MYTH, MAGIC, AND MYSTERY: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION., Hearn, Michael Patrick / Clark, Trinkett / Clark, H. Nichols B.
41 Hearn, Michael Patrick / Clark, Trinkett / Clark, H. Nichols B. MYTH, MAGIC, AND MYSTERY: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATION.
Boulder, Colorado Roberts Rinehart Publishers in cooperation with The Chrysler Museum of Art 1996 1570980799 / 9781570980794 Soft Cover Very Good
242 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "A stunning achievement, 'Myth, Magic, and Mystery' brings together the work of nearly every prominent children's book illustrator of the twentieth century. Developed for a nationwide, touring exhibition beginning at The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia in June 1996, this book stands alone as a portable encyclopedia of the 'masters' of the genre. Included here are the works of such popular illustrators as N.C. Wyeth, Chris Van Allsburg, Maurice Sendak, Dr. Seuss, Edward Gorey, Tomi Ungerer, and others; a special feature of the book is a complete 'alphabet' created from a selection of the classic ABC books by the likes of Richard Scarry and 'Curious George' creator H.A. Rey. (This) will be a volume to be treasured alongside the classics themselves, a book to be sought after for moments of quiet contemplation or recollections of sheer joy." 44 Hunt, Peter, editor. Associate editors: Dennis Butts, Ethel Heins, Margaret Kinnell, Tony Watkins. With Gillian Avery, Anne Scott MacLeod, Julia Briggs, Zena Sutherland, Peter Hollindale, Michael Stone, Roderick McGillis & Beth Gilderdale. CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1995 0192123203 / 9780192123206 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
378 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and color photographs and reproductions. "(T)races the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand from the very first printed books through to the present day. (This book) takes 'children's literature' to mean books designed for children as well as books for childhood, and so embraces everything from religious tracts to multi-media comics, from the 'classic' to the unashamedly popular. Written by leading experts, this survey shows that children's literature reflects how childhood has been defined, controlled, and appreciated at different times. It reveals how adults have explored questions of power, entertainment, sexuality, and equality through their writing for children, and demonstrates how the borders between what is adult and what children's fiction are routinely blurred. A series of chronological chapters charts the 'history' which begins in the sixteenth century with grammars and ABCs. We move from books of instruction through to fables and fantasies in the eighteenth century, from reward books and romance to school stories in the nineteenth, and on to comics, colour picture-books, and science fiction in (the twentieth century). Throughout the text, books, authors, illustrators, publishers, and children readers are discussed within their wider social, political, and economic environment. Richly illustrated in black and white and colour, and with a section on further reading, a full index, and a chronology which places books for children in their literary and political context, this is a fascinating study which will delight all readers, young and old." Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling; tiny dent on front hinge; slight fading to color on front panel, spine, top edge and flap-folds.

"This volume, published to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Shepard, offers the best and most characteristic of his whole range of work; it also provides a balanced appreciation of the man as artist and companion. Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here." A HISTORY OF THE WRITINGS OF BEATRIX POTTER. INCLUDING UNPUBLISHED WORK., Linder, Leslie.
51 Linder, Leslie. A HISTORY OF THE WRITINGS OF BEATRIX POTTER. INCLUDING UNPUBLISHED WORK.
London Frederick Warne 1987 0723235627 / 9780723235620 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Beatrix Potter.
446 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w and colour illustrations. "In this detailed and authoritative book, Leslie Linder not only tells the tale behind the 'Tales' - the history of how each book in the famous 'Peter Rabbit' series began to be written - he also reveals a wealth of Beatrix Potter's writing which is not published in any other form elsewhere. Beatrix Potter's letters are featured here too. The correspondence between Frederick Warne and their best-selling author provides a fascinating commentary on the stories she wrote, and an insight into her character. She was very particular about her writing, often revising the same story until it was to her satisfaction; several of these versions are quoted, including the privately printed edition of 'The Tailor of Gloucester'. There are unpublished 'Appley Dapply' rhymes, plays and Beatrix Potter's text for the painting books. Lesser known books, 'Sister Anne', a surprisingly gruesome tale about Bluebeard, and 'The Tale of the Faithful Dove', and two delightful versions of 'Wag-by-Wall' are discussed. She occasionally wrote articles for newspapers, and one year she even tried her hand at politics. Fourteen pictures letters are also reproduced, amongst them the 'Peter Rabbit' picture letter to Noel Moore, which started it all. This new edition of Leslie Linder's classic work has been thoroughly revised to take account of the latest information and publishing history of Beatrix Potter's writings. An important feature is the new and interesting selection of illustrations in colour and b&w, which includes several items that have never been published before." Minor soiling to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, several tiny bumps on bottom edge of rear board, two page leaves with small crease at bottom corner. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling, small taped edge tear with creases, light browning at top edge of flaps.

