CARRYING PLACE., Mowat, Angus.
201 Mowat, Angus. CARRYING PLACE.
Toronto S.J. Reginald Saunders 1944 Second Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good
318 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). The author was the father of Farley Mowat and brings references to Prince Edward County and the Hasty P's into his novel. "From the moment this story opens, in the dim light of the study of an old rectory in an old town (Trenton, Ontario), you are caught up in the secret of a man's life; not the secret of what became of him physically, but the real and inner mystery of youth growing into maturity, of hope growing into surety and waning into doubt and blazing forth at the last into the final certainty. It is the story of Eric Dalton and Mona Crozier. The story of a boy who fell in love with a young girl one tender summer evening on the lonely island called Carrying Place (Prince Edward County, Ontario); and of the man who bitterly renounced her in a quiet haven beside the English Channel, only to find that his life was forever bound to hers. He was never to be free from her, through years of peace and of war, through romance and heartbreak, passion and despair, to the final night of decision and beyond - ." Very light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny light foxing marks on top of textblock, a few faint marks on title page and one on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small chips and tears (some with creases) - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, red colored section at bottom of spine has faded to white.

MY FATHER'S SON: MEMORIES OF WAR AND PEACE., Mowat, Farley
202 Mowat, Farley MY FATHER'S SON: MEMORIES OF WAR AND PEACE.
Toronto Key Porter 1992 1550134302 / 9781550134308 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
340 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, map. "In the summer of 1943, a young Farley Mowat landed on the beaches of Sicily with the First Canadian Infantry division as part of the initial Allied assault on western Europe. For a year and a half his division fought its way up the Italian 'boot' in a series of savage and bloody battles, driving the German army slowly northwards. As (he) saw his comrades killed and wounded in battle, his courage and convictions were constantly tested. His spirit was sustained, in part, by his strong relationship with his parents, especially his father. Angus Mowat, a wounded veteran of the Great War, was only able to re-enlist for home service. His many letters to his son combined idealism and his belief in the power of the written word with an enormous zest for life and instinctive irreverence for authority. 'My Father's Son' begins where Farley Mowat's earlier book about his war experiences, 'And No Birds Sang', ended, recreating the later years of the Italian campaign with its devastating effects on the young men who bore the brunt of it." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket minor edge wear, minor rubbing, small crease at top of both hinges, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

London John Murray 2004 0719556465 / 9780719556463 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
362 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "On 19 August, 1914, the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II, wrote a letter to the First Army commander, General von Kluck: 'It is my Royal and Imperial Command that you concentrate your energies and the valour of my soldiers to exterminate the treacherous English and walk over General French's contemptible little army.' (This book) chronicles that little army, the British Regular Army of 1914: how it came to be in France at all, the long years of intrigue and preparation that preceded its departure, and what happened to it in four short months of total war. Robin Neillands uses a wealth of first-hand accounts, and his great experience in bringing military history alive, to take the reader on a gripping and horrific journey to the battlefields of First World War France." New York BasicCivitas 2009 0465003176 / 9780465003174 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The 369th Infantry Regiment was the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. In a war where the vast majority of black soldiers served in the Service of Supply, unloading ships and building roads and railroads, the men of the 369th trained and fought side by side with the French at the front (America's segregation policy prohibited them from serving together with white American soldiers) and ultimately spent more days in the trenches than any other American unit. They went to war in defense of a country afflicted by segregation, Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and racial violence, but a country they believed in all the same. Despite extraordinary odds, the 369th became one of the most successful - and feared - regiments of the war. The Harlem Hellfighters, as their enemies named them, showed extraordinary valor on the battlefield, with many soldiers winning the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor, and were the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine River. A riveting depiction of both social triumph and battlefield heroism." Tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

