282 Devins, Joseph H., Jr. THE VAAGSO RAID: THE COMMANDO ATTACK THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR II.
Chilton, Philadelphia, 1968.
222 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "In the dark, early morning hours of Saturday, December 27, 1941, a small force of British warships escorting two camouflaged excursion steamers slipped past a German lookou t station and sailed boldly into one of the great fjords of occupied Norway. Aboard the two steamers a tense group of British and Norwegian commandos rechecked their weapons and waited for the reaction of the nearby German coastal batteries . T h e t arget: Vaagso Island. Earlier thrusts by British raiding parties had deliberately avoided heavily defended sectors of the enemy coast. This was to be the first raid of the war on a fortified postion, a demonstration that the offensive sp i ri t wa s s trong in Britain despite the Nazi conquest of the Continent and the humiliation of Dunkerque. But the consequences of this sortie would reach far beyond the snow-covered mountains which reverberated that Saturday with the thud of ex pl o sio ns an d the snarl and rattle of sub-machine guns. The British gained vital experience in inter-service cooperation and information that would prove invaluable in subsequent raids on Dieppe and St. Nazaire. But in Berlin, Hitler was asto nis he d at th e da ri ng a nd apparent readiness of the British to hurl their forces into the teeth of a well prepared defense. As a result, he made decisions of major strategic importance. This is the story of a group of courageous men, of how they de velop ed a new typ e of fighting force, how they fought, how they died, and how they altered the course of the war." One tiny corner bump, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, two small light soiling marks at bott om of rear pas tedown , lig ht da mpne ss ma rks at top/bottom of front board. 283 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." (This book) gives a vivid account of the origins and growth of this impressive institution, which each year touches the lives of hundreds of thousands, from researchers to school classes thronging the galleries, to senior citizens involved in special programs. (The author) uses a biographical framework for the story of this exciting institution. First on the scene are the founders, such memorable figures as Sir Edmund Walker and Charles Trick Currelly. Then come the early directors, curators, and technicians, whose research and discoveries in every branch of the natural sciences and art and archaeology contributed to the Royal Ontario Museum's growing international reputation. In the aftermath of World War II a new generation of museum men and women took up the challenge of keeping the Royal Ontario Musuem one of the last combined science and art and archaeology musuems of first rank in the world. The unfolding story, with accomplishements, stresses, and strains interwoven, is captivating." One tiny corner bump, tiny bump at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front board. Accounts of the 'Mighty Eighth' in Europe, and indeed many of the books and films that emerged from the greatest air campaign in history, often overlook the B-24, even though it was in a c t i o n for as long as the Flying Fortress, and participated in just as many perilous daylight bombing missions. Twenty-one bomb groups saw action with the Eighth from 9 October 1942 through to VE-Day, operating both from airfields in the 'bombe r tr ia ng le ' in East Anglia, and North Africa. 797 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802025846 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "From a small militia organization the Canadian air force had grown by 1945 into one of the country's three major autonomous military services. In this second volume of the RCAF's official history, covering the years from 1918 to 1945, W.A.B. Douglas chronicles the force's rapid growth and provides a vivid portrait of the Battle of the At lantic as it was fought from the eastern shores of Canada. Military necessity had brought Canada into the air age. In the peaceful 1920s, civil more than military concerns governed the shape, size, and functions of the RCAF; in the followi n g d e c a d e the rise of international tensions forced the service to concentrate on its military role. During the Second World War the RCAF grew from a few hundred airmen to a force of some eighty squadrons and nearly a quarter of a million pe op le . RC AF s qu adrons, wings, and groups took their place beside other Allied air forces in many theatres of the Second World War, and in the process acquired capabilities in virtually every phase of air warfare. The roots of the RCAF's growi ng rep ut a tio n i n o ver seas theatres, especially in the Northwest Europe campaign, were to be found at home. Responsible for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, the RCAF trained large numbers of other Commonwealth and Allied air men as we ll a s Ca nadi ans. Charged with the air defence of Canada, it built up a big Home War Establishment which fought on the Pacific Coast and also played a significant part in the defeat of enemy attempts to destroy Allied shipping, par ticu larl y i n t he Ba ttle of th e Atl antic. The latter was a crucial role, sustaining Great Britain and the Allied forces in Europe. Directed from headquarters at Halifax, aircraft of Eastern Air Command ranged from the St Lawrence River to mi d-oce an, u ltim atel y thwa rting Germa n U-bo ats that nearly severed the North Atlantic under British Command. Douglas's account is the first to give proper credit to the RCAF for the part it played in these operations. It also incorporates ne w info rmatio n on perso nalitie s, tec hnology , and i ntelligence." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. "In April 1943, the Royal Canadian Navy assumed responsibility for Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command, the only operational area to be run by a Canadian Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Base d on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that con f r o nted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-ill us tr at ed history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." 300 Douglas-Hamilton, James. Introduction by Laddie Lucas. THE AIR BATTLE FOR MALTA: THE DIARIES OF A FIGHTER PILOT.
Wrens Park, n.p., 2000, reprint.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island.
