21 Hughes, Monica. THE SEVEN MAGPIES.
Toronto HarperCollins 1996 0002245493 / 9780002245494 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
148 pp, 8 5/8" H. "Britain has just declared war on Germany and (Maureen's) father has been sent to the Front, where casualties are heavy. Her mother is trooping off eagerly - too eagerly, (she) thinks - to London 'to help with the war effort'. And Maureen is being shipped off to the stuffy-sounding Logan Academy for Young Ladies, a remote but supposedly safe boarding school in the Scottish Highlands. The girls at the school are just as Maureen expects: cold and cliquish, completely cowed by their cruel ringleader, Kathleen. But there's also something weird about these girls, something sinister. Why do they slip away in the middle of the night, one by one, to visit the woods surrounding the school? What's their secret society, called the Seven Magpies, all about - and why does it make them seem so nervous? It isn't until Maureen herself falls under the spell of a strange stone, a stone that compels her to leave it offerings of food, that she begins to understand what's making her schoolmates seem so strange. And then she discovers what the real danger is - - . A realistic yet magical story of what happens when a group of teenagers tampers with the ancient power of the Celts." Both book and dust jacket are clean and bright.

24 Jencks, Charles, essays by. (Robert Stern.) ROBERT AM STERN: SELECTED WORKS. ARCHITECTURAL MONOGRAPHS NO 17.
Academy Editions, (London, 1991).
144 pp, 4to (12" H), soft cover with self-flaps. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, drawings, plans, elevations. "Robert Stern's work as an architect is indivisible from his abiding concern with history and historical style. He regards Post-Modernism not as a random recycling of past styles, but as a necessary liberation from what he calls the 'perennial present' of the Modern Movement. In the four essays reproduced in this Monograph he urges contemporary architects to widen their vocabulary, to learn from the past in order to 'reunite current production with the traditions that a previous generation tried so hard to subvert'. The 33 projects featured here reveal the range of influences which have in formed Robert Stern's projects and buildings: from the Lutyens and Kahn inspired Lang and Westchester houses of the early 70s to later 'Shingle Style' solution such as the Lawson and Marblehead residences. Also featured are a number of larger scale buildings such as the Mexx International Headquarters in the Netherlands and the Disney Casting Center in Florida which have consolidated Stern's reputation over the last five years." Interior - small area of light soiling on half- title page, bottom of inside front hinge cracked. Exterior - light edge wear, rubbing to glossy covers - no color loss, spine flat and uncreased. VG-

The activities of these organizations also fostered the interests of people who became well known in London in their fields of study - Saunders, Dearness, Bowman, Woolverton and oth e rs .. .d et ai ls t he de ve lopment of the Entomological Society and its sections in London and provides intriguing accounts of the people who participated in them." "This volume, published to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ernest Shepard, offers the best and most characteristic of his whole range of work; it also provides a balanced appreciation of the man as artist and companion. Ernest H Shepard, 'Kipper' to his family and friends, is perhaps best known - and loved - for the children's illustrations he did for the work of A.A. Milne and for his incomparable drawings for Kenneth Grahame's 'The Wind in the Willows'. His output, however, was considerable and altogether he illustrated somewhere near to a hundred books. Over a period of fifty years he also had weekly drawings in Punch magazine and these too are represented here." London Academy Editions 1996 1854904531 / 9781854904539 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." "For the first time, the architectural history of the town of Lexington and its t wo nationally distinguished campuses has been appraised in a scholarly fashion. This Valley of Virginia community together with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles. In each, an essay on the history of the development of representative styles is followed by a photographic survey of the buildings." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978., Lyons, F.S.L.
36 Lyons, F.S.L. CULTURE AND ANARCHY IN IRELAND 1890-1939. THE FORD LECTURES DELIVERED IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD IN THE HILARY TERM OF 1978.
Oxford Oxford University Press 1979 0192224931 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "Irish history has traditionally been interpreted primarily in political terms as the struggle of an emerging nation to shake itself free of seven hundred years of English domination. The events of the last decade in Northern Ireland have led many people to realise that the reality is more complex, but this has left them if anything more confused than they were before. The purpose of this book is to trace concisely the outline of four conflicting cultures which co-exist in Ireland north and south. To bring their conflict to a focus they have been examined mainly within a narrow historical framework, the period 1890-1939 (defined by the two symbolic dates of the fall of Parnell and the death of Yeats), though there are some necessary excursions into a remoter past, especially in relation to Ireland. The underlying theme of the book is that no political solution has been or will be successful without a proper understanding of the intricacies of this interlocking pattern of cultures - Gaelic, English, Anglo-Irish, Ulster Protestant. The book is in essence an attempt to provide the historical basis for such an understanding." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, a previous owner's name in ink and faint erased pencil marks on free front endpaper, very light liquid stain in top margin of page 19, minor edge wear, small corner bump, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. 255 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "John Mannering's wife Lorna had painted what critics considered the picture of the Royal Academy year. Perhaps this was why she wanted her husband to give up his career as the Baron, cracks man and jewel thief and Robin Hood of the London underworld. Perhaps she thought it would be more suitable for him to open a very small, very select gallery....one like Quinn's, the West End antique and curio shop with the curious history, w h i c h j u st happened to be for sale. But when John Mannering went with money in his hand to buy, he ran into mystery and trouble. Soon New Scotland Yard was wondering if the Baron was up to his old tricks again...." Toronto Pagurian 1984 0889321302 / 9780889321304 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Frederick Arthur Verner.
192 pp, 10 7/8" H11 3/4" D. B&w and colour reproductions, b&w photographs. "Frederick Arthur Verner was one of the great artists of western North America in the nineteenth century. (He) was born in Halton County, Ontario, in 1836, (and) lived through the period when the Canadian West was being tamed and settled, the fur trade was coming to an end, and the Indians were submitting to the treaties. He had a glimpse of how it had been at an earlier period, and his paintings, most frequently of Indian and buffalo subjects, typically combine careful observation with an Arcadian vision of a lost era, and are among the most evocative works of Canadian nineteenth century art. (This) is the first major book to be published on Frederick Arthur Verner. (Joan Murray presents) a vivid and far more detailed account of his life than has ever been given before, and in surveying the whole range of his work as an artist, gives it a fresh and sensitive new interpretation." 40 Pimlott, John. B-29 SUPERFORTRESS.
Bison, London, 1988, reprint.
64 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0861241377 "The B-29 was a larger and more devastating weapon than even its predecessor and namesake, the B-17 Flying Fortress. Developed during World War II by Boeing, this American superbo mber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War, when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and ba c k t o d e v astate the Home Islands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the K or ea n W ar wi th g reat effect. The technical changes and use of this massive bomber is told brilliantly by John Pimlott of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Richly illustrated with color and monochrome photographs as well as color sidevi ews an d a f ull col or cut away drawn by Mike Badrocke, this book will be a valuable addition to the libary of aviation enthusiasts."
