23 Santink, Joy L. TIMOTHY EATON AND THE RISE OF HIS DEPARTMENT STORE.
Toronto University of Toronto 1990 0802027202 / 9780802027207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
319 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "In 1869, when Timothy Eaton opened his small dry goods store on Yonge Street in Toronto, the term 'department store' was unknown in North America and in Europe. By the 1890s the phrase had entered the language. In Canada, the biggest factor in that change was Eaton himself, an Irish immigrant with little formal education. Twenty years after it opened, his Toronto store was unquestionably the largest and most successful department store in Canada. (This is) a biography of Timothy Eaton which is at the same time a history of the first forty years of the Eaton store in Toronto and an account of the revolutionary changes in the way goods were sold during this period. There were enormous improvements in transportation, communication, and the mass production of goods. Urbanization grew at a tremendous rate; so did the population. This revolution imposed new demands on the retail industry, demands that many merchants at both the wholesale and retail levels chose to ignore. Timothy Eaton did not make that mistake. He used competitive and sometimes hostile markets as tools, rather than obstacles, in his search for sales." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine - minor elsewhere.

"Nobody, least of all the McCain brothers, imagined that the little frozen foods plant they opened in 1957 would, before the century was over, make Florenceville into the French fry capital of the world. Wallace and Harrison McCain worked hard and played hard and turned their family's name into the most famous Canadian brand in the world. Because they knew people were their most important asset, they hired and trained enthusiastic, independent thinkers to help them build McCain Foods into a global powerhouse in the frozen food industry. In doing so, they benefited not just themselves but thousands of employees all over the world as well as the millions of consumers who enjoy the convenience and nutritional benefits of McCain products. It's an amazing Canadian success story. How did they do it? That's what this book is about." 26 Wells, Jennifer. (Murray Pezim.) THE PEZ: THE MANIC LIFE OF THE ULTIMATE PROMOTER.
Toronto Macfarlane Walter & Ross 1991 092191220X / 9780921912200 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
277 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Murray Pezim has made some people phenomenally rich (himself included), and left others flat broke (himself included). Canada's most influential stock promoter, he stubbornly backed what turned out to be two of the biggest gold strikes in history - at Hemlo in northern Ontario and, more recently, at Eskay Creek in British Columbia. Pezim's controversial business practices and flair for publicity have made him a larger-than-life figure whose essence remains hidden behind his persona. 'The Pez' explores his roots: his Toronto childhood as the son of Romanian Jewish immigrants; his wartime experiences and real-estate deals in Jamaica; his apprenticeship on Bay Street in the 1950s and the fast-and-loose days of Earl Glick, Lou Chesler, and Viola MacMillan; his emergence as a major force in Vancouver in the 1960s; his alliances and battles with the likes of Peter Brown, Jimmy Pattison, and Ned Goodman; his failed marriages and inveterate womanizing; the legal troubles that plague him to this day." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small remainder ink dot on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light wrinkling at to/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small edge tear archivally taped.
