232 pp, 9 1/4" H. Illustration section on green stock at front of book, map. "An ocean-going ship built of copper-sheathed mahogany. A trans-Siberian expedition that builds gallows every 20 miles. A circumnavigator who starts his working life as an apprentice to a Scottish grocer. Of the marvels and quirks of Europe's 18th-century forays to the northwest coast, few signs remain on Canada's Pacific shores. Yet before 1792, twenty-nine voyages reached land between what is now the California-Oregon border and the Bering Sea. Each of these voyages permanently altered the balance of power among European courts - as well as setting the tone of relations between the native peoples and the 'mau mau'l ney': those who came 'floating on the water without land'. Derek Pethick captures the political significance of each voyage while conveying the important details that make the men, their failures and accomplishments, come alive: for instance, the journal entry showing how the crew of the fated second Bering expedition, marooned on a desolate northern island, still debated whether they might lighten their misery by playing cards or whether this behaviour would be at variance with the tsar's orders." Faint erased pencil marks at top of front free endpaper, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small chips, several edge tears with old tape repairs on inside top edge, light rubbing/soiling, small surface paper loss on spine, small light water stain on inside bottom edge.

Editor Peter Phan traces this trend back to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) but notes that, in the last ten years or so, the movement has become pronounced. (The book) consists of eighteen papers deriving from a recent ecumenical conference in Istanbul, Turkey. The authors seek to add their contributions to contemporary interfaith dialogue." New York Grosset & Dunlap 1970 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Joseph A. Phelan.
128 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w drawings. "(A) vivid pictorial presentation of (aerial) warfare from the first use of aircraft in war - Italian reconnaissance against the Ottoman Empire in 1912 - to the Armistice in 1918. In striking color the great individual battles of the aces come alive: Immelman, von Richthofen, Voss and Boelcke; Bishop, Collishaw, McCudden, Ball and Beauchamp-Proctor; Rickenbacker; Guynemer, Nungesser and Garros. And the dogfights and sorties; Bloody April and the Fokker Scourge; the Lafayette Escadrille, the Storks, the Flying Circuses; the bombing raids; the balloon busters. The trials of combat and endurance and the men and aero-planes that made it all possible, changing the world's thinking about the methods of war. J.A. Phelan has created more than 400 superb paintings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticu-lous detail of the artist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allies and Central Powers are shown in detail (top and side views, camouflage, national markings and pilots' decorations, engines, armament and structure) and in combat as they were flown by the aces. This volume presents an unduplicated view of the 1914-1918 war in the air, when man first captured control of the sky in order to control the ground." A few tiny tape marks from previous protective sleeve at corners of endpapers, scattered tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, one slight corner bump. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge.

