THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690., Ellis, Peter Berresford.
23 Ellis, Peter Berresford. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1976, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. "In the year 1690 Ireland was the pivot of the European crisis. Louis XIV had sent over the deposed king James II with French money, troops and generals in order to secure Irelan d and eventually England as allies. William III, together with other members of the League of Augsburg, sought to prevent a Jacobite restoration in England and the consequent domination of Europe by France. On 1 July 1690, the decisive da y o f t h e battle of the Boyne, the presence of troops from the continent on both sides of the river emphasized the international issues at stake. But the battle was fought for other reasons which are still remembered today. The Cromwellian la nd o wn er s a nd t h e English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster wanted to defend their property and power; the Old English Catholics and the native Irish fought to regain their confiscated lands and to drive out the alien English conquerors. H ow fa r, in fa ct, di d W il liam and James represent these respective interests and what happened after such bitter fighting? Peter Berresford Ellis describes the movements of both armies prior to the battle and the scene of the battlefield itsel f. Wi th his ch arac teri stic im partiality he assesses the personalities and strategy of the various leaders - the Earl of Tyrconnell, the young Duke of Berwick and Patrick Sarsfield on the Jacobite side and the old Duke of Shomberg, the Count of Solm s-B raun fels and Gusta vus H amil ton on the Williamite side. For it was the foresight, skills or mistakes of such men which were to determine the outcome of the battle. Vivid eye-witness accounts of soldiers captured in both camps add f eel ing t o th is st ory o f hat red, h ope an d cou rage which captured the imagination of the generations to come. But the author does not merely ascertain the military significance of William's victory. He outlines the consequences of Williamit e ru le for both Catho lics a nd Pro testant s alike , in b oth Ulster and the South, and in so doing destroys - in surprising ways - some of the myths surrounding the battle of the Boyne." Slight cigarette odor, very light browning to pages, lig ht br ownign to for e-edge of text block, small bu mp at bo ttom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wrinkling and edge browning, light rubbing, light to moderate browning on rear panel, slight delamination at top ed ge of rear pa nel. 24 Gallagher, Gary W., ed. (Brooks D. Simpson, John J. Hennessy, Gordon C. Rhea, Peter S. Carmichael, Robert K. Krick, Carol Reardon, Robert E.L. Krick, Gary W. Gallagher.) THE WILDERNESS CAMPAIGN. MILITARY CAMPAIGNS OF THE CIVIL WAR SERIES.
University of North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, 1997.
283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0807823341 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "In the spring of 1864, in the vast scrub forest that spread south from Virginia's Rapidan and Rappahannock Rivers, Ulysse s S. Grant and Robert E. Lee met in battle for the first time. The Wilderness campaign of May 5-6 initiated an epic confrontation between these two commanders - one that would finally end, eleven months later, with Lee's surrender at Appomat t o x . T he contributors to this volume bring modern scholarship and fresh insight to bear on the issues and leaders of the Wilderness campaign. Their essays explore the campaign's background, for example, by training an often-revisionist lens on e xp ec ta t io ns among civilians in the North and South, morale among officers and soldiers in both armies, and the strategic plans of Lee and Grant. Other essays assess the shaky performance of Union cavalry leaders Philip H. Sheridan and Jame s H arr iso n W il s on, the controversial actions of Confederate corp commanders Richard S. Ewell and A.P.Hill, and the often overlooked service of Lewis A. Grant and his Vermont Brigade. Finally, two of the most famous elements of the fighting i n th e Wi lder ness - th e 'L ee to the Rear' episode and James Longstreet's flank attack - are reconstructed in impressive detail." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some minor erinkling. Near Fine/Near Fine

27 Gough, Barry M., editor. THE JOURNAL OF ALEXANDER HENRY THE YOUNGER, 1799-1814. VOLUME II - THE SASKATCHEWAN AND COLUMBIA RIVERS.
Toronto The Champlain Society 1992 0969342519 / 9780969342519 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine
Volume II only. Pagination runs 329 - 781 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Orange/red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine, top edge gilt. No. 0531 of an edition of twelve hundred and fifty. "This second volume of the Journal of the North West Company fur trader Alexander Henry the Younger portrays Henry against the larger panorama of the North American fur trade. We find him in the first entry, that for 8 August 1808, taking his leave from the Pembina post in the Red River Valley. He is destined for the Saskatchewan country and a different departmental assignment from that he previously had. We trace his route upstream along the waterways of the Saskatchewan River system, and we follow him into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in what is now southwestern Alberta. In the course of these trading activities that cover the years 1808 through 1813, Henry meets the surveyor and discoverer David Thompson, and on occasion the latter features heavily in the narrative. During these years on the prairies and plains of western North America Henry writes extensive commentary on various native peoples. The last phase of the Journal, comprising the years 1813 and 1814, brings Henry into the watershed of the Columbia River and the Pacific Coast.. The Nor'Westers were in a very insecure position owing to the threat of United States naval intervention during the War of 1812 and to the rivalry of John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company. The tension of the narrative builds with these enlarge-ments to Henry's activities, and it ends in his accidental death." From the Editor's Note. Minor rub on fore-edge of text block otherwise clean and bright.

32 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.

34 Hind, Andrew and Da Silva, Maria. GHOST TOWNS OF MUSKOKA.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
271 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Explores the tragic history of a collection of communities from across Muskoka whose stars have long since faded. Today, these ghost towns are merely shadows - or spectres - of what they once were. Some have disappeared entirely, having been swallowed by regenerating forests, while others have been reduced to foundations, forlorn buildings, and silent ruins. A few support a handful of inhabitants, but even these towns are wrapped in a ghostly shroud. But this book isn't only about communities that have died. Rather it is about communities that lived, vibrantly at that, if only for a brief time. It's about the people whose dreams for a better life these villages represented, the people who lived, loved, laboured, and ultimately died in these small wilderness settlements. And it's about an era of history, those early heady days of Muskoka settlement when the forest were flooded with loggers and land-hungry settlers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.
