GHOSTS OF OLD EUROPE., Holzer, Hans.
201 Holzer, Hans. GHOSTS OF OLD EUROPE.
New York Dorset 1992 0880297182 / 9780880297189 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

THE BLACK GAME: BRITISH SUBVERSIVE OPERATIONS AGAINST THE GERMANS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Michael Joseph, London, (1982), first edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover (black binding with gold lettering on spine) - no dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. ISBN 0718117182 "This book is mainly concerned with certain British propaganda activities during the Second World War which were classified as 'black'. The BBC's broadcasts to Germany and enemy-occupied Europe, also leaflets bearing the imprint of HM Government and dropped by the RAF, were all 'white'. Black operations, however, never indicated their British origin. Various clandestine broadcasting stations, all of them outside the control of the BBC, sought, sometimes with surprising success, to give the impression that they were actually operating inside Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Great pains were taken to disguise the fact that a strangely variegated range of black printed matter had not, in spite of its convincing appearance and, where necessary, bogus imprints, been produced in Germany, France, Belgium, etc. Indeed, it was all manufactered in London. Little of it was disseminated by the RAF since other and far more covert methods were performed..." Faint erased pencil marks and small ghost sticker mark on free front endpaper, faint discoloration on top of textblock, tiny stain on fore-edge of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES., Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve.
208 Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve. AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES.
Ottawa University of Ottawa Pres 1989 0776602772 / 9780776602776 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, repro-ductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w illustrations. "(E)xamines the often stormy relationships (of the generals and politicians of the Great War), portraying the decision-making process on both sides. Many of the individuals involved remain household names today over eighty years on: Douglas Haig, Ferdinand Foch, David Lloyd George, Woodrow Wilson and the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. The results of their endeavours led to the now legendary carnage in Gallipoli, on the Somme, in the mud of Flanders and the frozen heights of the Alps. How did these great men conduct their relationships and decision-making? To answer this, the chapters range widely to look at the Home Front, the Western Front and America at war. They also deal with the role of royalty and sideshows such as Italy, where Britian and France came to the aid of faltering allies. In all of this, defeat or victory would be decided by the most forceful and dynamic leaders willing to listen to and accept the wisest counsel. (This book) brings together the works of distinguished authorities on this ever-fascinating period and adds significantly to our understanding of the often complex relationships at play." Minor browning to edges of textblock, two tiny edge tears with crease at top of page 139/140 - archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

RESISTANCE: A WOMAN'S JOURNAL OF STRUGGLE AND DEFIANCE IN OCCUPIED FRANCE., Humbert, Agnes. Translated from the French and with notes by Barbara Mellor. Afterword by Julien Blanc. Preface by William Boyd.
210 Humbert, Agnes. Translated from the French and with notes by Barbara Mellor. Afterword by Julien Blanc. Preface by William Boyd. RESISTANCE: A WOMAN'S JOURNAL OF STRUGGLE AND DEFIANCE IN OCCUPIED FRANCE.
Bloomsbury, New York, 2008, first American edition.
370 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1596915595 B&w photographs. "As the grip of the German occupation tightened on Paris in the summer of 1940, Agnes Humbert, a respected art historian, took a leap of blind faith and reckless courage. With the help of a few colleagues, she formed the highly effective Musee de l'Homme network, a keystone group within the French Resistance, and very likely the first of its kind. Indeed, the French Resistance was named after the group's n ewsletter, 'Resistance'. In 1941 many of its members, including its charismatic leader, Boris Vilde, and Agnes herself, were betrayed to the Gestapo and imprisoned. Seven of the men were condemned to death and executed by firing squad. The w o m e n were deported to Germany as slave workers. These are the events described with electrifying immediacy by Agnes Humbert in her secret journal, first published in France in 1946 and never before translated into English. With self-deprecat in g hu mo r a nd acerbic intelligence, she offers a uniquely personal and recklessly candid perspective on this dark and dramatic period, conveying striking details with graphic, cinematic intensity. Refusing even in the grimmest days to surrender he r com pas si on , humanity, or talent for spotting the absurd, she writes with a deft touch and sardonic wit that belie the palpable depth of her conviction and outrage. (This) is a testament to one woman's indomitable spirit, an eloquent tribu te t o the sacr ifi ce and courage of her comrades who did not survive." Tiny tear with creases at top of front hinge, very small remainder mark dot on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Very Good/Very Good+

213 Innes, Michael. LORD MULLION'S SECRET.
London Gollancz 1981 057502903X / 9780575029033 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Mullion Castle is a very Stately Home. When the paying customers aren't cluttering up the place, it's the home of the Earl and his family, who include his delightful daughters Patty and Boosie, and dotty Great-aunt Camilla. Also his wife, whose portrait he has now commissioned his old schoolfellow, Charles Honeybath R.A., to paint. Honeybath (is) an astute and inquisitive observer of events; and now he has another intriguing complex of puzzles to ponder over. For instance, who has removed a valuable Hilliard miniature, an ancestral portrait, and substituted an obvious print; and why? Who has removed two of Great-aunt Camilla's water-colours of Italian scenes, and substituted sketches made by her in France; and again, why? And how does it come about that a young undergardener, with the name of Swithin, should posses the family features so strikingly, and be such an attraction to Lady Patience - i.e., Patty? Honeybath addresses himself to these and other teasing problems, while Michael Innes goes his own witty, engaging, tongue-in-cheek way, following what may seem to be a predictable course but surprising us all, Honeybath included, at the finish." Tiny dint on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, soft crease at top of rear flap.

