Book-of-the-Month Club, New York, 1994.
431 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates, maps/battle plans. "Of all the days on all the fields where American soldiers have fought, the most terrible was September 17, 1862. The Civil War battle wa ged on that date at Antietam Creek, Maryland, took a human toll never exceeded on any day in our nation's history. The battle at Antietam was pivotal to the course of the war, yet the complete story of this climactic and bitter struggle has n e v e r b een told. In (this book, the author) draws on a wealth of newly discovered diaries, dispatches, and letters to recreate the vivid drama of Antietam - and drama it is, pitting high-stakes military gambler Robert E. Lee against George B. M cC le ll an , t he general with every soldierly quality but one, the will to fight. Sears's subject is not just generals and their tactics, however, it is also the emotions and experiences of the men in the ranks, and their stories emerge here wit h p owe rfu l a ut hen ticity." 45 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.

OVER LINCOLN'S SHOULDER: THE COMMITTEE ON THE CONDUCT OF THE WAR., Tap, Bruce.
48 Tap, Bruce. OVER LINCOLN'S SHOULDER: THE COMMITTEE ON THE CONDUCT OF THE WAR.
University Press of Kansas, Lawrence, 1998.
319 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0700608710 "Shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, Congress established the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War to investigate such matters as military contracts, trade wit h the enemy, treatment of the wounded, and the causes of Union defeat. But its greatest efforts were directed toward a more vigorous war effort - endorsing emancipation, the use of black soldiers, and the appointment of fighting generals - l e a d i n g President Lincoln to fear that this watchdog committee would become little more than an 'engine of agitation'. (It) generated controversy throughout the war, and its legacy sparks debate even today over whether it invigorated or hamper ed t he U ni on war effort. In the wake of both critical and sympathetic appraisals, Bruce Tap now offers the first history of the committee's activities, focusing on the nature of its power and influence on military policy in order to show conc lus ive ly wha t t he u ltimate impact really was. Tap presents solid evidence, including examples of contact between Congress and the military, to show that the committee produced little good and no small amount of harm. The committee's principal mem bers en tert aine d s im plistic notions about warfare that led to rash judgments about its conduct and because its goals were congruent with Republican ideology, its principal criterion in evaluating military leadership was adherence to antis laver y bel iefs . As a re sult , ( it) polarized Congress and the army, limited strategic options, demoralized the Union's top generals, and inflated the reputations of incompetent soldiers. As Tap demonstrates, it was in many ways a serious imp edimen t to t he wa r effo rt, du e not to its fanatacism or vindictiveness, as some historians have suggested, but rather to its members' total ignorance of military matters. (This book) is a revisionist account that corrects prevailing images of the re lations hip be tween R epublic an pol itic ans and the army during the Civil War. By examining the conflict between Congress's constitutional right to investigate and the impropiety of its actions, the book raises questions that are applica ble toda y about the abi lity of legislat ive bod ies t o function in areas where specialized knowledge is required." 50 Watson, W.P. Foreword by William A. Stewart. THE ROYAL: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AGRICULTURAL WINTER FAIR.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
192 pp, 10 1/8" H. Dark green cloth with gold lettering/decoration on spine. B&w photographs. "Here is the colourful history of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, from its extravagant opening in 1922 to 1967, when H.R.H. The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, presided over the opening during the Centennial year. W.P. Watson, Manager of the Royal since 1963, writes knowledgeably about the pre-Fair days, when across the country there were many more fall fairs and local displays of livestock and farm products than there are today. When Ontario breeders decided a competitive fair on a national and international level was necessary, both Hamilton and Toronto vied for the honours. W.A. Dryden, a Shorthorn breeder from Brooklin, finally cast the deciding ballot in Toronto's favour. Except during the War years, when the Fair building on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition was used for barracks, the Fair has been held annually in the fall of each year for eight days. Mr.Watson chronicles the growth in areas of competition - cattle, poultry, field crops, flower show, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, tropical fish, junior activities, the cat show, the international photographic competition and, of course, the Royal Horse Show." 382 pp, 8 3/4" H. "The Black Monk of Pontefract began disturbing the Pritchard family in 1966. Bangings in the night, objects flying across rooms, and a mysterious black-robed figure, whose appearances became more and more frequent. The police, the local MP and the vicar were all witness to the extraordinary happenings which continued to plague the household, and all attempts to exorcise the presence were met with mockery. In this definitive work (Colin Wilson) examines the recorded evidence of this and other famous poltergeists. Cases of hauntings have been recorded since ancient Greece and Rome. Poltergeist means 'banging ghost', because of their habit of making loud noises and throwing objects around. This book is not about Black Magic. But it is about the strange forces that surround us, and of which most of us are totally unaware. These forces may make us feel uncomfortable and may even terrify us, but there is not point in closing our eyes to them." Chapter headings: Professor Lombroso Investigates; Possession is Nine Points in the Law; Cases Ancient and Modern; The Black Monk of Pontefract; Fairies, Elementals and Dead Monks; The Black Magic Connection; Ghost Hunters and Ghost Seers; Speculations and Conclusions. 53 Wright, Mike. WHAT THEY DIDN'T TEACH YOU ABOUT THE 60s.
Presidio, Novato, CA, 2001.
360 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891417249 "It was the age of Aquarius. It was the Vietnam era. The Greensboro Four sat in and Martin and a few hundred thousand others marched on Washington. In Birmingham Bull Connor t urned out the dogs and turned on the fire hoses. Rock 'n' roll was definitely here to stay. The Beatles made their final American public appearance with the decade barely half past. Camelot died in Dallas. The Great Society foundered on t h e s h o a ls of the Tonkin Gulf. Free speech at Berkeley and not so free speech in Chicago. We didn't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore and then he won the presidency. Grass wasn't just mowed, it was smoked rolled up in sheets of Zig-Zag. L on g h ai r an d hard hats. The Mets lost more games in one season than any team in the history of baseball and won a World Series. Broadway Joe guaranteed a victory by his upstart Jets over Johnny Unitas's seemingly invincible Baltimore Colts (Y es, m y c hil d, on ce upon a time the Colts belonged to Baltimore) - and delivered. And I haven't even mentioned sex - the pill, summer of love, free love. (The author) tackles the decade in which America changed forever, for better or for wors e. The 60s wer e s o re cent that even if you are a part of the post-baby-boom generation and didn't live through them, you feel like you did. Yet, the 60s ended over thirty years ago. Upon close examination, memories of those halcyon days, whic h s eem so pi cture -per fect in our mind's eye, have acquired the patina, and dust, of history. (Wright) breathes life into our nation's history while spotlighting little-known events and 'rest of the story' details, and always with a fine e ye for the hum an ele ment."
