FOR VALOUR: THE AIR VCs., Bowyer, Chaz.
21 Bowyer, Chaz. FOR VALOUR: THE AIR VCs.
London Grub Street 1992 0948817577 / 9780948817571 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine and front flap-fold.

THE IMPRESSIONIST AND THE CITY: PISSARRO'S SERIES PAINTINGS., Brettell, Richard R. and Pissarro, Joachim. Edited by Mary Anne Stevens.
22 Brettell, Richard R. and Pissarro, Joachim. Edited by Mary Anne Stevens. THE IMPRESSIONIST AND THE CITY: PISSARRO'S SERIES PAINTINGS.
Museum of Art, Dallas, 1993.
230 pp, 4to (11 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket and publisher's plain cardboard slipcase. ISBN 0300053509 Profusely illustrated with color reproductions. "In the final decade of his life Camille Pissarro abandoned his experimentation with Neo -Impressionist technique and developed new forms of pictorial expression that drew more on the Impressionism of his earlier career. During this period - from 1893 to 1903 - Pissarro, besides continuing to explore the landscape genre that had b e e n h is main subject-matter, also began to grapple with urban scenes, and his paintings of Paris, Rouen and the busy ports of Dieppe and Le Havre became an important component of his artistic output. At this time, Pissarro, like Monet, starte d to w or k o n canvas in series, often painting six or seven canvases simultaneously and discarding one temporarily when the light, the traffic, the weather or his mood altered. He started all of them at the scene, in the manner perfected by the I mpr ess ion is ts, and worked with extraordinary speed and deftness. By 1899, he was living part-time in Paris and, from his combined studio and living space, painted a series that included over forty views of the same motif. (The authors) beg in this bea utif ul book on Pissarro's cityscapes by setting the paintings in their broad art-historical context, tracing the tradition of the image of the city both within and prior to Impressionism and looking also at contemporary treatments of the urba n sce ne. (Th ey) e xamine the history of the representation of the city in the literature, poetry and philosophical writings of the nineteenth century and discuss Pissarro's knowledge of these alternative theories of the city. Using Piss arro 's ext ensive cor resp ondenc e from this period of his life, they describe the artist's attitudes towards his final works. The book also includes a catalogue of Pissarro's eleven urban series, each one introduced by an overview covering the histo ry of t he city scape pict ured an d the production, exhibition history, and early critical reception of the series. Full data of each painting follows." The catalogue of the 1993 exhibition. Slight waviness to fore-edge of text-block, min or rub bing on boards. Dust jacket has ver y minor edge wrinkling. Slipcase has slight browning at edges. Near Fine/Near Fine/Very Good+

23 Brockhouse, Robert. THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE: A CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS.
Toronto McArthur 2007 155278648X / 9781552786482 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Edward Burtynsky, photographer.
346 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour, b&w and sepiatone with photographs/reproductions. "It was one of those grand civic gestures so loved by the aristocracy of the Gilded Age: a gift to Toronto meant to call the world's attention to its blossoming as a great city. The giver was Cawthra Mulock, 'the boy millionaire', one of the wealthiest men in Canada. The gift was the Royal Alexandra, a magnificent new theatre built - with no regard to cost - to equal the most splendid houses of London, Paris and New York. It was to be the lodestar of North American theatres, attracting the finest performers and the very best in dramatic art to a city that still smarted under the nickname 'Hogtown'. If Cawthra Mulock had known what obstacles lay in the way, he might never have broken ground. He could not have foreseen the cut-throat rivals who would seek to bankrupt him; nor the two World Wars; nor the coming of the movies, radio and television; nor the Great Depression that would close every other theatre in the country. This book tells the story of a Canadian national landmark and beloved Toronto institution, and of the remarkable, dogged and devoted champions - from Mulock to Mirvish - who have kept it alive, thriving and triumphant over 100 years." Small crease at top edge of pages 193 to 204., light waviness to edges og text block, very light wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing, very soft wrinkle on rear panel.

The vast conflict, which involved almost all the European powers and their empires, is the subject of (this book). 29 Chapman, Eddie. Foreword by Frank Owen. THE REAL EDDIE CHAPMAN STORY.
London Tandem Mass Market Paperback Good
253 pp, 7 1/8" H. c1966. In 1940, safecracker Eddie Chapman offered his services to the German High Command as a spy. His first mission was to blow up the de Havilland works in Hatfield. "What is now revealed for the first time is that Chapman had immediately upon landing made contact with senior officials of the Air Ministry who listened with stunned silence to his story. Shortly after, a German reconnaissance plane which was allowed over to photograph the results of his mssion, reported that the buildings were in ruins and smoke was still rising. At Hatfield, the camouflage experts quietly congratulated themselves on having made it look as though an explosives expert had been at work! Chapman was working for his own country at the risk of his life. Soon after he was shipped back to Germany through Lisbon, where Hitler, grateful for the blow struck against England, awarded him the Iron Cross. For two years, Chapman, behaving like a hero of the Third Reich, spied on the Germans and constantly fed information back to British Intelligence, before being parachuted in for a second time to report on the range of the V-bombs. His true story makes incredible reading." Rear cover advertises the movie "Triple Cross", starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie Chapman and Yul Brynner as Colonel von Grunen. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Lady Carnarvon weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian stately homes." THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
36 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later."