235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." THE JEDBURGHS: THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE ALLIED SPECIAL FORCES, FRANCE 1944., Irwin, Will, Lt. Col., U.S. Army (Ret.)
216 Irwin, Will, Lt. Col., U.S. Army (Ret.) THE JEDBURGHS: THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE ALLIED SPECIAL FORCES, FRANCE 1944.
PublicAffairs, New York, 2005, first edition.
323 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1586483072 B&w photographs. "The Jedburghs were a pioneering Special Forces unit, uniquely made up of American, British, and French volunteers. They parachuted deep behind the German lines to assist in the recapture of France in 1944. Dropped in teams of three, the Jeds would rally local opposition to the Germans and conduct guerrilla warfare - sabotage, ambush, and intelligence gathering - ahead of the advancing Allied armies. In doing so, they contributed to the Allied breakout from the Normandy bridgehead and to the rapid advance to the German border. Above all, the Jedburgh teams were trained to survive. The three-man teams could not be certain that their c o m m u n i c ations with London would survive the drop or that any meaningful resupply would be possible. They had to operate alone against extraordinary odds in a country almost entirely occupied by a hostile force, prepared to survive pitched ba tt le s wi th t he Wehrmacht and relentless manhunts by the Gestapo. Nor did they know how long they would have to wait before the Allied front line reached them. It was an enormous test of endurance, cunning, and strength of will." 217 Jack, Donald THAT'S ME IN THE MIDDLE. THE ADVENTURES OF BARTHOLOMEW BANDY. VOLUME TWO. (VOL. 2)
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1973 0385049013 / 9780385049016 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
300 pp, 8 3/8" H. "Here are the further misadventures of Bartholomew Bandy, World War I Ace extraordinaire introduced in 'Three Cheers for Me'. Bandy is once again lending his peculiar talents to the war effort. Fate has smiled (perhaps leered) on him and he is now a Lt. Colonel and liaison officer in London for the Secretary of State for Air. Most of Bandy's liaisons leave something to be desired. A penniless Bolshevik spy bullies him into buying a gaudy painting by an upstart named Matisse, a buxom widow makes forward advances at him under his fiancee's nose, and he's almost lynched when the Prime Minister, Lloyd George, picks him to make a speech denouncing the British Chief of Staff. Instead he's sent off to the trenches of France - to join a freewheeling bicycle brigade with unorthodox methods of killing Germans and staying in high spirits. Bandy is also subjected to a number of other horrors: an evening in a Dublin pub with a band of Irish rebels, a fox-hunt where, under Bandy's inspired directions, the hounds end up in his host's house, an unforgettable honeymoon in a Scottish castle, and an English country fair that could have been directed by Mack Sennett." Previous owner's embossed stamp mark on free front endpaper, tiny dint on half-title page, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, light browning to top and for-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light edge browning - mainly on inside edge, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, minor fading to spine color, two tiny closed perforations on front hinge, a few tiny stains on inside bottom edge of rear panel, two tiny scuffs on rear hinge.

218 Jack, Donald. Forewords by Pierre Berton and Martin M. Hoffman, M.D. ROGUES, REBELS, AND GENIUSES: THE STORY OF CANADIAN MEDICINE.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1981 0385155751 / 9780385155755 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
662 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(A) lively and absorbing account of more than 400 years of medicine in Canada, from the Indian shamans to the present day. Canadian doctors have made an enormous contribution to world medicine - their achievements range from the discovery of insulin to the development of the cobalt bomb. And the famouse names are here: Grenfell, Archibald, Osler, Bethune, Penfield, Selye, Banting. But, as Pierre Berton points out in his foreword, (this) is 'more than a history of Canadian medicine: in a curious way it is also a history of the Canadian nation. In his monumental examination of the place of doctors in our history, Donald Jack makes it clear that since Cartier's day medical men have been bound up in the development of the country - not only as practitioners but also as politicians, explorers, gadflies, soldiers, community leaders.' The author brings to his subject not only a depth of research but a novelist's eye for the dramatic, the humorous, and the eccentric. The medical men and women who appear in these pages, 'in their furs and shirtsleeves, bloodstained frock coats and sterilzed gowns, tell an intensely personal story of triumphant response to challenge; triumphant not least because their lives affirm the supreme value of the individual ego'." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing, slight browning to top/bottom edges.

Eac h side has been gingerly reconnoitering the other for weeks in what has become known as the 'phony war'. But Yeoman is flying into a fire storm. At that moment, the deadly formations of the Luftwaffe are winging toward the allied airfields . T h e B litzkrieg has begun. You are in the cockpit as Yeoman wheels and dives over the green fields of France. The dual machine guns and the hammering cannon of the Messerschmitt 109 can chew apart the canvas-covered Hurricanes, and Hitler's pi l ot s ha v e four years experience from the Spanish civil war. At first the British aviators are locked into textbooks echelons that the enemy easily picks apart. As the British Expeditionary Force fights its way to Dunkirk, the men of the RA F f ig h ter c omm an d work at the limits of their endurance, finding the performance envelope of their planes and scrambling for tactics to meet the German threat. This is the vivid story of an air force at war; of courageous young pilots flying aga ins t the odd s; a nd of man's rise to maturity in the brutal world of air combat, when sudden death at an early age is the order of the day, and the price of freedom." France, and the nightmare of Dunkirk, had turned George Yeoman into a veteran - an ace with several victories to his credit. Now he found himself fighting once more as the Luftwaffe hurled its might across the English Channel and the RAF's Spitfires and H u r r i c a n e s carved out the greatest air victory of all time over the harvest fields of southern England. But Yeoman had to face a different kind of battle too, a battle with his inner self, as he saw his friends go to their deaths one by one in t he c au ld ro n of that summer sky of 1940."
