BATTLECRUISER., Reeman, Douglas. (a.k.a. Alexander Kent.)
41 Reeman, Douglas. (a.k.a. Alexander Kent.) BATTLECRUISER.
London Heinemann 1997 0434002917 / 9780434002917 2nd Printing Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Geoffrey Huband cover art.
275 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). "Conceived on paper as an invicible defence against enemy commerce raiders, the battlecruiser was hailed as a triumph. Romantically described as the fleet's greyhounds, these great ships, remarkable for their size and speed, were designed to outrun and outshoot any of their heavier opponents. But the Battle of Jutland exposed their fatal flaw, the weakness of their armour, which could be pierced by a single enemy shell. At the outbreak of World War II, only four of their class remain. In 1943, when Captain Guy Sherbrooke joins H.M.S. Reliant, he knows he may be her last captain. The battlecruisers Hood and Repulse, household names, have been destroyed. But Reliant is both legend and survivor, a lucky ship, and as Britain prepares to invade occupied Europe one of the last battlecruisers must enter the conflagration. And Sherbrooke, who commands her destiny, cannot alter the bitter truth: that for one of her ill-fated class there can be no half-measures. Only death or glory awaits H.M.S. Reliant." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
44 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1992 0195409361 / 9780195409369 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The third volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' reveals "Montgomery in mature mid-life, (as) her personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. (She) juggles the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family, appeals by her PEI clan for advice and assistance - everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. There are also triumphs and trials more closely related to her position as a best-selling author: growing fame, the successful midwifery of her new heroines 'Emily' and 'Marigold' and a more adult novel, 'The Blue Castle'; the struggle to allocate time for correspondence with publishers, fans, pen-friends - and actually to 'write'. We trace the happy conclusion of her lawsuits against an unscrupulous publisher, and the disappointing outcome of the tempest-in-a-teapot suit arising from a minor automobile accident. There are more personal worries: the Rev. Ewan Macdonald's envy of his wife's publishing and social success; the dark shadow cast by his recurrent attacks of religious melancholia; her concern lest their sons evince similar tendencies. In mid-decade, Ewan Macdonald accepts a call to Norval, Ontario and Montgomery leaves 'dear Leaskdale' with mixed feelings. In these years, LMM turns more and more to her journal to record insights and opinions not voiceable by 'the angel of the house', as well as the brief epiphanies of delight in nature's beauty that have always sustained her. Her journal is an important example of life-writing - writing in the autobiographical mode - by a complex, sensitive, successful, and suprisingly contemporary writer." Minor bumping/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered very tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing.

Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 802015301 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
344 pp, square (8 7/8" H x 8 7/8" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The nineteenth century opened in the flicker of tallow candles. It closed in the glare of Edison's electric lamp. Between those two events inventors and manufacturers developed a wonderful assortment of progressively more efficient lighting devices, burning a variety of fuels. Dr. Russell records with scientific attention to detail - backed up with more than 200 illustrations - how these lamps were made and used. His text is interspersed with accounts of his own experiments with the fuels and mechanisms of earlier generations. The discovery of kerosene is related in full, as is the invention of successively improved kerosene burners, lamps, and chimneys - a field up to now neglected by technological historians. Separate chapters deal with rushlights and candles; firelighting tools; pan lamps; and lamps fuelled with whale oil, lard, burning fluid, gas, and electricity. There is an extensive glossary." WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
48 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

50 Stewart-Wilson, Mary. Photographs by David Cripps. Foreword by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. THE ROYAL MEWS.
Bodley Head, London, 1991.
