THE HISTORY OF CANADA., McNaught, Kenneth.
42 McNaught, Kenneth. THE HISTORY OF CANADA.
New York Praeger 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
336 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps. "The history of Canada is the story of an ever expanding frontier and of the attempt to create a new nation in the face of enormous physical and human obstacles. (The author) follows this development from the very first probings of the tiny bands of explorers, missionaries, and 'coureurs de bois' that opened up 'New France'. He examines the great military struggles for control of the continent in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which played such a vital part in laying down the present political and racial divisions. (Later) Canadians faced the enormous problems of welding scattered communities into provinces and provinces into a self-governing federation. The political task of nation-building was itself closely bound up with the building of the railways and the exploitation of the country's vast resources. Professor McNaught analyzes these great economic and social changes, as well as the part Canada played in two world wars and the process by which the Dominion evolved a new role in international affairs and new relationships with both Britain and the United States. (Concludes) with a survey of postwar Canada, which emphasizes that the expansion of the human frontier and the problems of unity and nationhood remain part of the Canadian question." Two very tiny stains on the half-title page, very small soft bump at top corner of middle third of pages, faint scuff on top of text block, very light wrinkling at top of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

A CENTURY OF WESTERN ONTARIO: THE STORY OF LONDON, "THE FREE PRESS," AND WESTERN ONTARIO, 1849-1959., Miller, Orlo.
43 Miller, Orlo. A CENTURY OF WESTERN ONTARIO: THE STORY OF LONDON, "THE FREE PRESS," AND WESTERN ONTARIO, 1849-1959.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
289 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w plates. "(T)he story of Southwestern Ontario as reflected in the columns of 'The London Free Press' for the last hundred years. By its very nature a newspaper is a diary of the times, a mirror held to the contemporary scene in its various aspects - local, national and international. Orlo Miller, a former staff member of (the paper), having spent several years in research, here presents a lively and readable account of what has taken place in the last ten decades. Here is no collection of dry statistical data but rather real, living, flesh-and-blood people taking part in historic incidents as reavealed in the yellowed columns. The growth of London from a struggling backwoods village to the metropolis of the smiling countryside of Western Ontario and the parallel expansion of 'The London Free Press' from a tiny weekly, struggling for survival, to one of Canada's leading daily newspapers form the twin themes from which Orlo Miller has skilfully spun a single story." Light wrinkling and light fading (1/4") at bottom of spine, very light fading to spine color. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, small piece missing at top of spine, a few tiny and small edge chips, light rubbing/soiling, old tape at inside top/bottom edges, faint water stain at bottom of spine.

46 Oliver, Peter. G. HOWARD FERGUSON: ONTARIO TORY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802033466 / 9780802033468 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on free front endpaper, minor glue residue on endpapers, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light edge browning, one very small tear archivally taped some rubbing with color loss at bottom of spine.

DOWN THE ROAD NEVER TRAVELLED., Pellerin, Brigitte.
48 Pellerin, Brigitte. DOWN THE ROAD NEVER TRAVELLED.
Breakout Educational Network, Toronto, 2003, first edition.
138 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1550024221 "With a unique blend of candour and humour, (this book) chronicles the arduous journey Brigitte Pellerin and her fellow researchers undertook in their attempts to track a tax dollar through one government spending program. Imagine coming home one evening and announcing to your significant other that the only way to truly understand how government worked was to study it from the ground up - to literally look into the sewer lines, leaking water mains, pothole-ridden roads and collapsing bridges of Canadian cities. This was Pellerin's goal when she embarked on an investigation of the Canada Infrastructure Works Program (CIWP), a government initiative that promised to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure and create jobs for Canadians. The task, (she) believed, would be relatively easy: to determine whether the government did what it said it would under this program. How hard could that be? As it turned out, it was nearly impossible." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing. Near Fine

51 Ream, Peter T. THE FORT ON THE SASKATCHEWAN: A RESCOURCE BOOK ON FORT SASKATCHEWAN AND DISTRICT.
Fort Saskatchewan Self-published 1974 Second Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
591 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on half title page: "With best wishes, Peter T. Ream". Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/plans. "Starting with the area's first industry and ending with the great industrial boom of the mid-twentieth century, Peter Ream brings alive the history of one of the oldest settled areas of Alberta. (He) narrates the early Indian and fur trade activity near the mouth of the Sturgeon River - then known as Birch Hills - where the plentiful supplies of spruce and birch bark made possible the building of canoes for the long trip down the North Saskatchewan River to the Hudson Bay. It was here in the spring of 1755 that Anthony Henday camped - the first white man to penetrate into what is now the Province of Alberta. Forty years later, in 1795, a trading fort, known as Fort Augustus was established by the North-West Company and in the same year the Hudson's Bay Company built Edmonton House close by. The first settlement took place in 1872 with the arrival of Francois and Joseph Lamoureux followed in 1891 by a group of settlers from Austria and still later by the Parry Sound Colony from Ontario. The book continues through the events of early settlement and development to (the early 1970s). This is a resource book - fully documented and appendixed. The material has been thoroughly researched from such sources as the national and provincial archives, municipal records and the early records of the Oblate Fathers of St. Albert." Slight bump to top corner of pages, light edge wear, small bump to top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light rubbing, one small and one or two tiny tears archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling on rear panel.

