111 pp, 10" H. B&w illustrations. "Books and documents are of immense value to historians as records of human achievement. Here is a book that, using step-by-step instruction with the aid of diagrams, provides all the information needed to combat such deterioration. Of particular interest are the techniques involving the repair and restoration of antiquarian books and the full details of up-to-date chemical treatments for the preservation of archives." "This volume, published to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Shepard, offers the best and most characteristic of his whole range of work; it also provides a balanced appreciation of the man as artist and companion. Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here." A HISTORY OF THE WRITINGS OF BEATRIX POTTER. INCLUDING UNPUBLISHED WORK., Linder, Leslie.
46 Linder, Leslie. A HISTORY OF THE WRITINGS OF BEATRIX POTTER. INCLUDING UNPUBLISHED WORK.
London Frederick Warne 1987 0723235627 / 9780723235620 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Beatrix Potter.
446 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w and colour illustrations. "In this detailed and authoritative book, Leslie Linder not only tells the tale behind the 'Tales' - the history of how each book in the famous 'Peter Rabbit' series began to be written - he also reveals a wealth of Beatrix Potter's writing which is not published in any other form elsewhere. Beatrix Potter's letters are featured here too. The correspondence between Frederick Warne and their best-selling author provides a fascinating commentary on the stories she wrote, and an insight into her character. She was very particular about her writing, often revising the same story until it was to her satisfaction; several of these versions are quoted, including the privately printed edition of 'The Tailor of Gloucester'. There are unpublished 'Appley Dapply' rhymes, plays and Beatrix Potter's text for the painting books. Lesser known books, 'Sister Anne', a surprisingly gruesome tale about Bluebeard, and 'The Tale of the Faithful Dove', and two delightful versions of 'Wag-by-Wall' are discussed. She occasionally wrote articles for newspapers, and one year she even tried her hand at politics. Fourteen pictures letters are also reproduced, amongst them the 'Peter Rabbit' picture letter to Noel Moore, which started it all. This new edition of Leslie Linder's classic work has been thoroughly revised to take account of the latest information and publishing history of Beatrix Potter's writings. An important feature is the new and interesting selection of illustrations in colour and b&w, which includes several items that have never been published before." Minor soiling to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, several tiny bumps on bottom edge of rear board, two page leaves with small crease at bottom corner. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling, small taped edge tear with creases, light browning at top edge of flaps.

207 pp, 11 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "William Steig, the dean of 'New Yorker' cartoonists, began his career at the magazine in 1930. After achieving acclaim with his gang of street urchins, affectionately nicknamed the 'Small Fry', Steig branched out, exploring through his drawings the psychological undercurrents in relationships between parent and child, husband and wife, self and society. Beginning in the sixties, Steig demonstrated his understanding and awe of children in numerous award-winning picture books, including such classics as: 'Rotten Island' (1969), 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble' (1970 Caldecott Medal), 'Dominic' (1972), 'Gorky Rises' (1980), 'Doctor De Soto' (1982 Newbery Award), and 'Shrek!' (1990). Featuring hundreds of illustrations, including a portfolio of previously unpublished pieces selected by the artists himself, (this book) celebrates the life work of an uncompromising iconoclast who has never lost sight of the power of humor." 50 Marciano, John Bemelmans. BEMELMANS: THE LIFE & ART OF MADELINE'S CREATOR.
New York Viking 1999 067088460X / 9780670884605 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Ludwig Bemelmans.
152 pp, 10 1/2" H x 10 1/4" D. Pictorial endpapers. Profusely illustrated throughout with photographs and reproductions of Bememelmans' work in colour and b&w. "Although Ludwig Bemelmans is best known for his Madeline books, his creative life extended far beyond the 'old house in Paris'. He was a novelist and nonfiction writer, as well as a regular contributor to 'The New Yorker', 'Vogue', 'Holiday', and 'Town & Country'. He also painted murals in the bar at the Carlyle Hotel that still bears his name. Throughout his life he was a celebrated bon vivant who experienced a rich variety of places, personalities, and professions. He even worked as a screenwriter for MGM, and planned to collaborate on a book with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Late in his life Bemelmans decided to pursue his lifelong desire to paint with oils. The stunning results of his efforts are showcased here in two painting sections - one featuring his Paris paintings, the other pictures of Manhattan and its environs from his exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Bemelmans' fascinating life story is told through letters, photographs, illustrations, paintings, sketches, and excerpts from both his published writings and his private journal, selected by his grandson, (the author), who has also written a running text to guide the reader through Bemelmans' own words and pictures. The narrative celebrates the high times, but also sheds light on some of the bleaker periods of Bemelemans' life and how these events influenced him and his art. The final part of the book explores his creative process while working on the Madeline sequels. This elegantly designed and lavishly illustrated book showcases Bemelmans' art and writing and illuminates the relationship between the man and his work." Light wear on bottom edge of book. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

"For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS., Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter.
58 Perkins, Maxwell. Edited by Bertha Perkins Frothingham, Louise Perkins King, and Ruth King Porter. FATHER TO DAUGHTER: THE FAMILY LETTERS OF MAXWELL PERKINS.
Kansas City Andews and McMeel 1995 0836204875 / 9780836204872 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Maxwell Perkins.
213 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w drawings by Maxwell Perkins, photographs. "Among book editors, none is quite so revered as Maxwell Perkins. During the years he worked in New York City's Charles Scribner's Sons, the legendary editor helped brilliant minds focus thoughts into literature, shaped manuscripts into classics, then championed writers into best-selling authors. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, and Marcia Davenport were only a few authors who had Perkins to thank for at least some of their success. Behind the scenes, however, this literary genius was a devoted father to five daughters - Bertha, Elizabeth, Louise, Jane, and Nancy. Because he wanted the girls to know and love the family homestead in Windsor, Vermont he sent them there every summer and corresponded with them daily. From thoughts about the people he met to reminiscences of favorite family vacations, Perkins provided a vivid presence in his daughters' lives, whether he was with them or not. In (this book), the touching correspondence Perkins created for his daughters has been gathered into a memento of a great man. It is obvious that Maxwell Perkins was more than just a noted editor - he was a man with a deep and abiding love for his family." Dust jacket has soft crease along top edge of rear flap.

THE BOOK ON THE BOOKSHELF., Petroski, Henry.
60 Petroski, Henry. THE BOOK ON THE BOOKSHELF.
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1999 0375406492 / 9780375406492 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
290 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "He has been called 'the poet laureate of technology' and a writer who is 'erudite, witty, thoughtful, and accessible'. Now Henry Petroski turns to the subject of books and bookshelves, and wonders whether it was inevitable that books would come to be arranged vertically as they are today on horizontal shelves. As we learn how the ancient scroll became the codex became the volume we are used to, we explore the ways in which the housing of books evolved. Petroski takes us into the pre-Gutenberg world, where books were so scarce they were chained to lecterns for security. He explains how the printing press not only changed the way books were made and shelved, but also increased their availability and transformed book readers into book owners and collectors. He shows us that for a time books were shelved with their spines 'in', and it was not until after the arrival of the modern bookcase that the spines faced 'out'. In delightful digressions, Petroski lets Seneca have his say on 'the evils of book collecting'; examines the famed collection of Samuel Pepys (only three thousand titles: old discarded to make room for new); and discusses bookselling, book buying, and book collecting through the centuries. Richly illustrated and wonderfully written, this is the ultimate book on the book: how it came to be and how we have come to keep it." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at bottom edge of rear board, tiny bump at bottom corner of boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
