210 Barbeau, Marius. New Introduction by George Clutesi. THE DOWNFALL OF TEMLAHAM.
Edmonton Hurtig 1973 0888300700 / 9780888300706 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good A.Y. Jackson, Edwin H. Holgate, W. Langdon Kihn, Emily Carr and Annie D. Savage.
253 pp, 7 5/8" H. Colour plates. "First published in 1928 (this) is the work of the distinguished Canadian ethnologist, the late Dr. Marius Barbeau. A prolific writer whose contribution to our knowledge of Indian and French-Canadian folklore, arts and crafts is unsurpassed, Barbeau offers in this book a sympathetic and dramatic portrayal of a vanquished race in conflict with itself. Based on the facts of a serious disturbance among the Indians of the Upper Skeena River in 1886, it is the story of Kamalmuk and Sunbeams, husband and wife, separated by opposing ambitions and the ambivalence of the Indian's attraction to the benefits of the white man's civilization and his revulsion against its excesses. Barbeau weaves into his interpretation of Temlaham, the ritual of authentic tribal customs and the expressive but poetic language of a people in anguish." Faint tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small glue stain on rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, slight fading to spine color, very light wear and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small tear archivally taped.

ARMISTICE 1918., Barclay, C.N., Brigadier.
214 Barclay, C.N., Brigadier. ARMISTICE 1918.
A.S. Barnes, New York, (1969).
155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918, Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various factors that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces, emphasizing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Armistice itself is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." 216 Barclay, Glen St. J. THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1976, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297771256 B&w plates. "(A) study of the military strength of Britain and her Empire during the Boer War, First World War and Second World War. Dr Barclay evaluates the contributions of Aus tralia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and the changing roles played by the colonies during times of crisis. He explains British attitudes to colonial troops - Australian indiscipline and New Zealand thoroughness - and the lack of diplomacy on the part of British military leaders when dealing with their colonial counterparts. After the South Africa War the British government should have seen clearly the advantages of an Empire Military Force, but reports on empire defence from eminen t naval officers such as Fanshawe and Jellicoe were repeatedly ignored. The colonies themselves all reacted differently to the threat of war. Australia was often at odds with New Zealand - the former worried about defending her own vulnerable coa st line, the latter primarily concerned to maintain friendly relationships with Britain; Canada was slow to become involved - but Canadian troops were a stirring sight, well-disciplined fighting men who obeyed their superiors without question; South Af rica made little contribution to the war effort, although her Prime Minister, Jan Smuts, gained great favour with the British Government by always agreeing, in principle, to every new plan put forward by the British. Dr Barclay has written an o utst anding account of the achievements of the British Empire during the late nineteenth and twentieth century, using a vast number of published and unpublished sources." "The Battle of the Hook was probably the last full-scale infantry battle, fought on traditional lines, that the world will ever see. It was also a classic set-piece example of a battalion in defence and was, in terms of steel, the biggest battle of the Korean War, and the most concentrated confrontation of artillery support and engineering effort since the First World War. In it the Black Watch and t he Duke of Wellington's Regiment defeated and completely routed a fanatical Chinese army who attacked them over a period of some fifteen days with incredible ferocity. The Chinese losses were so great that they never attempted such assaul t s a g a i n . It was a turning point of the Korean War and a triumph of British arms...."
