Fought with weapons of a sophistication beyond anything previously displayed in battle, against a ruthless dictator who se invastion of Kuwait had been universally condemned, it was a conflict waged with an unparalleled sense of international common purpose. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
43 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

44 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE., Bobrick, Benson.
47 Bobrick, Benson. THE MAKING OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 2001, first British edition.
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297607723 "(T)races the story across the Protestant-Catholic divide of the sixteenth century as the struggle to complete a vernacular Bible was fought among competeing factions. As ( the author) tells in his enthralling history it was the culmination of centuries of work by various translators and a committee of scholars who in 1604 were brought together to collaborate on what became known as the King James version. Their t r a n s lation - substantially based on the work of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and others - shaped English literature and speech for centuries giving us what have become such commonly used expressions as: 'labour of love', 'a thorn in the fle sh ', ' th e root of all evil', 'the fat of the land', 'the sweat of thy brow', 'to cast pearls before swine' and 'the shadow of death' among a host of others. (This book) shows the profound effect the English Bible had on law and society. By giv ing ev ery li terate person access to the sacred text it helped to foster the spirit of inquiry through reading and reflection. Once individuals were free to interpret the word of God according to the light of their own understanding, they began to q uest ion the authority of their inherited institutions, both religious and secular. This led to the reformation within the Church, the rise of constitutional government in England and ultimately the end of the divine right of kings. In Benson Bobr ick's vie w th e English Civil War was fought in the light (and shadow) of such ideas, culminating in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. 'The Making of the English Bible' is about a crucial epoch in the history of Christianity, about the Engli sh lan guage and s ociet y, and about a book that changed the course of human events." 427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." 532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. 436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(This) portrait of James Chalmers McRuer (1890-1985), one of Canada's most outstanding jurists, sets out to discover the character of the man who played a key role in the evolution of Canadian law. His career of more than fifty years included service on the Archambault Royal Commission on Penal Reform from 1936 to 1938. He was appointed judge on the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1944, chief justice of the Ontario High Court in 1945, and from 1964 to 1971 he was head of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Civil Rights. From 1964 to 1977 he was chairman and later vice-chairman of the Ontario Law Reform Commission. The driving spirit behind McRuer was his passion for justice, rising from his conviction that the justice system should serve the oppressed, regardless of their ability to pay. As a law reformer, McRuer saw a pressing need to adapt the law so that it could better serve all people in the changed conditions of the twentieth century. He possessed a sharp sensitivity to the often hidden injustices existing in an advanced industrial society and a bureaucratic state." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.
137 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Brigadier Humphrey Gore, who raised the 10th Dragoons in 1715, and General Sir David Dawney, Colonel in 1969, each had a son in the regiment, as also did many of t he Colonels between them, including King Edward VII, for such close family relationships at all levels were a feature in the Tenth, with the same names appearing generation after generation. Hence in a very intimate way the regiment has al w a y s b e e n 'Proud of Their Man'. The Tenth has also always been notable for the Cavalry Spirit, that elusive quality, which has nothing to do with horses, implying light-hearted dash and daring, pride in discipline combined with independence o f mi nd an d ju dg ement, the ability to assess odds quickly and take instant and correct decisions, enduring courage and leadership. It was noticeable before Warburg in 1760 in Major Davenport's letters. It was there before they became the Pr inc e of Wal e s's O wn Hus sars and the smartest regiment in the British Army. It was there at Waterloo, when they led the decisive charge of the day, and right down through the years and the campaigns it has always been evident. Whether in intr oduc in g p olo to Eng lan d, or d eveloping new tactics in battle, the Tenth was always in the lead. In the Boer War, when they exchanged gay uniforms for khaki, in the 14-18 War, when they fought amost entirely dismounted, in the 39-45 War, when they ha d co nver ted to t anks , a nd th rough every change of role since, these qualities remained unaltered, epitomised in the regimental saying 'Once a Tenth Hussar, always a Tenth Hussar', and in their pride as 'The Shiners', outshining all others ." 80 pp, oblong 8vo (8 7/16" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0862880505 Profusely illustrated with colour reproductions, b&w drawings. "Admirers of Don Breckon's unerring blend of a faultless eye for detail and an irresistible nosta lgia for the era of steam will need no prompting to acquire and treasure this beautifully produced book. It is all here: the shapely majesty of the locomotives (with the emphasis on the Great Western, but with all the Big Four well repres e n t e d ) , s e t in landscapes of a 'classical Constable calmness'; the stations, accurate in every evocative period detail; the hidden rituals of the engine shed; the porters, signalmen and passengers who were privileged to play their part in t hi s gl or io us p a no ra ma. The artist himself has provided the commentary, and Roger Malone has written an introduction full of delightful revelations of the life and work of a painter who, he says, 'reminds us of what we are missing in a worl d t ha t h as dis mis sed c har act er and individuality in favour of streamlined efficiency'." 310 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)rgues that Canada ought to be a second Switzerland, with a living standard actually higher than that of the U.S. But in fact it is embroiled in a tangle of regional and linguistic quarrels, mainipulated by both the Liberals and their Mulroney Tory imitators, and an elite in Ottawa that truly represents neither Anglophones nor Francophones. 'The Patriot Games' offers an unconventional view of Canada that will shatter many myths. Brimelow endorses the argument of Goldwin Smith's 1891 classic 'Canada and the Canadian Question' that our country is 'rich by nature, poor by policy'. He demonstrates that this is a direct consequence of fatally-flawed political institutions, which have created divisive polices like bilingualism and Canadian Nationalism. He shows that, paradoxically, English Canada is the dispossessed and colonized nation within a weakening Confederation. In a provocative portrait of the Trudeau era, he describes how the Liberals imposed an artificial bilingualism policy on an unsuspecting country, alienating the West and having little effect in Quebec. (This book) challenges us to come to terms with what being a Canadian means." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.

New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced.
