Toronto Clarke, Irwin 1978 0772011818 / 9780772011817 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
470 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photoraphs. "Skidding tires. Jet engines. Stars. Improved packaging. Seaweed. Radar. Wheat rust. Atoms. All have been the objects of intensive research by Canadian scientists. We are scarcely aware of the effects of such scientific reseach and planning on our daily lives; yet their impact is incalculable. The National Research Council in Ottawa has been responsible not only for research conducted in its own laboratories, but also in universities and regional laboratories across the country. The history of the Council is enriched by strong personalities such as Dr. Henry Marshall Tory, its first President and early champion of federal research. It chronicles the frustration of bureaucratic haggling, and the battles for improved funding and facilities to carry on important projects. It is the dramatic account of wartime work for more effective weaponry, on gas masks, radar and atomic fission. And it details the equally significant, but less known work on wheat rust, the difficulties of construction in the Canadian environment and wind tunnel experiments to ensure aviation safety." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on front board, minor corner wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing on front panel.

46 Evans, D.S. DIGITAL DATA: THEIR DERIVATION AND REDUCTION FOR ANALYSIS AND PROCESS CONTROL.
London Hilger & Watts 1961 Hard Cover Very Good Good
82 pp, 7 1/2" H. B&w photographs, diagrams. "(Provides) an insight into the use of data-handling equipment. Development in the field of data handling is rapid and I have as far as possible chosen instruments and systems that are either in production or have been made in prototype form, but even they are likely to change in detail as techniques and improvements suggest themselves with use and experience. I have therefore given only enough detail to provide a basic understanding of the construction and use of the units and systems. Furthermore, I have limited the scope of this book to shaft-driven digital devices with which I have had most experience. There are of course many other basically similar developments, particularly in the U.S.A., and there are a variety of purely electronic analogue-to-digital converters. To describe these would be an enormous task and would probably be confusing to anyone attempting to grasp the principals of digital instrumentation for the first time." From the Preface. Contents: Incremental Scales; Digital Counting Devices; Direct Reading from Coded Scales; Ancillary Equipment; System Arrangements and Applications; Bibliography; Index. Slight yellowing of pastedowns near hinge, previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has a few tiny edge chips and one very small tear archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling - mainly on rear panel, very light browning on spine and flap-folds, rubbing/scuffing on spine - the word "Data" is partially erased.

New York Penguin 2011 159420229X / 9781594202292 4th Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wear and tiny tear at top of front flap-fold.

57 Gatland, Kenneth W. and Kunesch, Anthony Ma SPACE TRAVEL.
New York Philosophical Library 1953 Second Impression. Hard Cover Good Good J.W. Wood and R.A. Smith.
205 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Here, described with enthusiasm and authority, is not only the whole history of rocket development from the days of the first discovery of an explosive mixture before the birth of Christ, but also the latest information on the harnessing of the tremendous new propellants available today, which may soon make journeys into space a commonplace of human life. Both (authors) are technical experts in their own fields. While their working hours are concerned with terrestrial problems, their scientific curiosity and knowledge are also beamed into the outer reaches of the Ether. They have accordingly produced a series of blueprints for the construction of an artificial satellite freely revolving in its own orbit around the Earth, and for the great liners which will take off from it on their flashing journeys to starry destinations in our own solar system and even, perhaps, beyond. There are nearly 100 (illustrations): historical records of early experiments, magnificent modern photographs of the latest achievements, and in addition a series of exciting drawings, specially made for the book, of space stations and space ships, which not only fire the imagination, but are precise in every detail." Light to moderate edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 1" bump/creases at bottom edge of rear board, two tiny corner bumps. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge, one or two tiny edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing, minor soiling, very small bump to bottom edge of text block.

ISBN 1896522521 "On May 18th 1969 NASA launched the last in a series of daring test flights of the Apollo hardware. Apollo 10 would fo llow swiftly on the heels of the successful flight of Apollo 9. The goal was to send a second crew into deep space but this time with the fully equipped hardware that would be required for a lunar landing. Veteran astronauts Commander Tom Staff o r d and Lunar Module Pilot Gene Cernan were to fly tantalisingly close to the barren lunar surface - a mere eight nautical miles, while Command Module Pilot John Young would be required to conduct the first rendezvous in lunar orbit to ensure the s af e return of his crew mates. 'Apollo 10 The NASA Mission Reports' finally puts in one place four of the most important documents from this auspicious flight, The Apollo 10 Press Kit, The Apollo 10 Pre-Launch Mission Operation Report, The Apoll o 1 0 P os t Launch Mission Operation Report and The Apollo 10 Post Launch Mission Operation Report Supplement. For the interest of collectors, students or historians alike (this book) follows the final test flight of Apollo through a series of ast onis hing te chnological accomplishments including the accurate measurement of distortions in the moon's gravitational field which would finally pave the way for man's first landing on another world." Apogee, Burlington, Ontario, 2002.
312 pp, + CD ROM in pouch at rear, 10" H, soft cover. ISBN 1896522580 B&w and colour photographs, b&w maps, drawings/diagrams. "The landing site selected for the crew of Apollo 16 was in the lunar highland area of Descartes. NASA chose to send J ohn Young to command the fifth lunar landing mission. Young had as much or more flight experience than any other member of the astronaut corps. He had circumnavigated the moon on Apollo 10 and he had flown two Gemini missions. Young would late r g o on to be the first commander of the Space Shuttle. The Descartes landing site was chosen because it appeared to be of volcanic origin. If it was, it might reveal secrets about the origins of the Earth. For three days, Young and Duke embark ed on their rover, away from the Lunar Module 'Orion', through rugged landscapes, in search of the origins of our world. Meanwhile Ken Mattingly shot hundreds of photographs and probed the moon's magnetic field from the Command Module 'Casper'. Bac k on earth the political climate was beginning to turn against NASA and the remarkable risks and exploits undertaken by the crew of Apollo 16 went almost unnoticed by the American people. The three intrepid explorers and their spacecraft harv este d a we alth of new data about the Earth-Moon system in an almost flawless performance of skill and bravado. Compiled here are many important documents about the mission including the complete debriefing in the crew's own words." Interior - cl ean a nd tigh t with no previous ownership marks.
