Penguin, London, 1994.
496 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0140178465 B&w photographs, maps. "The Normandy Landings, the largest amphibious operation the world has ever seen, marked 'the beginning of the end of the Second World War'. Russell Miller's superb book offers a definitive account of 'being alive in 1944, being young, and being at war'. Letters, diaries, memos and dozens of interviews with veterans from all sides recreate the deception plans and dry runs, the desperate German wait behind the Atlan t i c W a ll, the disagreements between Allies, the ghastly ordeal of Omaha Beach, Resistance sabotage operations and the first day of battle. Throughout, Russell Miller has enticed from his old soldiers not only astonishingly vivid memories of ev en ts b u t th eir feelings as participants. Here, he writes, we find 'hysteria and horror interspersed with flashes of heroism and humour - these are the true voices of D-Day'." "Built to astonish and to celebrate the magnificence of the most powerful families in the world, royal palaces and houses are the consequences of an age in which the splendor and opulence of a prince or a people could be measured by the decor of a salon, by the grandeur of a building or the originality of a fountain. Suspended between the sky and the earth, as occurred in the Far East, or solidly rooted to the ground, as was the norm in Europe, the house of the monarch has alwys been the meeting point of two minds: that of the master, who saw in his house the expression of his power and creativity, and that of the architect a n d t e a m s of craftsmen who built it for him, often creating a noble monument rather than a place to live....This book tells of the mysteries and legends of the buildings and the official and secret versions of the history of their occupants. ISBN 0906428068 "....When theatres closed during the Blitz (Barbara Nixon) volunteered as an Air Raid Warden...a post which was very largely a male preserve, and she la ter transferred to the ARP headquarters in Kensington, London. Knowledgeable and candid, her account of the Blitz differs, often dramatically, from the official histories of the War and from much that has been written since...Barbara Nixon i s e x t r e mely funny, as she weighs up, one by one, the new colleagues she is thrown in with on the night shift at an Air Raid Wardens' post in central London. She is sad as she remembers comforting homeless children, their houses in ruins, t h ei r p ar en ts u nd iscovered. Often exhausted and sometimes frightened, she is angry with the Government and the local council, for their neglect of the poor, whose shelter was inadequate, often insanitary and occasionally more dangerous than t he ho us es the y l eft . H er anger is a political anger and the gulfs in society were clearly apparent to Barbara Nixon in the frustration caused by officials whose sense of self-importance was heightened by the crisis of the attacks from the a ir, an d w hos e c ompe tenc e to d eal with emergencies was frequently questionable. Barbara Nixon's wit punctures these petty Bumbles in words and in some of her line drawings which illustrate the text. "From Bruneval to North Africa, from Normandy to Suez, by parachute and glider the men of the Airborne Forces have gone by air to battle. But their activities have by no means been confined to purely airborne operations - the Special Air Service performed prodigies of valour behind the German Lines in the Western Desert and Italy; the Glider Pilot Regiment fought beside their infantry com rades in Normandy, at Arnhem and across the Rhine. Their post-war successors, maintaining these traditions, have stood between Jew and Arab in Palestine; fought and sweltered in the jungles of Malaya and Borneo; sweated in the Persian Gulf a n d t h e Radfan; choked on the summer dust of Cypriot roads; tasted the grit and sand of Egypt and Jordan in their mess tins; spent more than a deade facing terroritst ambush, bombs and bullets in Northern Ireland; exprienced the subzero temperat ur es an d bi t ing actic winds of the South Atlantic and 'tabbed' across the Falklands to spearhead victory in 1982. Nor should the aircrews who flew them be forgotten, or the air supply despatchers who maintained them, and the units who supporte d t hem . W it h w el l over 100 photographs and illustrations this book is a comprehensive single-volume history of the Airborne Forces. THE WAR IN THE YEMEN., O'Ballance, Edgard.
213 O'Ballance, Edgard. THE WAR IN THE YEMEN.
Archon, Hamden, Connecticut, 1971, first edition.
218 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0208010386 "....a remarkable account of a bitter war fought in almost medieval conditions in a little-known country. It is also, inevitably, the story of a country forced by the necessities of its own warfare to advance with reckless speed into the twentieth century. Major O'Ballance is the best qualified historian, both from his long familiarity with the Middle East, and from his books on modern warfare and guerrilla fighting which h ave gained him such a wide reputation, to write this account - the only comprehensive one to date - of the Yemen War. He begins with the Yemen in 1948, a land as impenetrable as Tibet to the Western world, where the tyrannical Imam Yahya r e c e i v e d c omplaints from his people on little bits on paper and decorated the wall of his capital with the heads of argumentative subjects; and he ends twenty years later with a Republican government in the same capital, using foreign aid to bu il d ro ad s an d h ospitals, and keeping a precarious status quo with the help of tanks and aeroplanes. In between, we are given a fascinating and almost classic description of the meeting and struggle of two worlds: the world of the Imams who ke pt pe ace by t aki ng ho stages from each of the warring tribes and regarded motor cars with considerable distrust; and the world of the young officers trained abroad who found good military reasons for quoting Khrushchev, Nasser and Mao Tse- Tung in th eir succ ess ful eff orts to unseat a dynasty of kings. And the continuous self-seeking participation of Nasser and Faisal in this conflict, as Major O'Ballance is at pains to stress, highlights more cogently than ever the intricate w eb of sus pici ons and p reju dice s in whic h the nations of the Middle East find themselves struggling to coexist." 518 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 706310012 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps, colour plates. "....the story of two Cavalry regiments, the 14th and 20th Light Dragoons, which were eventually amalgamated after the First World War to form the 14th/20th King's Hussars. Colonel Oatts has written a fascinating and often amusing story of the two Regiments in peace and war, deftly intertwined, and presented against a background of the history of Europe and the dev elopment of the British Empire. He takes us from the Jacobite Rebellions through the long struggle with Napoleon, the Indian Wars, with both Regiments fighting the Boers in South Africa at the turn of the nineteenth century. The horrors a n d d i s c o m forts of the Great War in France and Mesopotamia are fully described. With the rise of Hitler's Germany the horse gave way to the tank and the amalgamated Regiment went through its frustrating period of the Second World War and t he p os t -w ar p er io d as part of the Royal Armoured Corps. The Author takes us up to 1970, with the first visit to the Regiment of the newly appointed Colonel-in-Chief, H.R.H. The Princess Anne. Part of the Regiment was shortly destined to s erv e, for t he fir st tim e, in the Far East and after 1971 play its part in turbulent Ulster....The title of the book is the nickname of the 14th dating from 1813 when the Regiment captured the silver chamber-pot, originally owned by Napoleon, f rom Kin g Jo sep h B onap art e's car ria ge after the battle of Vittoria. 216 Perrett, Bryan. Foreword by Major-General J.M. Palmer. THE HAWKS: A SHORT HISTORY OF THE 14th/20th KING'S HUSSARS.
