London Frederick Warne 1987 0723235627 / 9780723235620 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Beatrix Potter.
446 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w and colour illustrations. "In this detailed and authoritative book, Leslie Linder not only tells the tale behind the 'Tales' - the history of how each book in the famous 'Peter Rabbit' series began to be written - he also reveals a wealth of Beatrix Potter's writing which is not published in any other form elsewhere. Beatrix Potter's letters are featured here too. The correspondence between Frederick Warne and their best-selling author provides a fascinating commentary on the stories she wrote, and an insight into her character. She was very particular about her writing, often revising the same story until it was to her satisfaction; several of these versions are quoted, including the privately printed edition of 'The Tailor of Gloucester'. There are unpublished 'Appley Dapply' rhymes, plays and Beatrix Potter's text for the painting books. Lesser known books, 'Sister Anne', a surprisingly gruesome tale about Bluebeard, and 'The Tale of the Faithful Dove', and two delightful versions of 'Wag-by-Wall' are discussed. She occasionally wrote articles for newspapers, and one year she even tried her hand at politics. Fourteen pictures letters are also reproduced, amongst them the 'Peter Rabbit' picture letter to Noel Moore, which started it all. This new edition of Leslie Linder's classic work has been thoroughly revised to take account of the latest information and publishing history of Beatrix Potter's writings. An important feature is the new and interesting selection of illustrations in colour and b&w, which includes several items that have never been published before." Minor soiling to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, several tiny bumps on bottom edge of rear board, two page leaves with small crease at bottom corner. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling, small taped edge tear with creases, light browning at top edge of flaps.

NORMAN LINDSAY'S BEARS., Lindsay, Norman. Selected by Keith Wingrove.
42 Lindsay, Norman. Selected by Keith Wingrove. NORMAN LINDSAY'S BEARS.
South Melbourne Macmillan Company of Australia 1978 0333251628 / 9780333251621 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Norman Lindsay
viii, 72 pp, 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w cartoons/drawings. "Long before Billy Bluegum (a koala bear) made his trek to fame in the pages of 'The Magic Pudding', readers of the 'Bulletin' and the 'Lone Hand' delighted in the activities of Lindsay's most popular bear. Through two tumultuous decades, Billy's adventures relfected the social and political turmoil of a country suffering the birth pains of nationhood and soon to be plunged into a world war. Society, marriage and divorce, elections, conscription and war, the races and Christmas - all are dealt with in Lindsay's inimitable style; his wry and witty captions add the final piquant touch. Lindsay's unique understanding and love of Australia's animals are nowhere more apparent than in his enchanting portrayal of Billy and his bush friends. All appear in this selection by Keith Wingrove - which includes both the first and last Billy Bluegum pictures drawn by Norman Lindsay. The drawings are at once a joy to the eye and an inexhaustible source of fun and laughter." Very light edge wear to boards - moderate on bottom edge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, light rubbing, tiny stain at bottom edge of front panel.

After achieving acclaim with his gang of street urchins, affectionately nicknamed the 'Small Fry', Steig branched out, exploring through his drawings the psychological undercurrents in relationships between parent and child, husband and wife, self and society. Beginning in the sixties, Steig demonstrated his understanding and awe of children in numerous award-winning picture books, including such classics as: 'Rotten Island' (1969), 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble' (1970 Caldecott Medal), 'Dominic' (1972), 'Gorky Rises' (1980), 'Doctor De Soto' (1982 Newbery Award), and 'Shrek!' 186 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "(T)he first full-length critical examination of this acclaimed author/illustrator's work. In her thoughtful, concise study, Ruth K. MacDonald argues that Dr. Seuss has earned his place as the most popular author/illustrator for children in America because of his unique ability to write stories of high quality while working within the restrictive format of the easy reader, a story told in simple words and sentences that maintains the interest of children just learning to read. MacDonald believes that Dr. Seuss's work, which has until now remained largely ignored as literature because of its mass appeal, not only celebrates the particularly American trait of individuality, but also challenges the limits and conventions of children's literature. In her chronological survey of his work and her investigation of his influence upon other authors and illustrators, MacDonald shows that it is his genius, not clever marketing techniques, that has led to Dr. Seuss's marvelous and longstanding popularity - a chronology, and selected bibliography are included." Area of light soiling on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor edge/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