"From Bruneval to North Africa, from Normandy to Suez, by parachute and glider the men of the Airborne Forces have gone by air to battle. But their activities have by no means been confined to purely airborne operations - the Special Air Service performed prodigies of valour behind the German Lines in the Western Desert and Italy; the Glider Pilot Regiment fought beside their infantry com rades in Normandy, at Arnhem and across the Rhine. Their post-war successors, maintaining these traditions, have stood between Jew and Arab in Palestine; fought and sweltered in the jungles of Malaya and Borneo; sweated in the Persian Gulf a n d t h e Radfan; choked on the summer dust of Cypriot roads; tasted the grit and sand of Egypt and Jordan in their mess tins; spent more than a deade facing terroritst ambush, bombs and bullets in Northern Ireland; exprienced the subzero temperat ur es an d bi t ing actic winds of the South Atlantic and 'tabbed' across the Falklands to spearhead victory in 1982. Nor should the aircrews who flew them be forgotten, or the air supply despatchers who maintained them, and the units who supporte d t hem . W it h w el l over 100 photographs and illustrations this book is a comprehensive single-volume history of the Airborne Forces. Accounts are given of the airborne actions fought by the British Army, whilst the development of the parachu te a ssau lt and th e us e o f glider-borne troops can be followed from their infancy to the massive 'coup de main' technique employed in the Rhine crossing." Ward Lock, London, 1973.
518 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 706310012 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps, colour plates. "....the story of two Cavalry regiments, the 14th and 20th Light Dragoons, which were eventually amalgamated after the First World War to form the 14th/20th King's Hussars. Colonel Oatts has written a fascinating and often amusing story of the two Regiments in peace and war, deftly intertwined, and presented against a background of the history of Europe and the dev elopment of the British Empire. He takes us from the Jacobite Rebellions through the long struggle with Napoleon, the Indian Wars, with both Regiments fighting the Boers in South Africa at the turn of the nineteenth century. The horrors a n d d i s c o m forts of the Great War in France and Mesopotamia are fully described. With the rise of Hitler's Germany the horse gave way to the tank and the amalgamated Regiment went through its frustrating period of the Second World War and t he p os t -w ar p er io d as part of the Royal Armoured Corps. The Author takes us up to 1970, with the first visit to the Regiment of the newly appointed Colonel-in-Chief, H.R.H. The Princess Anne. Part of the Regiment was shortly destined to s erv e, for t he fir st tim e, in the Far East and after 1971 play its part in turbulent Ulster....The title of the book is the nickname of the 14th dating from 1813 when the Regiment captured the silver chamber-pot, originally owned by Napoleon, f rom Kin g Jo sep h B onap art e's car ria ge after the battle of Vittoria. It has since been a valued possession of the Officers' Mess." 276 pp, small 4to (10" H), soft cover. ISBN 1555714986 "On 7 August 1942, the amphibious assault on Tulagi and Guadalcanal was the first American offensive in World War II against the rampaging forces of the Empire of Japan. The enemy retaliatio n - from the sea, air and on land - was swift, fierce and bloody. Yet many soldiers contend the greatest struggle of all was confronting the 'Green Hell' - a reeking, rotting and malaria-infested jungle that tested any soldier's strength and c o u r a g e. Against all odds, the young and inadequately trained and supplied 1st Marine Division, commanded by Lt. General Archer Vandergrift and the Army's equally inexperienced 164th Infantry Regiment held onto Guadalcanal for four awesome m o nt hs a ga in st the best trained and seasoned forces that Japan sent in. FOLLOWING THE DRUM: WOMEN IN WELLINGTON'S WARS., Page, F.C.G., Brigadier. Foreword by Elizabeth Longford.
217 Page, F.C.G., Brigadier. Foreword by Elizabeth Longford. FOLLOWING THE DRUM: WOMEN IN WELLINGTON'S WARS.
Andre Deutsch, London, 1986, first edition.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0233979603 B&w illustrations. "Although the Duke of Wellington's Peninsular War and Waterloo campaigns (1808-15) have been well documented by the great military historians, biographers and diarists of the period, many general readers are unaware that it was the custom of each regiment to be accompanied by a number of wives when it left England to go to war. Now Brigadier Page has unearthed a wealth of fascinating detail a b o u t t h ese dedicated women, who made a contribution to morale, and hence to victory, that has never before been fully acknowledged. In an elegant and lively style, he describes the selection process whereby wives drew 'To-Go' of 'Not-to-Go' t ic ke ts o u t of a hat, their life on the troopships and their semi-official role as cooks and washerwomen to the invading army. He also recounts the experiences of the large entourage of Spanish, Portuguese and French women who shared the suffe rin g a nd dan ge rs en dured by their English admirers until the fighting was over, and were very often abandoned when the troops returned home. Many of the women were faithful, courageous and hardworking, others flighty and lacking in discipline , bu t th ey all cop ed with incredible harship in order to keep their families together and to bring some light and comfort into the brutal lives of the fighting soldiers. (This book weaves) authentic historical detail in accounts of individual h erois m, tr age dy a nd c ome dy, a ll of which are tremendously engaging and very well told. Culled from diaries and memoirs of the men who fought in Wellington's campaigns, and enhanced by contemporary illustrations, these stories make a genuine contri bution to schol arshi p an d prov ide a lasting tribute to the women who followed the drum." "The death of George Armstrong Custer, and over half of his now immortal 7th Cavalry Regiment in the valley of the Little Big Horn on 25 June 1876, has become the most celebrated battle of the Indian wars.
