"A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. 36 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

"Undaunted by Hannibal's elephants, Scipio Africanus ordered his outnumbered cavlary to charge directly toward the massive beasts - and, by doing so, saved Rome. Despite few resouces and even less support from the German High Command, The 'Desert F o x ' , Erwin Rommel, cond ucted one of the most spectacular and successful campaigns in military history. In wars throughout the centuries, the fortunes of great armies have turned on surprise tactics and audacious maneuvers brilliantly conceiv ed b y un co n ventional officers. In this remarkable work, acclaimed historian Bevin Alexander examines some of the most astonishing campaigns and engagements of all time - providing a uniquely insightful look at the battlefield genius of Napole on, Sh er man , L aw rence of Arabia, Mac Arthur, and other military strategists who transformed rout into victory time and time again." Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

287 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..."