46 Maitz, Don, foreword. Introduction by Raymond E. Feist. Afterword by Janny Wurts. DREAMQUESTS: THE ART OF DON MAITZ.
Novato, California Underwood-Miller 1993 0887331750 / 9780887331756 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Don Maitz.
98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." New York Viking 1999 067088460X / 9780670884605 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Ludwig Bemelmans.
152 pp, 10 1/2" H x 10 1/4" D. Pictorial endpapers. Profusely illustrated throughout with photographs and reproductions of Bememelmans' work in colour and b&w. "Although Ludwig Bemelmans is best known for his Madeline books, his creative life extended far beyond the 'old house in Paris'. He was a novelist and nonfiction writer, as well as a regular contributor to 'The New Yorker', 'Vogue', 'Holiday', and 'Town & Country'. He also painted murals in the bar at the Carlyle Hotel that still bears his name. Throughout his life he was a celebrated bon vivant who experienced a rich variety of places, personalities, and professions. He even worked as a screenwriter for MGM, and planned to collaborate on a book with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Late in his life Bemelmans decided to pursue his lifelong desire to paint with oils. The stunning results of his efforts are showcased here in two painting sections - one featuring his Paris paintings, the other pictures of Manhattan and its environs from his exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York. Bemelmans' fascinating life story is told through letters, photographs, illustrations, paintings, sketches, and excerpts from both his published writings and his private journal, selected by his grandson, (the author), who has also written a running text to guide the reader through Bemelmans' own words and pictures. The narrative celebrates the high times, but also sheds light on some of the bleaker periods of Bemelemans' life and how these events influenced him and his art. The final part of the book explores his creative process while working on the Madeline sequels. This elegantly designed and lavishly illustrated book showcases Bemelmans' art and writing and illuminates the relationship between the man and his work." Light wear on bottom edge of book. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

She describes the fascinating connections between Peter Pan, Arthur Rackham, and Edmund Dulac. American favorites are also presented: how Howard Pyle created a school of American illustration that produced N.C. Wyeth, while W. W. Denslow offered a unique American fairytale in his illustrations for 'The Wizard of Oz'. The lively text examines the context in which these phenomena took place, including the growth of the publishing industry, the changing attitudes toward children during the Victorian era, and the subsequent invention of the the children's picture book." 55 Retan, Walter and Risom, Ole. (Richard Scarry.) THE BUSY, BUSY WORLD OF RICHARD SCARRY.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1997 0810940000 / 9780810940000 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Richard Scarry.
159 pp, 4to (12" H). Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout in color and b&w with photographs and reproductions of Scarry's work. "In dozens of books, with hundreds and hundreds of illustrations, Scarry revealed to kids that the everyday world was a place that could be understood - and that learning was fun. Scarry's 'Best Word Book Ever', for example, puts names to everyday objects; 'Busy, Busy World' explores geography country by country; and 'What Do People Do All Day?' delivers exactly what the title promises. Such a man is worth knowing more about, and this first biography presents the debonair, humorous, charming figure that Scarry was. In words and pictures the book traces (his) life from his roots in Boston to a post-World War II art school training and a brief career in advertising. Bored with selling products, Scarry put himself forward as a children's book illustrator and began turning out pictures for other people's words. Soon, he himself was writing texts, and eventually he hit upon the magic touch that catapulted him to nearly universal popularity - a menagerie full of animal characters who behaved like humans, but with unfailing good humor and grace. Through the personalities of these often mischievous creatures - the ubiquitous Lowly Worm, Tinker and Tanker, Sergeant Murphy - whom children could identify with but not have to worry about, Scarry conceived a parade of books that parents and children alike could pore over for pictures or read time after time. Long before Waldo challenged young eyes to find him in picture books, Goldbug was hiding here and there on Scarry's pages. Learning more about the charm of those books and the genius of the man who created them will enlighten and delight any reader of this book." Small tear (archivally taped) at bottom edge of title page, very light wear and a few tiny dents at bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear, edge wrinkling, one small tear archivally taped, crease at top edge of front flap.

