Orion Press, (1960), first edition.
208 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Here, written by an expert for non-experts, is a fascinating account of the history and role of the geisha in Japan: a role that has frequently been misunderstood by Westerners. The author describes the historical development of the geisha, the social background which surrounds her, her training and accomplishments, her costume and hair style. He discusses the famous geisha of the past and the organization of the geisha system today, with special reference to postwar developments. Thus the reader is led to a proper understanding of this unique and highly accomplished social class which has no counterpart in the West." Onr leaf with small corner creases; small light stains on pages 198-200, on verso of page 201, and on page 203; light edge wear to boards; small stain on bottom of textblock. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, tiny chip/tears/creasing at top of spine, light edge wear/wrinkling, one small closed tear. VG-/G

London B.T. Batsford 1950 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
148 pp, 8 3/4" H. Colour (4) and b&w plates, b&w maps. "The author has visited, in person, every single building of note in all Spain, while viewing the incomparable landscape and taking note of Spanish music, the art and costume of Spain, and Spanish persons. He writes of such masterworks as Burgos Cathedral, Santiago de Compostela, or the Alhambra, but he is no less interested in places which are equally characteristic and whose merits are far less well known. Thus, he is equally at home with the people and their customs; the processions of Holy Week, the Gypsies, the bull fights, the cave dwellers of the Barrio de Santiago." Dust jacket is price-clipped; has light browning to spine, flap-folds and some edges; light edge wear/wrinkling; a few very small edge tears; protected in a mylar sleeve.

204 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

205 Soong, Stephen C., editor. SONG WITHOUT MUSIC: CHINESE TZ'U POETRY.
Renditions / Chinese University Press, Hong Kong, (1980).
282 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Chinese calligraphy, music examples, 2 color plates. "Tz'u originally was written to music to be sung; the word itself means 'song words' in Chinese. While the literary aspect of tz'u is derived from the five and seven-syllable lines of regulated verse or shih, its musical element can be traced back to the triumph, in the early T'ang dynasty, of popular foreign songs over native ones. Tz'u, in fact, is an overflow of shih. When T'ang poetry could no longer express adequately man's more refined and delicate feelings, and when the simple quatrains could not longer contain the spirit of song, it was natural for a new genre to emerge...The approach of the present volume of essays and translations of tz'u is an intimate rather than a pedantic one, for its purpose is to take the poetry-loving reader, as it were, by the hand, and welcome him into a new world. It is an attempt to present a comprehensive view of tz'u poetry, its intrinsic qualities as well as the achievements of individual writers. Through the nine interpretive essays and the eight translations of individual tz'u poets in the present anthology, the reader will gain a deeper in sight in to tz'u poetry and see its continuity in the history of Chinese literature." Leo Cooper, London, (1972), First edition.
239 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, color frontispiece, b&w photographs, reproductions. "The 34th of Foot, raised in 1702, and the 55th, raised in 1755, came together in 1881 to form the Border Regiment. The separate battalions had already seen service in nearly every corner of the globe in which it was the privilege of the British infantryman to freeze, swelter, sicken and die - the heroic deeds of the 34th at Arroyo-dos-Molinos and the honours won by the 55 th in China being commemorated in the centre-piece of their joint capbadge, surrounded by the Fontenoy laurel wreath of the 34th. As Douglas Sutherland most ably shows the Regiment more than lived up to its glorious past in the two World Wars and many a Border soldier found his last resting place in the mud of Gallipoli or Flanders, and later in the heat of the Desert, in Sicily, in Burma and at Arnhem. In 1959 the Border Regiment was amalgamated with the King's Own Ro ya l R egiment and, as the author says, 'for many old soldiers something very dear to them was passing out of their lives for ever'. This book is a tribute to those old soldiers and, hopefully, an inspiration to those who still cherish the 'Border' spirit." Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.
127 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Raised separately at the end of the eighteenth century as the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders, (the Regiments) saw many adventures before they were merged as one Regiment in 1881. Both saw service in many parts of the world, the 93rd in particular gaining immortal fame as 'The Thin Red Line' at Balaclava and in winning seven V.C.s before breakfast at the relief of Luck n o w . T h ere have been few spheres of military activity in British history over the past 250 years in which the Argylls have not been involved and in the great catastrophes of the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars they have been in the forefront of the b at tl e, a d di ng lustre to an already famous name. Commander after commander has paid tribute to the fighting qualities of the Regiment who time and again have proved their worth. In the Second World War, the 2nd Battalion earned undying glory in de fea t. T hey we re the rearguard of the terrible march out of Malaya and the subsequent fall of Singapore. For a time they ceased to exist until the 15th Battalion assumed their name and honours. Since the war few Regiments have seen mor e se rvic e th an the Arg ylls . They have been present at every trouble spot from Palestine, through Korea to the famous action in the crater at Aden which focused worldwide attention on them. Now, with the threat of disbandment hanging over the m, th ey so ldier on , pr oud a nd de fiant to the last."