207 pp, 11 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "William Steig, the dean of 'New Yorker' cartoonists, began his career at the magazine in 1930. After achieving acclaim with his gang of street urchins, affectionately nicknamed the 'Small Fry', Steig branched out, exploring through his drawings the psychological undercurrents in relationships between parent and child, husband and wife, self and society. Beginning in the sixties, Steig demonstrated his understanding and awe of children in numerous award-winning picture books, including such classics as: 'Rotten Island' (1969), 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble' (1970 Caldecott Medal), 'Dominic' (1972), 'Gorky Rises' (1980), 'Doctor De Soto' (1982 Newbery Award), and 'Shrek!' (1990). Featuring hundreds of illustrations, including a portfolio of previously unpublished pieces selected by the artists himself, (this book) celebrates the life work of an uncompromising iconoclast who has never lost sight of the power of humor." 56 Marciano, John Bemelmans. BEMELMANS: THE LIFE & ART OF MADELINE'S CREATOR.
New York Viking 1999 067088460X / 9780670884605 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Ludwig Bemelmans.
152 pp, 10 1/2" H x 10 1/4" D. Pictorial endpapers. Profusely illustrated throughout with photographs and reproductions of Bememelmans' work in colour and b&w. "Although Ludwig Bemelmans is best known for his Madeline books, his creative life extended far beyond the 'old house in Paris'. He was a novelist and nonfiction writer, as well as a regular contributor to 'The New Yorker', 'Vogue', 'Holiday', and 'Town & Country'. He also painted murals in the bar at the Carlyle Hotel that still bears his name. Throughout his life he was a celebrated bon vivant who experienced a rich variety of places, personalities, and professions. He even worked as a screenwriter for MGM, and planned to collaborate on a book with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Late in his life Bemelmans decided to pursue his lifelong desire to paint with oils. The stunning results of his efforts are showcased here in two painting sections - one featuring his Paris paintings, the other pictures of Manhattan and its environs from his exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Bemelmans' fascinating life story is told through letters, photographs, illustrations, paintings, sketches, and excerpts from both his published writings and his private journal, selected by his grandson, (the author), who has also written a running text to guide the reader through Bemelmans' own words and pictures. The narrative celebrates the high times, but also sheds light on some of the bleaker periods of Bemelemans' life and how these events influenced him and his art. The final part of the book explores his creative process while working on the Madeline sequels. This elegantly designed and lavishly illustrated book showcases Bemelmans' art and writing and illuminates the relationship between the man and his work." Light wear on bottom edge of book. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

ROY VERNON SOWERS: A LIFE IN RARE BOOKS., Mason, Roger Burford. (Roy Vernon Sowers.)
57 Mason, Roger Burford. (Roy Vernon Sowers.) ROY VERNON SOWERS: A LIFE IN RARE BOOKS.
Toronto Subway Books 1997 0968166040 / 9780968166048 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
93 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). One of the trade edition of 950 copies. B&w illustrations. "A Canadian whose first shop, in the mid-1920s, was a mecca for Toronto collectors and writers, Sowers later settled in Southern California. There he dealt rarities to the emerging carriage trade and subsequently worked at the famous Huntington Library. Later still, he was a conspicuous book- and print-dealer at a succession of locations in San Francisco, where he also patronized and promoted the fine-press movement. Sowers, who died in 1970, spent his last years gathering books in Britain and Europe for resale through catalogues from his remote fruit farm in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His catalogues (he issued seventy-nine in all) were notable for more than the often extraordinary books they described so knowledgeably, from modern first editions (in the first years of his career) to titles in early medicine and the history of science (areas which Sowers helped to make fashionable). His catalogues were themselves collected for the grumpy erudition of their introductory essays, pieces which grew more curmudgeonly as Sowers aged. In a trade that reveres both learning and eccentricity, Roy Vernon Sowers was held in special regard." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean.

American favorites are also presented: how Howard Pyle created a school of American illustration that produced N.C. Wyeth, while W. W. Denslow offered a unique American fairytale in his illustrations for 'The Wizard of Oz'. The lively text examines the context in which these phenomena took place, including the growth of the publishing industry, the changing attitudes toward children during the Victorian era, and the subsequent invention of the the children's picture book." 227 pp, 12mo (7" H), red cloth spine with lettering/border in gold, cream paper-covered boards reproducing the illustration from the dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "For this, the second volume in Milestones in Children's Literature, Victor E. Neuburg has written an admirable study of the famous 'penny histories' or chapbooks which formed almost the entire reading matter of the poorer people in eighteenth-century England. At a time when children's literature had a strong religious and didactic basis, these little paperbound books, however crudely produced and illustrated, kept alive traditional tales of romance and adventure, and fed the imagination of young and old alike. Facsimiles of seven of the 'penny histories' are included in the present volume, and there is a detailed bibliography of source material." The chapbooks included in facsimile reproduction are: The History of Guy of Warwick; Fairy Stories; The Interesting Story of the Children in the Wood; An Elegy on the Death and Burial of Cock Robin; A Peep at the Various Nations of the World; Toads and Diamonds; The Rod. Includes a section on chapbooks in America. Tiny mark on verso of free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor edge wear.
