B-29 SUPERFORTRESS., Pimlott, John.
41 Pimlott, John. B-29 SUPERFORTRESS.
Bison, Greenwich, CT, 1983, reprint.
64 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. ISBN 0861241371 "The B-29 was a larger and more devastating weapon than even its predecessor and namesake, the B-17 Flying Fortress. Developed during World War II by Boeing, this American superbomber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War, when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and back to devastate the Home Isl ands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the Korean War with great effec t . T h e t echnical changes and use of this massive bomber is told brilliantly by John Pimlott of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Richly illustrated with color and monochrome photographs as well as color sideviews and a full color cutaway dr aw n b y Mi k e Badrocke, this book will be a valuable addition to the libary of aviation enthusiasts." A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION., Reid, Dennis.
42 Reid, Dennis. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

49 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

To start with, she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards, as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window', which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose', 'The Language of Flowers', 'Marigold Garden', 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', to name but a few. This biography, written by her friends M.H. Spielman and G.S. Layard, was published in 1905, just four years after her death. It tells the story of her life and relates the romantic circumstances of her great friendship with John Ruskin. It is required reading for all followers of Kate Greenaway and is accompaneid by over 50 colour illutrations by the artist as well as many black and white and line illustrations." Tribune Press, Sackville, N.B., 1961, first edition.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Fold-out map. SIGNED BY STANLEY ON TITLE PAGE. "On October 17, 1777 General John Burgoyne, 'Gentleman Johnny', surrendered to Horatio Gates's American army at Saratoga. It was the humiliat ing end of a campaign which promised, in the spring of 1777, to bring the Revolutionary War to an end. More than anything else, the defeat of Burgoyne ensured the success of the American rebellion. During the nineteenth century various c o n t e m p o r a r y accounts of Burgoyne's expedition were published; but the existence of still another account by a British officer, in the library of the United States Military Academy, was ignored. This account is now printed for the first ti me , th ro wi ng n ew l ig ht upon and adding new interest to the story of Burgoyne's ill-fated exploits of 1777. The publication of this journal has afforded the editor an opportunity of rewriting the Burgoyne story in a way which explains the f act or s b ehi nd the Br iti sh def eat and the American victory. He concludes that Burgoyne lost his campaign, not because of any basic weakness in the original plan or faulty handling of his men in battle, but because of a breakdown in the civil ian tra nspo rt s yst em. The re w ere , of course, other factors which Lt.-Col. Stanley brings out in his Introduction, but he regards the logistical factor as the most significant...." Vancouver University of British Columbia Press 1990 0774803487 / 9780774803489 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
436 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This collection includes 150 letters Emily Carr wrote to her friends Nan Cheney and Humphrey Toms and 100 other letters relating mainly to Emily Carr. The letters date from 1930 to 1945, the most prolific period in Carr's career as both painter and writer. In them she writes in colourful detail about her everyday activities, and discusses her painting - 'the biggest thing in my life'. There are outbursts of exasperation and anger as well as many indications of her caring, her warmth, her wisdom and her wit, and of her impatience with critics and poseurs; and they give insights into her various relationships with, among others, Lawren Harris, Ira Dilworth, Jack Shadbolt, Garnett Sedgewick, Dorothy Livesay, A.Y. Jackson, and Arthur Lismer. The correspondence between Cheney and Toms reveals how Carr was regarded at the time and attests to their mutual interest in the Vancouver art scene. As an active member Cheney relates gossip about the local art community, providing a very personal and often exceedingly critical view of the Vancouver art milieu of the time."