320 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs. "Beginning with the first Jewish settler, Moses David, the important role that Windsor Jews played in the development of Ontario's south is mirrored in this 200-year chronicle. The founding pioneer families transformed their Eastern European shtetl into a North American settlement; many individuals were involved in establishing synagogues, schools, and an organized communal structure in spite of divergent religious, political, and economic interests. Modernity and the growing influence of Zionism and Conservative/Reform Judaism challenged the traditional and leftist leanings of the community's founders. From the outset, Jews were represented in city council, actively involved in communal organizations, and appointed to judical posts. While its Jewish population was small, Windsor boasted Canada's first Jewish Cabinet members, provincially and federally, in David Croll and Herb Gray. As the new millenium approached, Jews faced shrinking numbers, forcing major consolidations in order to ensure their survival." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 352 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718144740 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, maps, reproductions. "Battlefields are the untold story of British archaeology. As the sites of events which too k place over hours rather than years, they have long been considered lacking in archaeological riches. However, recent pioneering work has shown that battlefields can provide dramatic revelations about the battle's course once the archaeol o g i s t s g e t digging beneath the surface. This is where Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver step in. As battlefield archaeologists they are in a unique position to challenge both the historical veiwpoint and contemporary eyewitness accounts. In (t hi s bo ok , th e y) v isit the sites of six major British battles (Shrewsbury, Barnet, Flodden, Newark, Culloden and the Firth of Forth) and carry out a full archaeological investigation of each. As they uncover artefacts abandoned in the heat an d c ha os of ba ttl e the y c losely follow the progress of each engagement and answer key historical questions, sometimes totally revising the accepted version of events. Each chapter is a fully framed investigation and follows an episode of the t elev isi on ser ies . B y usin g ar chaeology to unlock the secrets of the past, Tony and Neil prove that soldiers do not pass through fields of conflict like shadows, and in the process they show that battlefields are some of our most important na tiona l mo num ents ." 524 pp, 10 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. Camp Vernon officially celebrated "its Centennial as an army training camp in 2008. However, historical records indicate that discussions for its formation and actual military training activities began as early as 1896. This is a book of historical events and the personal stories of people training for war. You will find these men and women to be ordinary people, foot soldiers, who lived, trained and fought and, often died for freedoms we enjoy today. Open the door to an exciting part of Canadian Military History, a journey that will take you from soldiers on horseback to warriors in massive tanks bent on terrible destruction. Read onward, to the peacetime days of Cadets, the Reserve Army and a still active institution useful daily to its founding community, always at the ready for ever imminent war in today's fragile international political environment." 418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. 217 Reid, Ed. MAFIA.
New York Random House 1952 Third Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Good
238 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "Popularly know as The Black Hand, the Mafia, which began in medieval Sicily as a patriotic group, has been and still is in control of organized crime in the United States. It has achieved this dubious distinction by the systematic liquidation of rival, non-Sicilian gangs. The mere itemization of this long and bloody reign of underworld terror will give every responsible citizen pause for thought - after he has stopped shivering! This book contains much new material derived from secret sources. Perhaps the most sensational of its revelations links key Mafia figures with the Allied Military Government in Italy. How one of the most powerful Mafia heads, under indictment for murder in this country, turned up as an aide to AMG, received letters of recommendation from United States Army officers, and at the same time conducted huge blackmarket operations in American supplies, is one of the monstrous disclosures. Why this same notorious criminal, following his arrest, was not returned to the U.S. until after the strange death of the key witness against him, is another part of the riddle that hints at the enormous secret strength of Mafia terrorism. (The author) courageously digs deep into the muck of vice and crime to throw light upon a ruthless gang of killers and racketeers whose influence is as evil as it is widespread." Small initials in pen on free rear endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wear, creases at top edge with color loss - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear, minor browning.

350 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps/battle plans. "At breakfast on the morning of the battle of Waterloo, the Emperor Napoleon declared that the Duke of Wellington was a bad general, the British were bad soldiers and that France could not fail to win an easy victory. Forever afterwards, historians have accused him of gross overconfidence and massively underestimating the calibre of the British commander opposed to him. Andrew Roberts presents an original, highly revisionist view of the relationship between the two greatest captains of their age. The fascinating, constantly changing relationship between these two historical giants forms the basis of (his) compelling study in pride, rivalry, propaganda, nostalgia and posthumous revenge." Phillimore, (London, 1974), first edition.
218 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "The King's School continues an educational tradition that has lasted more than 900 years, with only one short break between the dissolution of the medieval Abbey of St. Peters and Henry VIII's establishment of the present school as part of the new Cathedral Church in 1545. A monastic school was well established when Abbot Serlo arrived in 1072, followed by an Almonry School which flourished up to the Dissolution. Through out the 17th and 18th centuries it was one of England's principal grammar schools, to which were sent the sons not only of leading Gloucestershire families but also of families of distinction from all over the country. The 19th century and the early years of this saw the School facing severe financial problems, but their eventual solution by the Ministry of Education and the Church Commissioners has led to revival and rapid expansion in recent years. Former pupils include many men who have achieved positions of national importance, including the joint founders of the Sunday School movement, one of the founders of Methodism, several bishops and an Archbishop of Canterbury, a famous explorer, and the compo ser of the American National Anthem. In these days of widespread questioning of teaching practices, Mr. Robertson's book will be of interest to historians and educationalists as an account of a school which has managed to maintain tradition and high standards over many centuries and to combine them with the most modern teaching."
