THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE., Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier.
201 Clayton, Aileen. Foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Rosier. THE ENEMY IS LISTENING. THE STORY OF THE Y SERVICE.
Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK., Cleary, Frances.
202 Cleary, Frances. A POCKETFUL OF YEARS. ANOTHER MRS KINGI BOOK.
Collins, Auckland, New Zealand, 1975, first edition.
166 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Mrs Kingi, the beloved heroine of 'This Mrs Kingi', continues her story in this delightful sequel. As she looks back on her seventy years in the small Bay of Islands area (New Zealand) that has been her home - and that of her family - for generations, Mrs Kingi ponders on the changes she has seen. Typical of these is the family of her daughter Lizzie and husband Sam. Flash and Gordon, the twins born at the end of the earlier book, are now stu rdy youngsters. Les, the oldest and Mrs Kingi's secret favourite, is away at school on a scholarship, with his future assured; and the other children are normal and healthy. Only Gus is a problem, and his grandmother worries that he may t u r n o u t t o be a bad Maori if his talent for carving and drawing is not encouraged. That is Mrs Kingi's strength, and her weakness: that she cares about everybody and everything in her immediate vicinity, from her friend Mrs Wiki's dog to the s ta te of t he wo rld in general. But there is one thing she can and does do, this 'wrinkled-up old Maori woman of no importance', as she calls herself. When faced with an agonising decision under the pressure of other people, Mrs Kingi accep ts wha t s h e f eel s a r e h er responsbilities - not only to her close family, but to all her people. The book ends on a triumphant note, as the whole district celebrates Mrs Kingi's seventieth birthday and, on the happiest day of her life, youn g G us g ives h er t he b est gi ft o f all." Light edge wear, book slightly cocked, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three tiny corner creases. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, ligh t fa ding to sp ine colo r. V ery Goo d/Ver y Good

David McKay, New York, 1977, book club edition.
341 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, map. "(D)escribes moment by moment (the) August 17, 1943 raid as well as the second Schweinfurt mission, October 14, 1943 - the two most savage battles in the history of air warf are. It also describes day by day the lives and deaths of the men on both sides who faced each other not only in these but in other epic battles. Yet (this) is more than the story of the two famous Schweinfurt missions: it is also the story o f t h e development of the U.S. 8th Air Force in England, and the most crucial combat tests of the American daylight precision bombing strategy. Citing hundreds of previously unpublished documents, the book reveals for the first time the full s tr ug g le t o establish this daring American strategy against the conviction of many authoritative people that it would not work. These people included British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, all his air experts, and many generals and admiral s in the U .S. Ar my and Navy....American and British strategists were arguing this issue when, in February, 1942, Brig, Gen. Ira C. Eaker and his staff arrived in England to create the 8th Bomber Command. When Eaker launched the first great Sch we inf urt mis sion eig hte en months later, the matter was still undecided. Could the B-17s battle their way through the waves of Luftwaffe fighters and destroy the Schweinfurt factories? Or would the bombers be turned back, exposing the America n A ir F orce s st rateg y as a di smal failure? This was the issue that produced the crucial decision over Schweinfurt." 209 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Howerever, a period of over sixty years in the rapidly changing world of the nineteenth century could hardly show anything approaching uniformity of style. Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, New York, 1979, second impression.
255 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here is the dramatic and only inside account of the undercover police-FBI fencing operation - featuring cops in the guise of syndicate soldiers - whose stunning success put the 'Washington Sting' in headlines across the nation. Word was out on the street in Washington, D.C., that one of the best fences in years was working out of a warehouse on 25th Place, NE. PFF Inc., run by 'mob-connected' Italians, was buyi n g u p s t o len guns, office equipment, anything with resale value. Thieves all over the Washington area were soon submitting to the hard dealing of the gun-wielding Mafiosi, looking for quick cash and an association with the mighty aristocracy o f c ri me . As t he fence's main man, Pasquale Larocca, critically examined the typewriter or rifle offered across his bulletproof counter, and in one corner Mike Franzino cradled his shotgun in casual warning, there was no suspicion of a weapo n d ea dl y i n a d i ffe ren t way: a videotape machine which recorded every transaction from behind an unnoticed one-way mirror. 'Pasquale Larocca' and 'Mike Franzino' were the aliases of two of the undercover team of police and FBI men organize d to fi ght Was hing ton 's hig h la rceny statistics down at the underworld source. And five months after the opening of 'Police-FBI Fencing, Incognito' - five months of tense bargaining with suspicious professionals and comic encounters with f awnin g fl unki es an d pro stit ute s - t he fe nce closed around more than 200 criminals invited to meet a New York 'Don' at a party hosted by Larocca. They met, instead, with police. The single account of the caper written with the cooperation of the poli ce an d FBI and wi th fu ll a ccess to the incriminating videotapes, here is a true story of police politics and mayhem, streetwise ingenuity and volatile temperaments, told to authentic narrative effect with complete, uncensored detai l."
