To start with, she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards, as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window', which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose', 'The Language of Flowers', 'Marigold Garden', 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', to name but a few. This biography, written by her friends M.H. Spielman and G.S. Layard, was published in 1905, just four years after her death. It tells the story of her life and relates the romantic circumstances of her great friendship with John Ruskin. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER., Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter.
207 Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER.
Independent, Bromley, 1991, first edition.
432 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1872836011 B&w maps, plans, photographs, reproductions. "Having fought throughout the Battle of Britain, Ulrich Steinhilper was shot down as he flew his Messerschmitt Bf 109-E on a bo mber escort duty. As the wing turned over London it was attacked by 74 Squadron, 'The Tigers', and Sergeant Bill Skinner in a Spitfire was to claim the 'kill'. So it was that in late October 1940 Ulrich was to begin a phase of his life which w o u l d stretch him, at times, to the limit of physical endurance and at another to the edge of insanity. He was to become a prisoner of war, but he was not a man to embrace something as alien as imprisonment lightly and so he was to dedicate h i ms el f to t he idea of escape. This is the remarkable story of the man who was to become one of the select few, popularly known as 'Die Ausbrecherkonige von Kanada' (the breakout kings from Canada). It is a singularly remarkable history of inn ov ati on, c our age and, at times sheer audacity. The detailed record of the life of one very unusual German prisoner of war. It is entirely written from documents which were laboriously hand-written in 1943 and which, through a remarkable seri es of e vent s, were ret urned to Ulrich Steinhilper in 1953. It is not, therefore, the reminiscences of events which occurred fifty years ago, coloured and tainted by the passage of time, but the accurate and historically correct diary of an exce pti onal young ma n." Creas ing and repiar to top corner of rear paste-down, small piece torn from top corner of free rear endpaper, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has heavy wrinkling at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom o f re ar fl ap-fol d an d to p edge of front panel, light rubbing on rear panel with a few very light indentation lines. 215 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(A) rich and fascinating insight into Quebec's sense of its own identity. An exuberantly cheeky history lesson by Yvon Deschamps, the popular entertainer and monologuist; a reasoned and impassioned essay on the attitudes encountered by French Canadians outside Quebec from the pen of the late Andre Laurendeau, one of the province's finest journalists; or a 'memoire' of early childhood experiences expressed with a cool sense of outrage by Claire Martin - all of these are among the many fine pieces of writing presented (here). They explore the major themes of Quebec life and thought from the past and present, as well as views on the shape of the future. The list of authors is, in itself, a spectacular tribute to the vitality of the province's literary tradition. Poets, story tellers, historians, journalists, entertainers, playwrights, song writers - each has a special focus and casts a special light on Quebec's life and heritage." 213 Swift, Katherine. THE MORVILLE HOURS.
New York Walker & Company 2009 0802717535 / 9780802717535 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
368 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w drawings, map. "Some twenty years ago, (Katherine Swift) and her husband leased a house in Shropshire with a garden that became her passion. Driven to uncover its history, she takes readers on a journey back through time, linking the stories of those who lived in the house and tended the same red soil with her family's own saga. Spanning hundreds of years, 'The Morville Hours' is also deeply personal - a journey through the seasons and one of self-exploration, of finding one's place in the world and putting down roots. (It) takes the form of medieval Books of Hours, recalling the monastic past of the house. Each chapter is named after one of the Hours of the Divine Office and brings to life an hour of the day or night - from the crunch of grass underfoot at midnight on a frosty New Year's Eve to a perfumed May Day morning when the whole world seems young; from the enervating heat of a midsummer noon to the bloom of blue-black damsons picked on a golden September afternoon. Together they describe the arc of the gardening year and the arc of life." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top edge.
