know that the artificial banks of the River Mersey date back to the thirteenth century; that armies of both Cavaliers and Roundheads mustered on the very land where Didsbury Library stands or that, in 1651, an army of invading Scots was routed on Didsbury Golf Course where many of them lie buried today? Mr. Million has taken nothing for granted and does not ask his readers to take anything on trust. His book is liberally provided with quotations from original sources, many of which have never previously been published. There ar e few districts in the country of which so comprehensive a history has been written." Gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, minor browning to edges of textblock, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. "(The) definitive account of a tragic and awe-inspiring story: the rise of the Zulu nation in southern Africa under the great ruler Shaka , and its fall under Cetshwayo in the Zulu War of 1879. For more than a century after the European landing at Capetown in the seventeenth century, the Boers had advanced unopposed into the vast interior of Africa. It was not until 1824 that E u r o p e ans came face to face with another expanding and imperial power, the Zulus - the most formidable nation in black Africa. That confrontation eventually culminated in a bitter war betwen the Zulu warriors and Victoria's British Army. It wa s th e la st despairing effort of Africans to stem the tide of white civilization. The result was a dramatic, legendary, and bloody defeat at Isandhlwana for the British; the aftermath was the defeat and fall of the remarkable Zulu nation." New Haven Yale University Press 1996 0300064527 / 9780300064520 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
396 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions, maps. "(R)e-creates the real experience of medieval warfare, examining how men of all ranks of society were recruited, how troops were fed, supplied and deployed, the development of new weapons, and the structures of military command. (The author) challenges many common assumptions about medieval warfare. He shows that medieval commanders were capable of far more sophisticated strategy than is usually assumed: spies were an important part of the machinery of war, and the destruction of crops and burning of villages were part of a deliberate plan to force a foe to negotiate, rather than an indication of lack of discipline. Sieges, often lengthy and expensive, were more prevalent than physical battles. And in actual engagement the mounted knight was never as dominant as is often supposed: even in the twelfth century, many battles were won by unmounted men. Written by a leading scholar of the period and rich with anecdote and illustrations, this book will appeal to anyone interested in the social history of war in the Middle Ages." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

CHRISTIAN NAMES IN LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORY., Redmonds, George.
58 Redmonds, George. CHRISTIAN NAMES IN LOCAL AND FAMILY HISTORY.
Kew, Richmond National Archives 2004 190336552X / 9781903365526 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
190 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, tables. "Surnames have long provided key links in historical research. This ground-breaking work shows that English christian names are also significant for those researching local communities and family history - and that they are a fascinating topic in their own right. Did you know, for instance, that the names Philip and Thomas were once used for girls? Or that there was a woman called Diot Coke in 1379? When George Redmonds became intrested in christian names, he found that information on his own name in dictionaries was contradicted by local records - and that the standard works' emphasis on etymology only give part of the story. Half a lifetime's research has convinced him that every christian name has a 'pedigree', which can be regional, local or even centred on one family. Here he explores the implications of this for both amateur and academic historians. Drawing on examples from Anne to Zaccheus, he covers a wealth of topics including the stabilisation of first names as surnames; the influence of individuals, parents, godparents and communities on naming; the popularity of names over the last 700 years; and more recent changes in naming practice. He challenges many published assumptions - and offers new insights into the customs and attitudes of our ancestors from the Middle Ages to the present day." Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of front panel.