192 pp, oblong 8vo (8 11/16" H x 10 5/8" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370313453 Profusely illustrated in colour. "The Royal Mews behind Buckingham Palace is the department of the Royal Household responsible for the horse-drawn and motor travel arrangements of Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family. Its buildings form a hidden village of stables, workshops, homes, offices and garages, and the Mews community, despite modernisation, flourishes on customs and traditions that have been handed down over nine reigns. The Queen's regular use of horses and carriages has provided essential patronage for the skills of the craftsmen who also work there and are involved in their upkeep. The international media co v e r a g e t hat is given to many domestic and ceremonial occasions throughout the Royal year means that Her Majesty's carriages and cars are very much in the public eye. But whether seen on the streets, the television screen or the printed page, t he re i s li t tl e time for the spectator to absorb the wealth of historic detail that is on view in any royal procession. In their new book, Mary Stewart-Wilson and David Cripps present an unrivalled account of the carriages, horses, harness, li ver y a nd ca rs of th e Royal Mews. What they have done is to stop the procession to allow a closer look at two and a half centuries of regal splendour and service to the Crown." THE ART OF WAR: A NEW TRANSLATION., Sun Tzu. Translation, essays and commentary by the Denma Translation Group.
51 Sun Tzu. Translation, essays and commentary by the Denma Translation Group. THE ART OF WAR: A NEW TRANSLATION.
Shambhala, Boston, 2001, 4th printing.
250 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1570625522 "At the core of the ancient strategy manual known as 'The Art of War' is the understanding that conflict is an inescapable part of human life. Since, as Sun Tzu teaches, agg ression and response in kind can lead only to destruction, we must learn to work with conflict in a more profound and effective way. Crucial to this strategic vision is knowledge - especially self-knowledge - and a view of the whole that see k s t o b ring the conflicting views around to a larger perspective. This new and unusually faithful translation preseves the enigmatic quality of the original - allowing us to discover innumerable insights in its lines millenia after this oral t ra di t io n w as first set down. Line-by-line commentary and three extensive essays reveal the broader implications of Sun Tzu's teachings and how they can be applied to everyday circumstances. As a result, the classic's basic vocabulary takes o n n ew me ani ng . 'W ar' is any situation that demands hard choices about creation and destruction, life or death. The 'state' is the system in which we live - our household, our culture or society, or our own mind. 'Defense' ensures the integri ty o f o ur boun dar ie s an d allows life to flourish within them. And 'victory' lies in bringing others around to embracing a larger view - one that includes their own - without ever going to battle." POLTERGEIST! A STUDY IN DESTRUCTIVE HAUNTING., Wilson, Colin.
55 Wilson, Colin. POLTERGEIST! A STUDY IN DESTRUCTIVE HAUNTING.
London New English Library 1981 0450048802 / 9780450048807 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
382 pp, 8 3/4" H. "The Black Monk of Pontefract began disturbing the Pritchard family in 1966. Bangings in the night, objects flying across rooms, and a mysterious black-robed figure, whose appearances became more and more frequent. The police, the local MP and the vicar were all witness to the extraordinary happenings which continued to plague the household, and all attempts to exorcise the presence were met with mockery. In this definitive work (Colin Wilson) examines the recorded evidence of this and other famous poltergeists. Cases of hauntings have been recorded since ancient Greece and Rome. Poltergeist means 'banging ghost', because of their habit of making loud noises and throwing objects around. This book is not about Black Magic. But it is about the strange forces that surround us, and of which most of us are totally unaware. These forces may make us feel uncomfortable and may even terrify us, but there is not point in closing our eyes to them." Chapter headings: Professor Lombroso Investigates; Possession is Nine Points in the Law; Cases Ancient and Modern; The Black Monk of Pontefract; Fairies, Elementals and Dead Monks; The Black Magic Connection; Ghost Hunters and Ghost Seers; Speculations and Conclusions. A few very tiny light stains on title page, a 1"x3/4" area of surface paper loss at top corner of front pastedown - paper is glued to top corner of free front endpaper, small bump/wrinkle at bottom edge of pages 300 to 328, very small remainder mark on bottom of text block - migrates into bottom edge of some pages, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, very minor foxing on top of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning - mainly top edge and on spine, tiny dent on rear panel, very light rubbing.
