"In June 1940, the German war machine stood poised on the French coast looking towards England. Hermann Goring, flushed with the recent successes of his Luftwaffe, promised Hitler he would sweep the RAF fromthe sky, laying the Channel open for a German invasion. Yet that invasion never took place. Despite the bravery and professionalism of the Luftwaffe, a h a n d f u l of Allied pilots - known forever as 'The Few' - confronted and ultimately defeated the best Goring could throw against them. This is the story of those few months in 1940 when the future of the world hung in the balance. British, Am er ic an s, C an ad ians, Autralians, South Africans, Belgians, Poles, Germans, Italians - this special Fiftieth Anniversary edition tells the story of the men and women of all nationalities who fought in what, even before it had begun, had already be en nam ed 'Th e B att le of Britain'." DAY OF THE FLYING FOX: THE TRUE STORY OF WORLD WAR II PILOT CHARLEY FOX., Pitt, Steve.
22 Pitt, Steve. DAY OF THE FLYING FOX: THE TRUE STORY OF WORLD WAR II PILOT CHARLEY FOX.
Sandcastle / Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
140 pp, square soft cover (8" x 8"). ISBN 9781550028089 B&w photograph. Canadian Second World War Spitfire pilot Charley Fox, now in his late eighties, has had a thrilling life, especially on July 17, 1944, in France when he spotted a black staff car, the kind usually employed to drive high-ranking Nazi Germany dignitaries. Already noted for his skill in dive bombing and strafing the enemy, Fox went in to attack the automobile. As it turned out, the car very likely contained famed G e r m a n General Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and Charley is now considered by many to be the pilot who seriously wounded him. Rommel, who at the time was the Germans' key military commander in France orchestrating the Third Reich's resistance t o th e Al li e s' D-Day invasion, was never the same after that. (The author) focuses on this seminal event in Charley Fox's life and in the conduct of the war, but he also provides fascinating aspects of the period, including profiles of noted Can ad ian a ce Geo rg e 'Buzz' Beurling, famed legless British pilot Douglas Bader, and Great Escape architect Walter Floody, as well as sidebars about Hurricanes, Spitfires, Messerschmitts, Focke-Wulfs, early jets, V-1 rockets, and a whole lot more." I nter ior - clea n a nd tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - small minor corner crease on front cover, very minor rubbing. Very Good+

RAF FIGHTER SQUADRONS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Robinson, Anthony.
24 Robinson, Anthony. RAF FIGHTER SQUADRONS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
London Brockhampton Press 1999 1860199070 / 9781860199073 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
287 pp, 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Squadrons were the basic combat units in RAF Fighter Command; their combat effectiveness was a factor of crucial importance - transcending even the abilities of the brilliant individual pilots within the squadrons and the tactical and strategic skills of the senior commanders who deployed them. That the Battle of Britain was not won by courage alone emerges from the pages of this book, which examines the problems of tactics and leadership encountered by the RAF's fighter force when thrown into a battle for which it was less than adequately prepared. In an opening, wide-ranging chapter, the author considers the general course of the battle and the organization, tactics and equipment with which the RAF went to war. Thereafter he concen-trates on the operations and experiences of eight squadrons heavily engaged in the battle, describing and analysing the events, decisions and circumstances of the daily encounters with German intruders. Meticulously researched from official documents and by consultation with many of the survivors of 'the few', (this book) provides an illuminating new perspective on the greatest air battle of the Second World War." Tiny bump at top of spine.

MESSERSCHMITT Bf 110 ZERSTORER ACES OF WORLD WAR 2. OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 25., Weal, John.
33 Weal, John. MESSERSCHMITT Bf 110 ZERSTORER ACES OF WORLD WAR 2. OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES 25.
Oxford Osprey 1999 1855327538 / 9781855327535 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
104 pp, 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, colour plates. "Although the Messerschmitt's single-engined Bf 109 received most of the plaudits for achieving virtual air superiority over Europe in 1939-40, the exploits of the manufacturer's twin-engined Bf 110 Zerstorer in the first years of the war also make for impressive reading. Acting as the 'main spearhead' of the Luftwaffe, the Zerstorergeschwader committed to the invasion of Poland swiftly brushed aside the Polish Air Force in a matter of days. This success continued until the spring of 1940, when the first RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes were encountered in significant numbers following the launch of the Blitzkrieg in Western Europe. From that point on, Bf 110 crews had to fight for their lives. Only in the Balkans and far flung North Africa in 1941 did the Bf 110 enjoy an 'Indian summer' in the daylight fighter role. Despite its obsolescence, the aircraft continued to perform as a heavy fighter, particularly in 1943-44 as USAAF heavy bomber formations raided Germany on a daily basis. Featuring the exploits of Ju 88 and Me 410 pilots as well as Bf 110 crews, this volume is the first of its type to be devoted exclusively to Zerstorer day fighter aces, and spans the war years from Poland to the Defence of the Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - one tiny corne crease and one small soft crease on front cover.
