THE KING'S OWN ROYAL REGIMENT (LANCASTER) (THE 4th REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Green, Howard
201 Green, Howard THE KING'S OWN ROYAL REGIMENT (LANCASTER) (THE 4th REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, (1972), first edition.
143 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520908 B&w illustrations, march. "The Regiment (repelled many offensives) in its early life - particularly at Minorca in 1756, Salamanca, Waterloo, Inkerman, Sebastopol and Spion Kop in the South African War. It was one of the few British regiments to make the desert march across Abyssinia for the attack on Magdala, and also fought in the Zulu War. Wherever the fighting was most deadly and the odds against victory most daunting, it is safe to assume that the King's Own were there. The Regiment boasted twenty battle-honours when the Great War broke out, and in those dreadful four years of slaughter it was to add a further 59 - Le Cateau, Retreat from Mons, Marne 1 9 1 4 , A i s n e 1914, Festubert 1915, Loos, Passchendaele, Macedonia 1915-18, Suvla, Tigris 1916, Baghdad; these are just a few of them. In the Second World War the King's Own waited patiently for the ships at Dunkirk; fought in Syria, North Afr ic a an d I ta ly ; sw eated out the siege of Malta; penetrated hundreds of miles behind the Japanese lines as Chindits. All these actions, and more, are described in this vivid and action-packed story." Previous owner's small stamp on each of fro nt en dpa pe rs , t iny b ump to bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good

BLUE MOON RISING / BLOOD AND HONOR / DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN. FIRST THREE VOLUMES OF THE "FOREST KINGDOM" SERIES., Green, Simon R.
203 Green, Simon R. BLUE MOON RISING / BLOOD AND HONOR / DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN. FIRST THREE VOLUMES OF THE "FOREST KINGDOM" SERIES.
New York ROC Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good
The first three volumes of the "Forest Kingdom" series, 6 7/8" H. 1. Blue Moon Rising - 476 pp, 1991, 2nd printing, ISBN 0451450957 - "Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. After all, a kingdom suffering from financial setbacks couldn't afford to have factions fighting over who was more worthy to rule as the next king. So Rupert was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legends. But he also discovered the kind of things legends didn't tell, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the Night Witch - even the terrors hidden in the Darkwood. Rupert found his dragon and a princess to rescue, too. But the dragon turned out to be a better friend than anyone back at the castle. And with the Darkwood suddenly spreading its evil - with the blue moon rising and the Wild Magic along with it, Rupert was going to need all the friends he could get - ." 2. Blood and Honor - 332 pp, 1993, first printing, ISBN 0451452429 - "Jordan had always prided himself on his acting abilities, but now he faced the challenge of his career. Magicked into looking exactly like Prince Viktor, middle son of the recently assassinated King Malcolm, Jordan had been hired to pretend to be the prince as a war of succession raged at Castle Midnight. With both Viktor's (brothers) only too eager to dispatch their middle sibling, thereby increasing their own chances to gain the crown, Jordan soon found himself hard pressed to survive. And in a castle where the winds of Unreality might at any moment sweep down upon the unsuspecting, leaving behind little that was recognizably human, Jordan could only hope for a very short run in the role of prince and a quick escape from the kingdom with the fortune promised him for a successful job." 3. Down Among the Dead Men - 283 pp, 1993, 2nd printing, ISBN 0451453018 - "The Witch's Sight was their first warning of danger. The four Rangers had been sent to check on the border fortress which had fallen mysteriously silent. What they found defied explanation - but all too soon the nightmares that reigned here would seek to possess them. Even with the unexpect-ed aid of three outlaws - the first a keeper of the Wild Magic, the second the bearer of the last Infernal Device of the Demon Wars, and the third a master bowman - it was doubtful that the Rangers could stand against the creature that waited in the depths below the fortress. And if they could not find it before it woke, this most ancient beast would rise up to wreak destruction on the world." Interiors - very light browning in margins of pages, two volumes with browning on inside of covers, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exteriors - light browning to edges of text blocks, one volume with some very light soiling on fore-edge of text block, very light edge wear.

These are stories that belong to twentieth-century farmers, shopkeepers, and high-steel workers who have never lost their communion with the natural world, which for them is also the world of the spirit. The stories' integration of traditional and present-day realities is beautifully realized in the remarkable pencil illustrations of Gary Miller, another native of the Six Nations Reserve." London Oxford University Press 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Neville Dear.
154 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). B&w illustrations by Neville Dear, dust jacket design by Gareth Floyd. Translation of "Shrimp le Corsaire", first published in 1954. "This is an epic tale of buccaneer adventure on the high seas; it is the story of Viscount Saint-Elme, known as the 'Malamok', who had once owned a fine fleet of privateers and used them in the service of his king, Louis XIV of France. But one of his officers proved treacherous, causing the Malamok's eldest son to be unjustly dishonoured and imprisoned. Thenceforward, misfortune dogged the Malamok who had withdrawn from the king's service and become a pirate. All of his ships but one were destroyed, and the old buccaneer knew only one aim: that of vengeance so that the family name might be cleared. Accompanied by the boy Shrimp, his young protege, the Malamok set sail on his last remaining ship, the 'Remailleuse', on a voyage of piracy and battle, seeking to destroy his enemy." 212 H.R.H. Princess Pilar of Bavaria and Major Desmond Chapman-Huston. Introuction by Aubrey F.G. Bell. DON ALFONSO XIII: A STUDY OF MONARCHY.
John Murray, London, 1931, first edition.
436 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Family tree, b&w plates. "King Alfonso is one of the most outstanding figures now alive, in contemporary political history, in sport, and in social life. He is much beloved and equally disliked , as recent events in Spain have proved. This study, written by a very near relation, in collaboration with a well-known English author, shows the King as he really is, in public and in private life; it shows what his aims are, and how he h a s t r i e d to carry them out; and explains the present difficulties in Spain and the collapse of the monarchy. The authors, in writing this book, have had privileges and sources of information which have been given to no one else, and they h av e ha d p er so na l experience of the revolution. It is, therefore, essentially an authoritative work, as well as being immensely interesting both from the historic and the human points of view." London Brockhampton 1999 1860199852 / 9781860199851 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

Colour plates and decorative vignettes ("60 designs"). Contents: Preface; The Gorgon's Head; The Golden Touch; The Three Golden Apples; The Miraculous Pitcher; The Chimaera. "The author has long been of the opinion that many of the classical myths were capable of being rendered into very capital reading for children. In this little volume here offered to the public, he has worked up half a dozen of them, with this end in view. A great freedom of treatment was necessary to his plan; but it will be observed by every one who attempts to render these legends malleable in his intellectual furnace, that they are marvellously independent of all temporary modes and circumnstances." From the author's Preface of 1851. Book is Near Fine. Slipcase has very small bump at top front corners, very minor rubbing.
