BOYS, BOMBS AND BRUSSELS SPROUTS: A KNEES-UP, WHEELS-UP CHRONICLE OF WWII., Harvey, J. Douglas.
261 Harvey, J. Douglas. BOYS, BOMBS AND BRUSSELS SPROUTS: A KNEES-UP, WHEELS-UP CHRONICLE OF WWII.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1982 0771040482 / 9780771040481 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
210 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "They called them the 'Brylcreem boys' - the young flyers who streamed into England from the first declaration of war, the kids with the jaunty grins and the willingness to take terrible risks. Among them were thousands of young Canadians, many barely out of high school, all delighted to leave behind humdrum lives in dusty, post-Depression Canada for the irresistible chance to learn to fly and help beat the Germans. Doug Harvey was one of them - a nineteen-year-old from Toronto who joined the RCAF, and in 1942 found himself a pilot in the elite Canadian No. 6 Bomber Group. (Here) is the fresh, frank, and often hilarious account of Harvey's experiences overseas. It is an unexpurgated description of what really happened to the group of young Canadian men who suddenly found themselves billeted in freezing Nissen huts in the lush English countryside - surround-ed by an unfamiliar people, whose customs puzzled and delighted them - and charged with the job of bombing Gemany into ruins. It is the chilling story of crews flying through the silent night skies, their lumbering Lancasters loaded with bombs, headed for unseen desinations hundreds of miles away. It is the jubilant story of the boys who made it safely home, mission accomplished, and the heart-breaking story of the thousands who didn't." Faint erased pencil narks at top corner of free front endpaper, light edge wear, book is slightly cocked, tiny foxing marks on top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two edge tears archivally taped, light foxing on inside of spine, slight darkening to spine and some edges, tiny closed tear on front hinge, light rubbing and soiling.

263 Hatsuho Naito. Foreword by James Michener. Preface by Hachiro Hosokawa. Introduction by Boye De Mente. THUNDER GODS: THE KAMIKAZE PILOTS TELL THEIR STORY.
New York Kodansha 1989 0870119095 / 9780870119095 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
215 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, map. "(T)he compelling first-hand account of the pilots who pledged themselves to die for their emperor in the closing days of the Pacific War. Known to the world as kamikaze - divine wind - their suicide attacks on American naval forces caused panic and disruption, but they were born out of the desperation of the Imperial Command, determined to avoid the shame of surrender at any cost. Using as a rationale the loudly proclaimed belief that suicide attacks by Japanese pilots attested to the spiritual righteousness of Japan's struggle, the Command's exhortations convinced legions of young men of the virtue of volunteering for the Ohka program, in which flying bombs were constructed whose only guiding mechanism was their human cargo. The pilots are the thunder gods of the title, and this is the first time they have told their own story. (C)ombines military history, technical innovation, and the personal stories of men of whom something extraordinary was asked, men who died in futility or survived to reflect on their experiences with mixed feelings of pride, poignance and cynicism. These pilots were not fanatics or automatons, but sacrificial victims to the excesses of war. 'Thunder Gods' tells their story, and returns to them their humanity." Minor soiling on fore edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling .

223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, maps, reproductions. "The real-life quest to free WWII planes (6 P-38 Lightnings and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers), entombed within a Greenland glacier. They had become an Arctic legend. Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. Here is the gripping, true story of how perseverance triumphed over seemingly impossible odds in pursuit of a dream." Slight bump at top of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. HITLER & GELI., Hayman, Ronald.
269 Hayman, Ronald. HITLER & GELI.
Bloomsbury, London, 1997, first edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0747527237 B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nine teen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a h o u s e in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could r e la x wi th his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was al way s dog ge d b y H itler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis...In 1931, aged twenty-t hree , Geli Ra ubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becom in g emo tion al... (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS., Heal, S.C.
270 Heal, S.C. A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS.
Vanwell, St Catharines, Ontario, 1999, first edition.
312 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1551250233 B&w photographs, drawings, plus large fold-out plan: "General Arrangement Standard Steamer" in pocket at rear. "The era of the Canadian Forts and Parks has long since passed into history. While it lasted, it engaged a great deal of effort and capital on a scale never seen before in our country; from the men and women in the shipyards, to the crews who manned the ships, and the industrial leaders who transformed the s h i p y a r ds from very small-scale producers into world-scale shipbuilders for their day. By 1941 Canada's small shipbuilders had begun to turn out a fleet of 10,000- and 4,700-ton merchant ships which in every way were the equal of those from Br it is h an d Am erican shipyards. At the height of this great effort the Canadian yards were delivering one new ship every three days. Not only did we send to sea a large fleet of Park ships under the Canadian flag, manned by Canadian crews and ma nag ed by Ca na dia n managers, but we also bare-boat-chartered a similar size fleet of Fort sister ships for British management and operation. These Fort and Park ships were to be found in every theatre of war from 1942 on, at all times willi ng w orkh ors es of t he ocea ns, unheralded, unsung and later, like their crews, usually ignored by historians and government alike. While the postwar survivors of this fleet sailed under many flags, they did constitute an important element in reb uildi ng th e pe ace that fo llowe d. And now that Canada is no longer an owner of deep sea ships under the Canadian flag, it is timely that we remember our achievement of over fifty years ago. It was a unique undertaking that will never be repe ated i n a wo rld n ow s o diff eren t." M oderate bump at top of spine/rear hinge area. Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." 141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, etc. "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war was crucial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won by its pilots (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Market that the RAF 's last bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom March 1944 Nos 571, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photographs, maps and plans, each chapter focuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a fascinating depiction of a bomber airfield at war." Very small bump at bottom of spine. 278 Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by. ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Public Record Office, Richmond, 2002.
Collection of 16 facsimile documents in card case - in original publisher's shrinkwrap. ISBN 1903365406 "The story of Allied codebreaking during the Second World War is one of extraordinary complexity, significance and success. The centre of Brit ain's codebreaking operation was at Bletchley Park (the home of 'Station X' during the war), and it was here the codebreakers raced to decipher German military signals, in particular the 'unbreakable' naval Enigma codes. The special intelli g e n c e ( r eferred to as 'Ultra') that they provided had a major influence on the outcome of hostilities, most notably contributing to crucial successes in the Battle for the Atlantic. Despite Churchill's orders at the end of the war that all e vi de nc e re l at in g to codebreaking be destroyed, many papers, including internal histories, summaries, and copies of decrypts, did survive. Key documents from this unique archive - many of which have never been published before - are faithfull y r epr odu ce d i n thi s p ack, providing a fascinating introduction to Britain's cryptographic secrets of the Second World War." 208 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, map. "Like many of his friends, Charlie Hobbs was eager to join up when (WWII) broke out in 1939. Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. 'Charlie's Story' is all about hope, friendship and the strength of the human spirit." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor rubbing.
