2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF), Bowyer, Michael J.F.
41 Bowyer, Michael J.F. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF)
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Book is Fine. Dust jacket is clean and bright.

42 Brayley, Martin. Series editor, Martin Windrow. THE BRITISH ARMY 1939-45 (1) NORTH-WEST EUROPE. OSPREY MEN-AT-ARMS SERIES 354. (I)
Oxford Osprey 2001 1841760528 / 9781841760520 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Colour Plates By Mike Chappell.
48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons." Interior - small ghost sticker mark at top inside corner of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - crease down front cover near spine.

BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
45 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

SOPWITH SNIPE. WINDSOCK DATAFILE 46., Bruce, J.M. Foreword by R.L. Rimell. Drawings by C.A. Owers.
48 Bruce, J.M. Foreword by R.L. Rimell. Drawings by C.A. Owers. SOPWITH SNIPE. WINDSOCK DATAFILE 46.
Albatros, Berkhamsted, 1994.
36 pp, 11 5/8" H, soft cover (stapled in wraps). ISBN 0948414618 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings/plans, colour profiles. "The Sopwith Snipe is firmly lodged in the minds of most WWI aeroplane enthusiasts due to the epic one-sided combat fought by Major William Barker on October 27 1918 in which he brought down four Fokker D.VIIs, an action that resulted in a well-earned Victoria Cross for the Canadian pilot. The Snipe had few other opportunities for glory; No .43 Squadron was the first unit to be equipped and made its first Snipe patrol on September 23 1918. Within five weeks nearly 100 Snipes were in France and No.208's Camels were in the process of being replaced by Snipes as the Armistice was dec l a r e d. In the immediate post-war period Snipes served with a dozen RAF Squadrons, 532 being recorded on charge by 1921, and the type soldiered on until 1928 when it was officially declared obsolete. Despite its necessarily limited role in the fi rs t ai r war the Snipe has been a popular choice for modellers and subject of at least two previous monographs and a nubmer of magazine articles. The 46th DATAFILE, however, offers the most comprehensive selection of illustrations on the type y et pub li she d in one volume and contains a great deal of information hitherto unrecorded." His aircraft was downed on April 8, 1943, on his tenth operational flight. He and his entire crew were captured. 54 Byrd, Richard Evelyn. Foreword by Rear Admiral William A. Moffett. SKYWARD: MAN'S MASTERY OF THE AIR AS SHOWN BY THE BRILLIANT FLIGHTS OF AMERICA'S LEADING AIR EXPLORER. HIS LIFE, HIS THRILLING ADVENTURES, HIS NORTH POLE AND TRANS-ATLANTIC FLIGHTS, TOGETHER WITH HIS PLANS FOR CONQUERING THE ANTARCTIC BY AIR.
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1928 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Poor
359 pp, 8 3/4" H. Bright blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board, top edge blue. Map endpapers, b&w photographs and photogravure frontispiece portrait of author (only the first printings contain this). "Almost since he could toddle Byrd has been an adventurer. At the age of twelve he travelled around the world alone. At Annapolis he was an athlete of note. In his seafaring years that followed he was cited twenty-one times, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. He went to England to help fly the ill-fated ZR-2 to America. He was assigned to the transatlantic flight of the Navy's NC boats in 1921. As flight leader with the National Geographical Arctic Expedition in 1923 he and his plane flew 6000 miles over the icy deserts of the north. On May 9th, 1926, he and Floyd Bennett circled the North Pole for the first time by air. In June, 1927, after forty-two terrible hours in the air he crossed the Atlantic from New York to France. Now the South Pole! With ships and scientists, planes and sledges, and his old pilot Bennett, he determines next winter to enter this facinating realm. Full of action and adventure as it is, Byrd's story does not fall into the class of simple biographical yarns. Using the stark reality of his recurring enterprises as a background he paints a splendid picture of man's struggle to conquer the air and of the grand victory of human ingenuity over gravity that has sprung in a brief span of twenty-five years from centuries of despairing effort. And finally, because Byrd is an idealist as well as a rugged explorer, he projects his flying aspirations into the future." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, light edge wear, slight fading to spine color, previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has large chips/tears, edge creasing/wrinkling, rubbing, creasing on front panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

In this book, from dawn to nightfall on June 18, 1815, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute, we follow each twist of the a ct io n i n tu rn from: The English point of view (by William Seymour)...The French point of view (by Jacques Champagne)...The German point of view (by Eberhard Kaulbach)...As the action unfolds, each country's writer gives his own view (plus the won der fu ll y imm edi ate voices of his countrymen who survived to write of their experience) of the day that called forth some of the most brilliant tactical maneuvering - and the bloodiest and fiercest fighting - in the history of warfare." This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
