AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3., Chartres, John.
202 Chartres, John. AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1999, reprint.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711015139 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "The Avro Shackleton completed 40 years of front-line service in the Royal Air Force. The first prototype (in shape an d concept a direct descendent of the Manchester-Lancaster-Lincoln-Tudor lineage) first flew in 1949, and the AEW aircraft of No 8 Squadron were still operational in the early 1990s. The aircraft undoubtedly marked the end of an era of the R A F ' s f o u r-piston-engined 'heavies', although it remained in service for nearly 30 years after it was first classified as obsolete. Built originally for anti-submarine warfare, the Shackleton had been used by the RAF for other roles, includ in g se ar ch an d re scue, colonial policing, troop and freight carrying, supplying weather ships, maritime surveillance and showing the flag....the author not only traces the Shackleton's origins and activities in many different roles but brings out t he dee p a f fec ti on felt for the type by both air and ground crews in spite of the arduous and sometimes perilous nature of the operations in which it had been involved. This book was first published in 1985 and statements made then were curr ent . Many of th ese may we ll have been overtaken by subsequent events." Dust jacket has fading to the spine colour - lettering still bright. Fine/Very Good

MILLAY IN GREENWICH VILLAGE., Cheney, Anne.

University of Alabama Press, Alabama, 1975.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0817371613 B&w illustrations. "It was Millay who captured in verse the freedom, spontaneity, quick wit, and beauty of the pre-1920s as no other poet did. She was a living symbol of the 'new woman' who could live, think, and love as freely as they chose. (This) is a psychological portrait of Millay in her finest years, the ones after she had freed herself of the repression of her childhood and youth and before she accepted th e b o n d s o f a stifling marriage. The four most important influences on Millay's life and art - Floyd Dell, Edmund Wilson, Arthur Davison Ficke, and Eugen Boissevain - are discussed at length in individual chapters. A separate chapter deals b ri e fl y wi th h e r less significant relationships. Dr. Cheney's fascinating study reveals that Millay's concern with and involvement in anti-war protests, women's rights, social injustice, lesbianism, and individual freedom make her not only a rep re sen ta tiv e w oma n of her own time, but very much a woman for our time, too." Faint cigarette odor, minor browning to pages, light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very light browning to fore -edg e a nd t op of t extb lock . Du st jacket has a few tiny chips, one very small tear archivally taped, light browning on spine and flap-folds and edges of panels, light rubbing, minor soiling. Very good-/Very Good-

209 Clark, Andrew. (Harold Pringle.) A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Alfred A. Knopf, (Toronto, 2002), first edition.
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 067697354X "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war..." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." 213 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK., Cleary, Frances.
214 Cleary, Frances. A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK.
Collins, Auckland, New Zealand, 1975, first edition.
166 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Mrs Kingi, the beloved heroine of 'This Mrs Kingi', continues her story in this delightful sequel. As she looks back on her seventy years in the small Bay of Islands area (New Zealand) that has been her home - and that of her family - for generations, Mrs Kingi ponders on the changes she has seen. Typical of these is the family of her daughter Lizzie and husband Sam. Flash and Gordon, the twins born at the end of the earlier book, are now stu rdy youngsters. Les, the oldest and Mrs Kingi's secret favourite, is away at school on a scholarship, with his future assured; and the other children are normal and healthy. Only Gus is a problem, and his grandmother worries that he may t u r n o u t t o be a bad Maori if his talent for carving and drawing is not encouraged. That is Mrs Kingi's strength, and her weakness: that she cares about everybody and everything in her immediate vicinity, from her friend Mrs Wiki's dog to the s ta te of t he wo rld in general. But there is one thing she can and does do, this 'wrinkled-up old Maori woman of no importance', as she calls herself. When faced with an agonising decision under the pressure of other people, Mrs Kingi accep ts wha t s h e f eel s a r e h er responsbilities - not only to her close family, but to all her people. The book ends on a triumphant note, as the whole district celebrates Mrs Kingi's seventieth birthday and, on the happiest day of her life, youn g G us g ives h er t he b est gi ft o f all." TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS., Cockett, Richard.
218 Cockett, Richard. TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1989, first edition.
229 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297795481 B&w photographs. "(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto ne glected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enli s t t h e n e wspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite t o an y a gr ee m en t between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal c on tac ts to cu rb th e p re ss, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs. (Thi s b ook) th rows new li ght on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain's entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-MI5 officer who ran the Conservative Research Depar tmen t. A t Ch amber lain' s be hest , Ba ll r an a scurrilous, anti-semitic newspaper called 'Truth' to slander his political opponents and even members of his own Cabinet. The involvement of Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous of the contemporary press propr ietor s, is also f ully revea led f or th e first time. Using original material from the Public Record Office and private archives, (it) exposes the way in which the peculiarly English customs and habits that governed relations between gover nment a nd pre ss bec ame ins titut ionali zed in the 1 930s to the permanent advantage of the government. (It) is thus a study of the system of government manipulation of the press - a system that exists to this day - as well as of Chamber lain an d appeas ement."