224 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "In over 40 illustrated books and in hundreds of magazine illustrations and covers Jessie Willcox Smith pictured a child that was without equal in reality - innocent, unblemished, never naughty, always perfect. Smith's touching, sensitive portraits of children at play won her the hearts of millions of Americans in the early part of (the 20th century), just as her works are once againt captivating collectors today. From 1918 to 1932 her illustrations decorated the covers of 'Good Housekeeping' magazine. Her charming illustrations for Charles Kingsley's 'The Water Babies', published in 1916, are a high point in American illustration, representative of the finest illustrative work of the decade. One of the most prolific students of Howard Pyle, the dean of American illustration, Smith was so financially successful during her career that her friends affectionately called her 'The Mint'. This volume looks carefully at the woman and her art, illustrating some of her most delightful pictures for such works as 'The Princess and the Goblin', 'A Child's Garden of Verses', 'The Water Babies', 'The Book of the Child', and others. A study of her cover and illustrative art for American magazines features her illustrations for 'The Ladies' Home Journal', 'Good Housekeeping', 'Scribner's Magazine', 'Century', 'Woman's Home Companion' and other important turn of the century publications. Her delightful ads for Proctor and Gamble and other firms, her charming portraits of Philadelphia's children, and her posters, Christmas cards, and other works help to round out this detailed study of her career. As an aid to collectors of Smith's work, this volume features four important appendixes which give detailed listings of her illustrated books, magazine covers, illustrations, and posters." WALTER CRANE., Spencer, Isobel.
59 Spencer, Isobel. WALTER CRANE.
New York Macmillan 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Walter Crane.
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "More than any other artist of the time Walter Crane appears at the center of the great surge of interest in the decorative arts in the late nineteenth century. He was the driving force behind the Arts and Crafts movement, a children's book illustrator, designer of textiles, tiles, stained glass and ceramics, and a painter who enjoyed a reputation on the Continent as the most popular of the Pre-Raphaelites. Long before his name came to be associated with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott as the outstanding artists for the nursery, his brightly colored series of Toy Books ensured him a wide reputation. His fame led to commissions for nursery wallpaper, and from there to fabrics, ceramics, mosaic, stained glass, and gesso relief. As President of the Art Workers' Guild Exhibition Society he was a more strenuous advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement than his friend, William Morris, and traveled abroad with his work, specifically helping the formation of an American Arts and Crafts movement. Crane's early paintings embody the romantic medievalism of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, but he soon used poetry and painting as a means to express his growing interest in new philosophical ideas. Ultimately he was converted to socialism - a cause he embraced wholeheartedly, becoming a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the Fabians, and Morris's Socialist League. He gladly made his art servant to his beliefs, producing political cartoons and trade union banners. This is the first major study of Crane's life and work to be published since his death in 1915. Isobel Spencer, a past lecturer in the history of art at Glasgow College of Art, includes in her scholarly study of the man and his work the full range of Crane's many artistic activities." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corners of boards, tiny dent on bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at top inside edge.

LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER., Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.)
60 Taylor, Judy, collected and introduced by. (Beatrix Potter.) LETTERS TO CHILDREN FROM BEATRIX POTTER.
London Frederick Warne 1992 0723237778 / 9780723237778 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Beatrix Potter.
240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). "The chief recipients (of her letters) were the family of her former governess, Annie Moore. Beatrix wrote them long, lively 'picture letters', copiously illustrated with witty drawings and full of funny anecdotes about her pets and her holidays. As she became established as an author she continued to write to young relatives, members of her publisher's family and the enthusiastic fans who loved her books. Sometimes these letters take the form of a supposed correspondence between different animal characters from the Peter Rabbit stories, all written in miniature with their own tiny envelopes. It is a measure of the delight with which Beatrix Potter's letters were received and treasured that so many of them have survived to this day. The picture letters and miniature letters (in this book) are shown in facsimile and (it) is illustrated with photographs and Beatrix Potter's own drawings. Judy Taylor has introduced each section with an account of the children who received the letters, many of whose stories have never been told before. The result is an intriguing and attractive book that reveals much new information about Beatrix Potter and above all demonstrates her unfailing power to beguile children and adults alike." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny dents on bottom edge of boards, some areas of faint discoloration at bottom of boards. Dust jacket has some edge wrinkling, light edge wear, one small taped tear at top edge, light dampness stains at inside bottom edge, light rub marks.