56 Schofield, Victoria. KASHMIR IN THE CROSSFIRE.
London I.B. Tauris 1996 1860640362 / 9781860640360 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
354 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w maps. "Given the location of the state of Jammu and Kashmir on the borders of China and Central Asia, the isurgency in the valley threatens the stability of a region of great strategic importance, challenging the integrity of the Indian union and creating potentially disastrous tensions between India and Pakistan which may yet escalate into a greater regional conflict. (This book offers a) very readable, carefully documented but highly accessible account of the origins, development and implications of this contentious issue. Beginning with the early history of the independent kingdom of Kashmir, Schofield traces the origins of the modern state in the 19th century, including the controversial 'sale' by the British of a predominantly Muslim Kashmir to a Hindu ruler in 1846. She examines the implications for the people when in 1947 the Maharaja came to choose between joining Muslim Pakistan and secular, yet majority Hindu, India and shows why both neighbouring countries continue to argue over the status of Jammu and Kashmir which, according to recommendations passed by the UN, was to be determined by the will of the people. Drawing upon research in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, Pakistan, and a range of historical sources, Schofield analyses critically the actions of the key players who, throughout its history, have contributed to the current militarization of the valley. And with the help of numerous interviews she takes into account the hopes and fears of all the interested parties - who are themselves divided, not only by their linguistic and cultural traditions, but also in their objectives." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, remainder mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light edge wear, several small indentationd on front and rear panels, three small edge tears archivally taped, very light rubbing.

Toronto Lester & Orpen Dennys 1985 0886190908 / 9780886190903 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
206 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(A) dramatic, no-holds-barred account of the long political season from January 1983 to September 1984 - from the review of Joe Clark's leadership of the Progressive Conservatives, through the resignation of Pierre Trudeau, and two leadership conventions, to the stunning election of Brian Mulroney as Canada's Prime Minister - an event that meant the end of an era. (G)ives us frank, critical portraits of the major aspirants for the nation's highest office, from John Crosbie and Jean Chretien to JohnTurner and Ed Broadbent, as well as the man who ultimately emerged the victor, Brian Mulroney. Snider followed the candidates across the country as they battled for victory in both the Tory and Liberal campaigns. He was there through the landslide election of Tory September. He conducted interviews throughout, formal and informal, talking to the candidates, to the men and women working with them and to those who simply watched from the sidelines as events unfolded. And he pulls no punches in his description of the events and those players; he gives us behind-the-scenes stories and irreverent anecdotes that never appeared in the newspapers. Behind the political battles lies a society of changing values and conflicting ideas. (This) is a dramatic portrait of power and democracy in Canada." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

60 Wickenden, Dorothy. NOTHING DAUNTED: THE UNEXPECTED EDUCATION OF TWO SOCIETY GIRLS IN THE WEST.
New York Scribner 2011 1439176582 / 9781439176580 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
286 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "In the summer of 1916, Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood, close friends from childhood and graduates of Smith College, left home in Auburn, New York, for the wilds of northwestern Colorado. Bored by their society luncheons, charity work, and the effete young men who courted them, they learned that two teaching jobs were available in a remote mountaintop schoolhouse and applied - shocking their families and friends. They took the new railroad over the Continental Divide and made their way by spring wagon to the tiny settlement of Elkhead, where they lived with a family of homesteaders. They rode several miles to school each day on horseback, sometimes in blinding blizzards. Their students walked or skied on barrel staves, in tattered clothes and shoes tied together with string. The man who had lured them out west was Ferry Carpenter, a witty, idealistic, and occasionally outrageous young lawyer and cattle rancher. He had promised them the adventure of a lifetime and the most modern schoolhouse in Routt County; he hadn't let on that the teachers would be considered dazzling prospective brides for the locals. In their buoyant letters home, the two women captured the voices and stories of the pioneer women, the children, and the other memorable people they got to know. Nearly a hundred years later, the granddaughter of Dorothy Woodruff found the letters and began to reconstruct the women's journey. Enhancing the story with interviews with descendants, research about these vanished communities, and trips to the region, (she) creates an exhilarating saga about two intrepid young women and the 'settling up' of the West." Browning to bottom of text block - mainly near spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling and minor rubbing.
