THE AIR BATTLE FOR MALTA: THE DIARIES OF A FIGHTER PILOT., Douglas-Hamilton, James. Introduction by Laddie Lucas.
301 Douglas-Hamilton, James. Introduction by Laddie Lucas. THE AIR BATTLE FOR MALTA: THE DIARIES OF A FIGHTER PILOT.
Wrens Park, n.p., 2000, reprint.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle, which was the second largest of the entire war, involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II, including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time, and their exploits, along with those of many others, are recorded here, a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." Minor bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine, 1" line of very tiny indentations on front panel. Near Fine/Very Good+

"(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at top/bottom of spine.

But Brehme is no ordinary flyer. He possesses the one-in-a-million combination of qualities that makes him the complete master of his profession - one of the top-scoring pilots of all time - a national hero, idolized, adored. Like so many of his contemporaries, however, Ernst Brehme knows infinitely more about the business of death than about life. Young and naive, he falls deeply in love with a French Jewess several years his senior. Their ill-starred romance is a central theme of this tense, totally gripping adventure..." McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." 320 Dunn, Laurence. MERCHANT SHIPS OF THE WORLD 1910-1929 IN COLOR.
New York Macmillan 1975 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Laurence Dunn.
215 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). "The period covered by (this) volume was one of spectacular development and dramatic contrast. The First World War brought to an end a period of intense competition - competition reflected in a rapid increase in the size of individual liners. Later, during the twenties, a more restrained style emerged, less lavishly appointed and more suited to a less-affluent world. The styles of these two eras, separated by the anonymous, camouflage-conscious years of the war, were quite distinct, the post-war years bringing in a range of new shapes and profiles in funnels and sterns." "A special feature is the 80 pages of color plates by the author, which supply a unique coverage of details such as liveries, funnel marks, and houseflags." Light waviness to edges of text block, light browning to edges of text pages. Dust jacket has light browning at edges, some very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few tiny dints on panels, two tiny perforations on front flap-fold, several small light liquid marks on bottom inside edge of front panel.