Picton, Chippenham, 1984, first edition.
151 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, uniform studies. "Throughout their long history, which dates from 1715, the Hawks have prided themselves on being good at their job, placing such emphasis on high individual standard of service that the Regiment awards its own medal in appropriate circumstances. Typically, the three battles of which it is proudest, Ramnuggur (1848), Ramadi (1917) and Medicina (1945) were all hard fights won against tremendous odds. The Regiment was formed from an amalgamation of the 14th and 20th Hussars, whose combined history spans every one of the world's major continents and includes such campaigns as the Peninsula, the Indian Mutiny, the Sudan, the South African War, the Western Front, Mesopotamia and Italy, to name but a few. Its first gallantry award was the rare commemorative medal struck for the victory of Preston in 1715, and it is the proud possessor of two Victoria Crosses, both won for the rescue of comrades in the most desperate circumstances. Since World War II the Regiment has served in Libya, Cyprus, the Far East, Ulster and Gemany. It is presently equipped with Chieftain tanks and recently its efficiency led to its being chosen to carry out troop gunner trials with the devastatingly accurate Improved Fire Control System. Bryan Perrett's immensely readable text rightly makes full recognition of the fact that a regiment's reputation is the sum total of its members 'individual effort..." A circumnavigator who starts his working life as an apprentice to a Scottish grocer. Of the marvels and quirks of Europe's 18th-century forays to the northwest coast, few signs remain on Canada's Pacific shores. Yet before 1792, twenty-nine voyages reached land between what is now the California-Oregon border and the Bering Sea. Each of these voyages permanently altered the balance of power among European courts - as well as setting the tone of relations between the native peoples and the 'mau mau'l ney': those who came 'floating on the water without land'. Derek Pethick captures the political significance of each voyage while conveying the important details that make the men, their failures and accomplishments, come alive: for instance, the journal entry showing how the crew of the fated second Bering expedition, marooned on a desolate northern island, still debated whether they might lighten their misery by playing cards or whether this behaviour would be at variance with the tsar's orders." 192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, colour cutaways. ISBN 0861242750 "German military aviation got off to a somewhat slow start in the years before World War I but innovative aircraft designs and brilliant pilots soon established a deadly reputation in the skies over the Western Front. The Germans were pioneers too in long-distance bombing by the naval air service's Zeppelins and the later Gotha aircraft. Despite t h e restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I innovation continued, to be accelerated when Hitler came to power and the new Luftwaffe had its baptism of fire in Spain. The Luftwaffe went on to play a vital part in th e B litzkrieg campaigns of the early war years and came close to defeating Britain in 1940. The later war years were dominated in turn by the efforts to hold back the American bombers by day and the British by night. In the process the best Ger man p il ots became the most effective in the world, the leading German ace, Hartmann, scoring some 352 victories, while in the technical field Germany pioneered the use of jet aircraft. The present day East German air force is by far the best equ ippe d i n t he Warsaw Pact outside the Soviet Union, fielding such types as the MiG-23 and MiG-27. The new West German Luftwaffe has undergone some problems with its aircraft but with the introduction of the Tornado it now has the equipment to mat ch it s un doub ted operational efficiency. (This book) features Bryan Philpott's carefully researched text as well as photographs and artworks depicting the great and famous aircraft, the men who fought in them and their role in the great conflict s of ( the 2 0th) century. "Dirty tricks - actions carried out surreptitiously to inflict damage - are the lifeblood of the secrets world and have a far greater impact on the lives of ordinary people than commonly imagined. From the MI5 plot against Wilson to the Iraqi oil-pipe super-gun, 'dirty tricks' have recently dominated the headlines: and in the exciting new era of East-West relations they are a growth industry. T h e W i l son years were a piping period for dirty tricks, both real and imagined, but the Thatcher reign is also having its share: since Gorbachev came to power the KGB's dirty tricks department has never been so active. In his long career Cha p ma n Pi n ch er h as been associated with many dirty tricks and confesses to deliberate involvement in some of them.
