Hawk & Fisher: 213 pp, 1990 2nd printing, ISBN 0441584179 - "They're the battle-scarred crimebusters of a never-ending urban war - Hawk rules the streets by broadsword. Fisher cracks down on toughs with the deadly dagger that she wields with unflinching skill. Their merciless beat is the rough town misnamed Haven - a dark and murderous place overrun with spell-casters, demons, and thieves. Ready money will buy anything in their town. Anything except justice. That requires a magic touch. 2. Winner Takes All: 201 pp, 1991 1st printing, ISBN 0441142915 - Every city has its favorite blood sports. Some cities prefer the traditional cruelties of bearbaiting or cockfights, while others indulge their baser appetites with gladiators and arenas. The God Killers: 187 pp, 1991 1st printing, ISBN 044129460X - "On the Street of Gods, in the center of the city of Haven, the Beings of Power come and go. They are real and unreal, both and neither. Hawk and Fisher are on special assignment, on a street where none of the laws of nature apply - and very few of Haven's." 4. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55., Hibbert, Christopher.
23 Hibbert, Christopher. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55.
Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.

"Written with crisp authority, in a tense, documentary style (this book) presents an unforgettable picture of the battles, the ships, and the fighting men who se blood reddened the seven seas though more than four flaming years of the Great War....(It) ranges over all the world's oceans, from the ice-filled waters of the Arctic to the remote coaling stations of the southern seas. It tells of the m i g h t y l ine of battleships and cruisers whose collision at Jutland resulted in the war's vastest engagement. It describes the revolutionary entry of the dreaded submarine onto the naval scene with the exploits of Kapitanleutnant Otto Weddingen 's U -9 a ga i ns t a trio of British cruisers in the North Sea. And it supplies a possible solution to one of the great maritime mysteries of all time - the baffling disappearance at sea of the collier Cyclops." THE GREAT WAR AT SEA, 1914-1918., Hough, Richard.
25 Hough, Richard. THE GREAT WAR AT SEA, 1914-1918.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1983, first edition.
353 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0192158716 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author) describes the years leading up to 1914, the Kaiser's burning resentment of Britain's unchallenged supremacy at sea, and the headlong race to war, accelerated by the construction of the 'Dreadnought', the biggest, fastest, and most heavily gunned battleship in the world. During the course of the war there were shocks and disappointments for both sides. The Royal N a v y f o und itself dogged by a lack of secure bases, over-rigid battle orders, uncoordinated planning, and poor signalling. Operations, from the North Sea to the South Atlantic, were carried out against a background of feuds, scheming, and per so na li ty cl as hes at the Admiralty. Was there 'something wrong with our bloody ships', to echo David Beatty at Jutland? Could the appalling losses have been avoided during the Darndanelles campaign? Why were crucial signals received at the A dmi ral ty fil e d i nst ead of being acted upon? The Battle of Jutland was the greatest naval battle of the war, but also the greatest disappointment: who was really to blame for the inconclusive outcome? But despite the losses and the mistakes, the bril lia nce an d co urag e of many men shine through: the invaluable decoding work of 'Room 40'; the resilience of the commanders; the unfailing bravery and high morale of the men on the lower decks; and the excellent relations between the Brit ish and A meri can Nav ies t oward s the end of the war. It is Hough's contention that the Royal Navy not only beat the Kriegsmarine without resort to a bloody Trafalgar, but that its unrelenting pressure was the prime factor which led to the defea t on land of th e Ce ntra l Powe rs by the end of 1918. This account shows how that victory was achieved between 4 August 1914 and the abject surrender of the High Seas Fleet over four years later." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine, a few pages with tiny corner crea se, m inor br owning mark on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on rear hinge. Very Good/Very Good

THE GRAIL LEGEND., Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes.
30 Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes. THE GRAIL LEGEND.
Boston Sigo Press 1986 093843408X / 9780938434085 Second Edition Soft Cover Very Good
452 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The Holy Grail and its quest is a legend which has had a powerful impact on our civilization and culture. The Grail itself is an ancient Celtic symbol of plenty as well as a Christian symbol of redemption and eternal life, the chalice which caught the blood of the crucified Christ. The story of the Grail sheds profound light on man's search for the supreme value of life, for that which makes life most meaningful. Writing in a clear and readable style, two leading women of the Jungian school of psychology present this legend as a living myth that is meaningful to modern life. We encounter such universal figures as the Fool (the naive young Perceval), the Wise Old Man (the Hermit Gornemanz), the Virgin Maiden (Blancheflor), the Loathly Damsel, and such important themes as the Waste Land, the Trinity, and the vessel of the Grail. Weaving together narrative and interpretation, the authors show us how the legend reflects not only fundamental human problems but also the dramatic psychic events which form the background of our Christian culture." Interior - one tiny corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of text block, tiny dent at top of spine, very faint creases on spine, one tiny corner crease.
