41 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

THE ANCIENT WISDOM. A QUEST FOR THE SOURCE OF MYSTIC KNOWLEDGE., Ashe, Geoffrey.
42 Ashe, Geoffrey. THE ANCIENT WISDOM. A QUEST FOR THE SOURCE OF MYSTIC KNOWLEDGE.
Macmillan, London, 1977, first edition.
232 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333198670 B&w illustrations. "Years of detailed research into Celtic and Arthurian history have brought Geoffrey Ashe face to face with wider mysteries and conundrums that go to the heart of human civilisation. This book is a quest for an original and universal knowledge - the Ancient Wisdom - nutured by priests, shamans and occultists, claimed by scientists and historians since earliest times. Dissatisfied with theories of l ost Atlantis or alien astronauts bequeathing our cultural heritage, Geoffrey Ashe is still convinced that the Ancient Wisdom is not just a legend. But what is it? Is it still at work? In the tradition of Robert Graves and his search for t h e W h i t e Goddess, he investigates the puzzles of ancient mythology and religions. From the magical lore of numbers he unearths the clue that leads from the world of the Middle East and the Mediterranean to the mountain fastnesses of Siberi a - an d d ev as ta ti ng confirmation of the Ancient Wisdom's existence." Minor browning to pages, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny scuffs on bottom of textblock, light browning and faint tiny foxing marks on top of textblo ck . Du st ja cke t h as bee n price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, two small tears archivally taped, minor rubbing, light to moderate browning on inside. PRO Publications, London, 1994.
189 pp, 4to (11 5/8" H), soft cover. ISBN1873162138 Color frontispiece, b&w illustrations. "For scholars of British diplomacy and international affairs, the records of the Foreign Office are an indispensible source. But the range of information and the sheer size of the records can be daunting to the first time user and to the increasing numbers of genealogists who attempt to trace individuals in the files of the diplomatic and consular correspondence. This book provides an introduction t o the records in all their variety and suggests appropriate classes to start with. It also examines the state papers foreign, the records of foreign policy which pre-date the modern Foreign Office records. These are more closely related to t h e l a t er papers than the dividing date of 1782 would suggest. This book also gives the would-be researcher practical guidance in using the registry systems created by the Foreign Office in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to locate sur vi vi ng pa p er s today." DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER., Atkin, Ronald.
47 Atkin, Ronald. DIEPPE 1942: THE JUBILEE DISASTER.
Macmillan, London, 1980, first edition.
306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333191870 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "At dawn on 19 August 1942, five thousand Allied soldiers landed at the French port of Dieppe in the first major test of the defence of the G erman-held coastline of Europe since Dunkirk. The codename given to the operation was 'Jubilee' and its aim was to capture Dieppe and the headlands which dominate the town, hold them for a few hours and provide the Allied war planners with t h e v i t a l information they needed about enemy preparedness for the Second Front demanded by the Russians to relieve their sorely-pressed armies in the East. In nine hours of carnage and horror 'Jubilee' became a disaster. A combination of ove r- ri g id p la nn ing, inadequate supporting firepower and - in the final hours before the raid - sheer bad luck, inflicted on the Allies one of their worst defeats in a war which was already going badly. British Commandos carried out the flank a tta cks a gai nst co ast al gun batteries which dominated the seaward approaches to Dieppe and one of these raids, led by Lord Lovat, was spectacularly successful. But the assault on the port itself and the beaches on either side of Dieppe, the t ask of t he Cana dian 2nd Div ision, was a disastrous and bloody failure....Ronald Atkin has pieced together the full story of that day at Dieppe from all sides - British, Canadian, German and French - and from sources which include official docu ment s and re ports and most graph ic of all, the reminiscences of the men of both sides who planned and fought in Operation 'Jubilee'. The result is a masterly account of one of the most extraordinary - and tragic - episodes of the Second World War." Mino r fi nger m ark o n fro nt fre e end paper, tiny fain stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing. Very Good+/V ery Go od

49 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
55 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

56 Bailey, Hilary. CASSANDRA, PRINCESS OF TROY.
Jonathan Cape, London, (1993), Ist edition.
325 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. Cassandra, having lived quietly on a farm for twenty years, begins to write her reminiscences of the past. It is a "tragic story, taken from one of the oldest and most famous tales ever told - the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. It begins with Helen's flight, with Paris of Troy, from her husband. It tells of how a Greek army crossed the sea to attack Troy and bring back Helen, of the fall of Troy and its terrible aftermath. In this wonderfully vivid historical novel the author imagines Cassandra, the Trojan prophetess, did not die as in the legend, but lived on in hiding for many years. As she begins to write, Cassandra believes she is free to tell her story, but it is not so - there are still secrets to be uncovered and her own tale has not ended...This marvellous and moving novel tells of the eternal forces of human life - about war and its consequences for men and women, about courage, feud(s), revenge and fated love." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, light rubbing. VG+/VG
