A HERITAGE OF LIGHT: LAMPS AND LIGHTING IN THE EARLY CANADIAN HOME., Russell, Loris S.
21 Russell, Loris S. A HERITAGE OF LIGHT: LAMPS AND LIGHTING IN THE EARLY CANADIAN HOME.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 802015301 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
344 pp, square (8 1/2" H x 8 1/2" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The nineteenth century opened in the flicker of tallow candles. It closed in the glare of Edison's electric lamp. Between those two events inventors and manufacturers developed a wonderful assortment of progressively more efficient lighting devices, burning a variety of fuels. Dr. Russell records with scientific attention to detail - backed up with more than 200 illustrations - how these lamps were made and used. His text is interspersed with accounts of his own experiments with the fuels and mechanisms of earlier generations. The discovery of kerosene is related in full, as is the invention of successively improved kerosene burners, lamps, and chimneys - a field up to now neglected by technological historians. Separate chapters deal with rushlights and candles; firelighting tools; pan lamps; and lamps fuelled with whale oil, lard, burning fluid, gas, and electricity. There is an extensive glossary." Interior - clean and tight, with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - moderate edge wear, corner crease at bottom of front cover, minor rubbing/scuffing, light toning to top and fore-edge of text block, spine flat and uncreased.

CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY., Strong, Roy.
23 Strong, Roy. CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY.
HarperCollins, London, 2005, first edition.
556 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0007160542 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "As a boy of sixteen, Roy Strong watched the grand procession carrying Queen Elizabeth II to her coronatio n. The spectacle was considered the greatest public event of the century. But now, several years later, many people have little notion of what a coronation is and are unaware of the rich resonances of the ritual, or its deep significance i n t e r m s of the committal of monarch to people. This book is the first of its kind - a comprehensive history to set each coronation into its political, social, religious and cultural context. The story is one of constant re-invention as the s er v ic e ha s ha d to respond to the changes in fortune of the monarchy and the country, everything from legitimising usurpers to reconciling a Catholic rite to the tenets of Protestantism. It had to be recreated from scratch after the restoratio n o f Cha rl es II in 1 660. By telling the story of each coronation in turn, Roy Strong recounts the history of British monarchy since the 10th century, and looks forward to the coronation of Prince Charles. The ceremony's musical history alone is on e of ex tra ord inar y r ichness - involving Henry Purcell, Handel, Edward Elgar and William Walton. The celebratory poetry, art and spectacular engravings published at coronations are all explored, as is the more recent role of photographe rs. Me ticul ousl y re sear ched, wit h rich visual material, including illuminated manuscripts, engravings, portraits, photographs and television stills, this will be the definitive book for many years to come." Very light wrinkling at top/botto m of spi ne, sm all a rea o f soi ling a t top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing and soiling, several very small tears - some with creases at top edge of rear panel - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very G ood-

370 pp, 381 pp, 396 pp, large 8vos (9 1/4" H) - 3 volume set. Volume 1 published 1968, volumes 2 & 3 1969. B&w photographs, maps. "General Andrew George Latta McNaughton, P.C., C.H., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., was a patriot who served his country diligently as scientist, inventor, soldier and stateman for more than half a century. His full-time military career began with his enlistment in the Canadian Field Artillery, where his skill and ingenuity as a gunner earned him, by the war's end, the rank of brigadier-general and command of the Canadian Corps Heavy Artillery. His interest in science resulted in the invention of the cathode ray direction finder - the direct forerunner of radar - in 1923. (Volume 2) describes McNaughton's career in the Second World War from his appointment as Inspector General of the troops mobilizing to form the 1st Canadian Division until the end of 1943, when he was removed from command of the First Canadian Army. McNaughton had antagonized (General Sir Alan) Brooke by his unceasing fight for Canadian autonomy. (Canadian Defence Minister) Ralston undermined his position by detaching a corps and sending it to Italy. With that policy established, McNaughton said, it would be better for Ralston to put someone in charge who believed in it; he himself did not. Nor could McNaughton have served under Montgomery after the latter, in highhanded fashion, had refused McNaughton access to his own troops in Sicily. (Volume 3) begins with McNaughton's return from the overseas command in 1944, (following his career as governor-general, Minister of Defence,) delegate to the United Nations and member of its Security Council and Atomic Energy Commission; he was president of the Canadian half of the Canadian-U.S. Joint Board of Defence; and he was chairman of the Canadian section of the International Joint Commission, a body established to deal with water problems between Canada and the United States." THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF., Weber, Nicholas Fox.
26 Weber, Nicholas Fox. THE ART OF BABAR: THE WORK OF JEAN AND LAURENT DE BRUNHOFF.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1989 0810918935 / 9780810918931 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Jean and Laurent de Brunhoff.
191 pp, 12" H. Bright red cloth with blindstamped Babar on front board, white lettering on spine, yellow endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w and colour reproductions. "Babar was created by the painter Jean de Brunhoff, who produced the first seven books of the series between 1931 and 1937, the year of his untimely death. In 1946 his artist son Laurent took up where Jean had left off. He wrote and illustrated his first Babar book when he was twenty-one and has now done thirty Babar books. In bringing Babar back, Laurent was holding on to an enchanted childhood as well as keeping alive the legacy of his beloved father. The elephant actually had been the invention of his mother, Cecile, who thought up the first adventure one evening as a bedtime story for Laurent and his younger brother, Mathieu. In 'The Art of Babar' (the author) has worked with Laurent de Brunhoff to recapture aspects of the artist's childhood in France and the values that he grew up with. He has a lot to say about how both he and his father used watercolor, and the author has explored this technical aspect of their art. The reader is presented with the development from rough sketches to final illustrations; much of this material has never before been reproduced." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence." BELOW THE BELT: NOVELTY, SUBTERFUGE AND SURPRISE IN NAVAL WARFARE., Winton, John.

Conway Maritime, London, 1981, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0851772366 B&w illustrations. "The 'dirty tricks' department is not a recent invention. Unconventional warfare was developed into an art by the Greeks, who employed fire-ships some seventee n centuries before their use against the Spanish Armada. The Romans shattered Cathaginian seapower with a simple invention and novel tactics, while the Byzantine navy's supremacy depended on the first secret weapon in history, Greek Fire. E v e n t h e use of poisonous gas was proposed as early as the Napoleonic Wars. (This) is the first book to bring together all the strands of this tradition, from primitive explosion-vessels to the human torpedoes of the Second World War. Every a ge h as pr od uc ed some scheme or device designed to upset the naval balance of power - and consequently dubbed 'unfair' by the opposition - but very few of these inventions are at all well known. However, such devices have had a dramatic effect on na val aff air s, and (this) is a fitting tribute to their influence."
