FOLLOW, FOLLOW., Glenday, Alice. Dust jacket art by Garth Tapper.
41 Glenday, Alice. Dust jacket art by Garth Tapper. FOLLOW, FOLLOW.
Collins / Auckland City Council, Auckland, 1973, first edition.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Winner of the $2,000 Auckland City Centennial Fiction Contest, 'Follow, Follow' must rank as one of the most impressive novels published in New Zealand since the war. In its delicate exploration of family relationships, its sensitive probing of the heart of a woman and its mature treatment of sex, it is the work of an imagination under strict artistic control....With subtlety and insight, Alice Glenday shows a hidden crime weighing upon a f amily and yet somehow being drawn into the texture of daily living. The artistry of (this book) is outstanding, with its deceptively placid opening contributing to the final effect, with believable characters who behave as in life rather t h a n i n f i ction, and with a New Zealand atmosphere of beach and cliff which is unobtrusively part of the entire fabric. Alice Glenday's story-telling gifts enable her to make this very moving novel a most successful fusion of a compulsive sto ry w it h d ee p a nd sympathetic human observation." Light browning on pages 36 & 37 due to laid-in old newspaper clipping, small bump to corners of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book slightly cocked, minor browning to edges of tex tbl ock . Du st jac ke t h as moderate edge wrinkling, several small tears - some with creases, several very small chips, light rubbing, minor soiling. Good/Good

FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES., Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers.
45 Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers. FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.
London Salamander 1997 086101944X / 9780861019441 Hard Cover Fine Very Good John Weal, Richard Caruana and Brian Knight.
207 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed, cunningly camouflaged, boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia, the markings of aircraft has become a science, and their decoration an art form. At times of tension, trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet, in peace and war, there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training, rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene, depicting more than 100 different aircraft types, from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado, in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations. Splendid use is made of finely detailed profile drawings, top and bottom, head-on and 'scrap' views, together with emblem and other detail enlargements, all in full-color and each extensively researched by the compilers and artists who have striven for accuracy and interest. Each first-class drawing is described, with identification of squadron, unit, theater and period, and often even the pilot's name and rank too! Recognized as a major landmark in aviation publishing, this volume will especially delight aircraft modelmakers and all enthusiasts of the dramatic history of warplanes." Dust jacket has moderate creasing at top of spine - very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds and at bottom of spine.

It contains eyewitness accounts, from family papers, of the Sino-French War, of the revolution of 1911 and of the emergence of Chiang Kai-shek." 2. A Mortal Flower - 413 pp, 1966 first edition. "(Covers) the decade from 1928 to 1938, when Chiang Kai-shek rose to power and Mao Tsetung in his mountain fastness gathered the spent remnants of an almost destroyed communist army and rebuilt it as a force. Birdless Summer - 347 pp, 1968 first edition, ISBN 224614711. "The events of Chinese history between 1938 and 1948 are vividly reconstructed (here). HITLER & GELI., Hayman, Ronald.
52 Hayman, Ronald. HITLER & GELI.
Bloomsbury, London, 1997, first edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0747527237 B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nine teen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a h o u s e in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could r e la x wi th his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was al way s dog ge d b y H itler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis...In 1931, aged twenty-t hree , Geli Ra ubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becom in g emo tion al... (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." 54 Hergesheimer, Joseph. THE PARTY DRESS.
Longmans, Green, Toronto, 1930.
