CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978., Lyons, F.S.L.
45 Lyons, F.S.L. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1979 0192224931 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Irish history has traditionally been interpreted primarily in political terms as the struggle of an emerging nation to shake itself free of seven hundred years of English domination. The events of the last decade in Northern Ireland have led many people to realise that the reality is more complex, but this has left them if anything more confused than they were before. The purpose of this book is to trace concisely the outline of four conflicting cultures which co-exist in Ireland north and south. To bring their conflict to a focus they have been examined mainly within a narrow historical framework, the period 1890-1939 (defined by the two symbolic dates of the fall of Parnell and the death of Yeats), though there are some necessary excursions into a remoter past, especially in relation to Ireland. The underlying theme of the book is that no political solution has been or will be successful without a proper understanding of the intricacies of this interlocking pattern of cultures - Gaelic, English, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Protestant. The book is in essence an attempt to provide the historical basis for such an understanding." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, a previous owner's name in ink and faint erased pencil marks on free front endpaper, very light liquid stain in top margin of page 19, minor edge wear, small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. 59 Oliver, Jane. NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.
London Collins 1939 Hard Cover Very Good - Good
541 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). Map endpapers. Historical fiction. "Everyone knows of the sufferings of the Covenanters, but fewer of their intolerance in power, their grudging reception of the young King Charles after his father's execution at Whitehall, and the galling discipline which made him, after his accession to the English throne, unwilling ever to visit Scotland or to tolerate Presbyterianism again. Against this background, Miss Oliver tells the story of three generations of a great Scottish family, the Humes of Polwarth, rising to play their part in the nation's affairs. Lady Polwarth, resolute Episcopalian, was broken by her disastrous passion for her young second husband, Lord Jedburgh. Her son Sir Patrick Hume defied her to become a Covenanter, but was happier in his lifelong love for his brave, plain wife, who followed him into exile, and came back in triumph with Dutch William after his not quite bloodless revolution. Violent, too, was the career of his famous daughter, Grisel, whose romantic marriage to George Baillie, son of the Covenanting martyr, brings to a sunlit close her family's part in a century's struggle for freedom of speech and thought and worship." Dust soiling to top of textblock, light wrinkling at top and bottom of spine, slight waviness to cloth on boards. Dust jacket has small tears and chips, browning to spine and some edges, light rubbing, moderate edge wrinkling, now in a removable mylar sleeve.

60 Oliver, Peter. G. HOWARD FERGUSON: ONTARIO TORY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802033466 / 9780802033468 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on free front endpaper, minor glue residue on endpapers, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.
