Nor has the cost to the Allies been forgotten. Unpublished letter-books at Blenheim have been drawn upon to show Marlborough's care for the wounded and their nursing. They are the authentic voices of soldiers, sailors, and air crew; privates and generals; military doctors and nurses; heroic warriors and courageous prisoners of war; and their loved ones who wrote from home. This is some of the most powerful writing that Canadians have ever committed to the page." Small pen notation in margin of page 315, slight fading to bottom edge of spine.

ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION)., Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.)
45 Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.) ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION).
Leo Cooper, London, 1993, new, expanded and revised edition.
118 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523753 B&w photographs, maps. "The airborne troops who landed at Arnhem in September 1944 suffered appalling casualties in the course of the nine-day battle; of some 10,000 men who went into action, 1,400 were killed and more than 6,000 - about a thrid of them wounded - were captured. British accounts have almost invariably praised the Germans' humane treatment of these prisoners. Had the young Sergeant 'Lewis Haig' b e e n c a ptured, however, his fate would have been markedly different, for the Nazis would have reacted with characteristic savagery to a German of Jewish extraction fighting against them as a member of the elite Glider Pilot Regiment. But 'Hai g' - L ou i s Ha gen - was one of the few who got back, to write the first and, as is widely accepted, one of the very best personal accounts of the battle....Forty-five years after the battle, at a dinner party in Germany, the author found himsel f n ext to a ma n of about his own age, the former Major Winrich Behr who had been Adjutant to Field-Marshal Model during the Arnhem battle. The two men became friends. Louis Hagen's interest in the battle was rekindled and Behr told him his own sid e of the st ory , whi ch is included here. Here, too, are balanced assessments of the planning and strategy of the operation, of the remarkable German reaction to the airborne incursion, and of the reasons for its failure." "The Shilling Shockers came about in the great days of the Gothic novels, at around the turn of the nineteenth century, many of which were enormously long three-d eckers. In those days, before copyright existed, such titles....were plagiarised and abridged by hacks into what were known as 'Bluebooks', paper-covered pamphlets retailing at between 6d and 1s....when the supply of three-decker Gothic no v e l s r a n thin, a good trade was done in Bluebooks comprising original short stories in the macabre field. It is on these short stories that Peter Haining has largely drawn for this collection....The book has a general introduction which expl ai ns t he de ve lo p ment, success and eventual demise of the Bluebooks, and in addition each story is introduced with details of its provenance and other relevant information." "Transformed almost overnight from third mate on a tanker into a Royal Naval Reserve lieutenant, Murdoch Murray Magnusson found that with 1939 drawing to a close ne ither he nor the war itself seemed to be getting anywhere. But then a summons to London from Admiral Sir James Cockayne radically changed all that. The admiral wanted to know about Magnusson's knowledge of certain Scandinavian languages a n d a b o u t his apprenticeship in sail. The Navy needed information about German raiders and blockade runners operating in northern waters, and one of the places to get it was the neutral port of Narvik. Magnusson was to go there in a windjamm er : t he b ar qu e ' Oulu' which, furthermore, was to sail under false colours. On arrival, he was startled to find that 'Oulu' was not the only windjammer in the northern fjord. Soon he and the crew of the old sailing ship were to play a key ro le in t he his tor ic re sc ue of British prisoners from the notorious prison-ship 'Altmark', and then to plunge into the maelstrom of the German invasion of Norway...." Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. 164 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman was a remarkable man who had the good fortune to be born in an era when his particular talents were allowed to develop to the full. Just old enough to take part in the earliest days of aerial combat in the First World War, he was in uniform until well after the jet engine had taken command of the skies. His son John, who has edited his memoirs, makes clear that Sir Ronald was a typical Edwardian English Gentleman. This, he explains, is vital to the understanding of the man. The moral precepts of the Edwardian era remained with Sir Ronald throughout his life, and if some of them seem stiff and outdated in these more relaxed days, they certainly sustained him throughout a long and adventurous career. The book not only covers the most vital years in the development of the RAF in which Sir Ronald played a significant part but is also packed with drama at high level. Not many Englishmen, let alone future Air Marshals, were ever under sentence of death at the orders of Sir Winston Churchill himself. Sir Ronald has been well served by his editor. His son is never blinded by filial respect and, as he served in the Royal Air Force himself, he is familiar with the Service background. He is also qualified to explain what it was that made his father and the military men of that generation a unique band of Happy Warriors whose loyalty and service to the British Crown is already a fading memory." "Off-course after a failed mission over Frankfurt in 1941, Bobby Keefer and his best friend Jack Calder found themselves forced to bail out of their twin-engine Wellington over Southern Ireland. Much to their surprise, rather than being returned to their squadron in England, they were interned for having violated Ireland's neutral airspace. After an unusual interrogation at the hands of the Local Defence Force, the two Canadian flyers wre transferred to a makeshift prison camp in County Kidare - right next to a similar camp for German prisoners. There they found themselves subject to a surreal honour system that allowed them da ily parole away from their internment camp - free to golf, meet women, and drink beer - without supervision. This system forbid escape when they were on parole but bound them, as RAF officers, to attempt to do so upon their return to camp." Lt Gen. Richard O'Connor launched what amounted to a British 'Blitzkrieg'. In less than two months the British forces swept 500 miles along the coa s t o f N orth Africa. 7th Armoured Division raced across the desert to cut off the retreating Italians, and O'Connor's men destroyed nine Italian divisions, and took 130,000 prisoners. 58 Le Naour, Jean-Yves. Translated By Penny Allen. THE LIVING UNKNOWN SOLDIER: A STORY OF GRIEF AND THE GREAT WAR.
New York Metropolitan Books 2004 0805075224 / 9780805075229 First American Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
233 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "In February 1918, a derelict soldier was discovered wandering the railway station in Lyon, France. With no memory of his name or his past, no identifying possessions, marks, or documents, the soldier - given the name Anthelme Mangin - was sent to an asylum for the insane. When, after the Great War ended, the authorities placed the soldier's image in advertisements to locate his family, hundreds of 'relatives' claimed him - as their father or son, husband or brother who had failed to return from the front. Marshalling a vast array of original material, from letters and newspaper articles to accounts of battlefield deaths, hospital reports, and police files, (the author) meticulously re-creates the long-forgotten story of the single soldier who came to stand for a lost generation. With humane sympathy and the skill of a novelist, he recounts the twenty-year court battles waged by the families competing to take the amnesiac soldier home. In the process, he portrays not just the fate of one individual but the rank and file's experience in the trenches, as well as an entire nation's inconsolable grief at the loss of more than one million of its men. Dramatic, taut, and powerfully relevant to our own times, this heartrending history depicts the pain and turmoil of a society that, without bodies to bury, is caught between holding on and letting go." 998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Minor browning on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light fading to spine color, light edge wear, a few tiny edge tears - one with crease and taped, minor browning at edges.

"The seventeenth-century Civil War was a time of intrigues and divided loyalties in which, against her will, Rosamond Fane found herself taking part. Her own sympathies, like those of all the Fanes, were for the King, yet her guardian, Colonel Carewe, had just been appointed Commander of the Guard at St. James's Palace where the royal children were confined. The children were allowed to play with Rosamond and her cousins and she soon became a close friend of the unhappy Princess Elizabeth. Rosamond's loyalties were put to the test when her brother Henry arrived secretly in England with a plan to help the Duke of York to escape to the Continent - a plan in which Rosamond was required to play a leading part. Should she be disloyal to her uncle, who trusted her, or to the heir to the Throne? This was a question only Rosamond could answer - and her final decision was not an easy one."