343 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "After forty years, Nina Henry looked in her mirror and found there a stranger in place of herself. Her first Paris dress had transformed her from a respectable young matron into an almost i ndecently beautiful woman. If that's what a dress does to you, she told herself, it is all wrong. It's immoral....Her husband thought so, too. He said it had changed her - made her look like a French cocotte. And when that night she met C h a l k e E wing, vacationing from his Cuban sugar ranch, Nina knew that she actually had changed - become a stranger to herself. She realized, with complete surprise, that she had never really been in love before. But despite the change, Nina co ul d no t fa c e the situation. Possessed by the necessities of the present, she was bound by the romantic conventions of the past. Demanding all, she would sacrifice nothing. How far she is successful, and where she fails, is a dramatic record o f t he ne ed fo r co mpromise, which more than any other quality, has formed the thoughts and acts of most women." Seeking to escape the stultifying atmosphere of a small university town in Ontario, Juliet accompanies her husband David on a research sabbatical to southern India. There, the relentless swelter of life near the equator sei z e s t h e m in a timeless drift; they become part of the life process. And, divested of familiar defences, they are vulnerable and raw. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL., Huggett, Frank E.
58 Huggett, Frank E. SOUTH OF LISBON: WINTER TRAVELS IN SOUTHERN PORTUGAL.
Victor Gollancz, London, 1960, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Frank Hugget went to Portugal to see, to understand, and to interpret. He went first to the capital, Lisbon, and then journeyed down through the country to its most southerly province, Algarve....For several months he settled in the small town of Albufeira, and here, living with and getting to know the inhabitants, he explored and sought to isolate the national characteristics of the Portuguese....(From the beginning he became) conscious of the very endearing, if sometimes maddening, qualities of the Portuguese people - their politeness and charm, and a great kindness that comes before their own comfort, customs and conventions....He sees Portugal (in 1960) as a de sperately backward and impoverished land....He sees a society in which, as a corollary to poverty and caste, there is a fearful rigidity in the relationship between men and women. The frustrated lover, he says, might be the symbol of the P o r t u g u e s e - and since the passion of men is frustrated and can find its outlet only in marriage (which is manoeuvred and controlled by the matriarch and therefore conditioned by an older generation), the relationship between the sexes is ov er -i de al is ed , an d finally disappoints, sending the man back to his dreams and imprisoning the woman in the home. It is, he suggests, this frustrated idealism which lies at the root of that most national emotion, 'saudade', and inspires th e ' fad os' of Li sbo n a nd Co im bra....recalling the era of Portugal's greatness - when her seamen voyaged round the Cape (not then of 'good hope'), on to the far Indies and around the world, pioneering into the unknown with fantastic courage - Mr . Hu gget t fi nds the same gr eatn ess of spirit very much alive today: in, for instance, that unique complex of Portuguese feelings and attitudes known as 'loucura', which is 'more than vanity, more than bravery, more than recklessness, mor e tha n mad ness, alth ough it conta ins all t hese elements. It is a needlessly mad courage which tempts fate to destroy and introduces into some simple action a complicated danger'. Mr. Huggett analyses, in detail and with penetration, the na ture o f the Salaza r dict ators hip. ...the pro spect of an y revolutionary change of regime remains, in (the author's) opinion, remote. In addition to its value as a portrait of a little-known country and a really thoughful interpretation of its people , the book is also a very vivid and pe rsuas ive pi ece of writing: there are splendid descriptions of town and country, shore and sea." Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2000 0850527511 / 9780850527513 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
291 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w illustrations. "(E)xamines the often stormy relationships (of the generals and politicians of the Great War), portraying the decision-making process on both sides. Many of the individuals involved remain household names today over eighty years on: Douglas Haig, Ferdinand Foch, David Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. The results of their endeavours led to the now legendary carnage in Gallipoli, on the Somme, in the mud of Flanders and the frozen heights of the Alps. How did these great men conduct their relationships and decision-making? To answer this, the chapters range widely to look at the Home Front, the Western Front and America at war. They also deal with the role of royalty and sideshows such as Italy, where Britian and France came to the aid of faltering allies. In all of this, defeat or victory would be decided by the most forceful and dynamic leaders willing to listen to and accept the wisest counsel. (This book) brings together the works of distinguished authorities on this ever-fascinating period and adds significantly to our understanding of the often complex relationships at play." Minor browning to edges of textblock, two tiny edge tears with crease at top of page 139/140 - archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.
