Boston Twayne 1988 0805775242 / 9780805775242 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
186 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he first full-length critical examination of this acclaimed author/illustrator's work. In her thoughtful, concise study, Ruth K. MacDonald argues that Dr. Seuss has earned his place as the most popular author/illustrator for children in America because of his unique ability to write stories of high quality while working within the restrictive format of the easy reader, a story told in simple words and sentences that maintains the interest of children just learning to read. MacDonald believes that Dr. Seuss's work, which has until now remained largely ignored as literature because of its mass appeal, not only celebrates the particularly American trait of individuality, but also challenges the limits and conventions of children's literature. In her chronological survey of his work and her investigation of his influence upon other authors and illustrators, MacDonald shows that it is his genius, not clever marketing techniques, that has led to Dr. Seuss's marvelous and longstanding popularity - a chronology, and selected bibliography are included." Area of light soiling on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

51 Maitz, Don, foreword. Introduction by Raymond E. Feist. Afterword by Janny Wurts. DREAMQUESTS: THE ART OF DON MAITZ.
Novato, California Underwood-Miller 1993 0887331750 / 9780887331756 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Don Maitz.
98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." Soft crease at top corner of first few pages, slight waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE TELLING LINE: ESSAYS ON FIFTEEN CONTEMPORARY BOOK ILLUSTRATORS., Martin, Douglas.
52 Martin, Douglas. THE TELLING LINE: ESSAYS ON FIFTEEN CONTEMPORARY BOOK ILLUSTRATORS.
London Julia MacRae Books 1989 0862033330 / 9780862033330 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Charles Keeping, Faith Jaques, Victor Ambrus, Nigel Lambourne, Brian Wildsmith, Shirley Hughes, John Lawrence, Jan Pienkowski, Helen Oxenbury, John Burningham, Raymond Briggs, Quentin Blake, Janet & Allan Ahlberg, Anthony Brown, Michael Foreman.
320 pp, 10 3/8" H. "The work of fifteen significant modern illustrators is assessed in depth in this major art book. Douglas Martin has talked with each of the artists included and much of the comment about background, influence and technique is quoted direct, giving the text a particular authority and relevance. There has been a tendency to see artists known mainly for their work in children's books in a certain light: Douglas Martin redresses that balance by regarding them first and foremost as artists, discussing every aspect of their work and its place in the development of contemporary illustration. The book is therefore fascinating on many levels, as much for the general reader as for the art historian or student of children's literature. It is spectacularly illustrated in colour and black-and-white, with generous examples of the work of each illustrator, a number of them previously unpublished from the artists' private collections. Each artist is the subject also of a complete bibliography in chronological order, which makes it possible to see at a glance the progress of an individual career." Light wear at corners and at top/bottom of spine, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny scuffs at bottom of rear flap-fold.
